Windows 11 question

Had no issues with Win11 as far as gaming/app functionality (carried over from Win10) goes .... there is one thing, however. I've ALWAYS BLOCKED COOKIES. If a site asks, I say NO and don't usually have a problem. I don't want to be tracked!

One of the latest updates to Win11 (which accompanied my new laptop) was an aggravating piece of cr-app which won't allow a site to function correctly (open) until I click on the little red X'd out cookie emblem (now occupying the far-right end of my address box line) and UNBLOCK THE SITE! At the same time, it informs me of how many (unwanted) cookies are being blocked at that site.... why would I care?

We are offered the option "not to be tracked" (privacy) by virtue of the "internet options" menu in Windows then MicroSoft bows to all those, themselves included, that whine about not being able to invade that privacy and build in an app like that.

One uncharacteristically intelligent thing they did was make it so once the site is unblocked it stays unblocked.(y)...go figure.

Isn't that a browser thing though? I use Firefox with DuckDuckGo and a tonnage of blockers. I understand Microsoft is aggressively pushing Edge with 11 and not making it exactly straightforward to change. Although I have heard an update is coming that will simplify things

I used Firefox for years and it's good with Duck-duck-go, but Edge was always trying to worm in by means of popups etc. So, I deleted it (Edge). After that I had to choose which app I wanted to use to be able to open the various and a sundry downloads I'd do over the course of a normal day. I actually couldn't access these forums without the Edge browser installed and that really ticked me off. Edge is very proprietary, and for proprietary read "pushy" (by Microsoft's design) ie; use me or I'll make your computer time a pain.

I just gave up when I got a new laptop in December. It already had Win11 loaded (Win11 did not recognize the CPU in my 7-year-old ASUS ROG gaming laptop).

I mean you're correct.... that damned cookie thing is a browser (Edge) annoyance but if I don't use a browser, I'm stuck at home nights playing Solitaire. :ROFLMAO:

Edge is not "very proprietary", it's based on Chromium who is open source (so you have a Google Chrome render engine), compatible with Google Chrome modules, but with less tracking functions than Google Chrome (and that is the reason it is faster).

But think about that: developers develops their softs (and a website is a soft) for standard uses. So the best move, if you don't want to be tracked, is to use something like Brave (Chromium engine without tracking and with a native adblocker) and Duck Duck Go if you want. But the browsers aren't your ennemies, the big compagnies aren't your ennemies either.

Kiddo, my e-mail "in" box and spam is chocked so full of crap I can barely keep up. Where do you think these "big companies" get info on my supposed likes and dislikes?

Outside of all that "happy crap" my machine slows considerably due to it having to inventory all the cookies remaining on my computer when I shut down.

I've used Crap Cleaner for years and it's getting better as trackers get more tenacious plus blocking cookies via the "internet options" menu in Windows really helps the situation.

You'll probably say it takes a lot more work ("keystrokes") to get around the web without saved passwords and such..........but like they say, privacy ain't easy but it can be cheap if you don't let yourself become lazy.

I upgraded from Windows 10 too and all applications were still available and working perfectly. :)

My laptop recently presented me with the banner telling me that Windows11 is ready to be downloaded and installed. All the noise about the following issue aside, I'll ask a simple question: Using a local account on the computer now, if I go thru the offered upgrade path (not a clean install), will the installation just continue with my local account, or will it press me to use a Microsoft account?

To clarify the question: I don't need advice about HOW to get-around using a Microsoft account versus using one, I'm simply asking whether it will port my setup as-is or not. Those of you who used this upgrade route would likely remember.

I read your post with interest and would like to ask for a couple of clarifications.

1) Isn't that just an "association" setting to tell the OS which program* it should use when these operations are called for? That's pretty easy.
* The replacement browser, it seems to me. Or did I misunderstand?

2) I use Firefox and haven't had any problems accessing these forums. Did you mean to say that you used Firefox successfully to access these forums, but only if Edge was also installed?
On my OS, I have Edge installed, but I have all the features turned off / set to most restrictive possible, and I almost never use it.

I upgraded to Win 11 from Win 10 around 5 days ago. I have no idea why I didn't do it sooner. All my apps are intact and the OS is really nice to work with.

Elite Dangerous plays better than on Win 10 from what I can tell too. I just get a few more frames per second, not huge amounts but a few.

To: Estaban & Vernon...

I actually got tired of ads, popups of all sorts and being told the site I wished to go to or item I wanted to peruse "was not/could not be/probably wasn't" healthy to open.
This where I hadn't had any problems before. Only what seemed to be Microsoft's assessment/judgement of the site or item, not good...not nice, not in my mind.

It seemed to me that Windows/Microsoft was trying to be my momma......so I uninstalled Edge. Much less stress that way.

From that point on whenever I downloaded a tech manual, information sheet.... hell, even a short book/article edge wasn't there to open it (or offer unsolicited opinions). My bad...my glad. I usually used Firefox to open stuff after that. In the end a few extra keystrokes got me to where I wanted to go...no trouble. Oh, and though I couldn't get to the Elite forums by clicking on the launcher page I could/did reach them via search engine(s).

Win 11 seems faster and maybe more efficient but some of the apps they installed as part of an update like the "cookie patrol" sucks. Nothing would open unless I opened that little app and manually unblocked the cookies for the site I wanted to open. As I said in another post, once I unblock a site it stays that way unless/until I block it/them again....it works both ways MS.

This may sound like a lot of whining over what might be considered unimportant, but I spend a lot of time on my computer with work, play, listening to music and other things. I don't want the extra bull which, in the end, slows everything DOWN!

I gave up with my new laptop and started looking for (and finding) workarounds. It seems that all the crap MS loads into Windows (actually has "switched on") to obtain personal info also helps maintain a small semblance of privacy, I just need to dig it out and switch it off.(y)

Once again this is my rant (hope you enjoyed it):ROFLMAO:
