Witch Hunter?

Hmmh, an interesting idea. I suppose a career choice such as this - picking on The Law™ rather than easy targets - is a bit out of the ordinary, but not entirely unrealistic, if personal issues are involved (for those who actually consider their pilot a character of the game world, rather than just an immortal avatar of their own self).

For example, perhaps the pilot has had their parents killed by a particularly brutal bounty hunter, and/or grew up on a pirate outpost ... basically either starting out on the criminal side by virtue of their birth, or suffering from "police brutality" and the collateral damage of a heavy-handed approach at law enforcement. Such a character would surely grow to hate bounty hunters, even those who have high ideals of their own, and thus seek to dispense a bit of "personal justice" as a matter of vengeance.
I could see this make for an interesting backstory, especially due to the moral grey area involved. The killer could even be so deluded by their own actions that they are convinced they are doing "the right thing". Like a freedom fighter for the oppressed.

That being said, as for a name for this role ... I feel the most obvious and crystal-clear term would be Copkiller :)

Alternatively, Assassin - depending on whether you'd want to place the focus of the character on doing the kill or getting paid for it.

BOunty hunters are neither cops or the law :).

Strict bounty hunters would have a clean record, so pirate and/or assassin would be appropriate :p!

I think it's an acceptable analogy. I'm not entirely sure what the regulations say about bounty hunters in the Elite universe (the devs likely haven't written them yet, and they would probably differ between systems and empires anyways), but a professional pursuing such a career is, in effect, enforcing the law. Thus they can be categorized as belonging to "law enforcement". Not every bounty hunter may see themselves as such, of course.

As per Wiktionary, the term "cop" is supposedly derived from "copper", which in turn is derived from "one who cops". And "to cop" means "to capture". Bounty hunters catch criminals, so they "cop them", so they are "coppers". Hence I still believe that "cop-killer" is the best term for someone killing them, not in the least because unlike the other suggestions I've seen so far it should immediately make the other party understand what you mean when you say it.

Granted, with today's meaning of the term "cop" (limited to police officers) it's not exactly specific to bounty hunters, but it rolls easy off the tongue and has a certain ring to it. An alternative that includes the term "bounty hunter" is bound to get just too long and complicated.

In the end, all is subjective, of course. :)
