With all the doom and gloom about PowerPlay:

I just wanted to post that the powerplay update is how I heard about Elite, via some comments on Steam.

PowerPlay is the reason I bought E:D. So far from all reports im reading from actual testers, PowerPlay is shaping in to the exact reason I purchased the game and as such I can not wait til they clear out the bugs and release this live. For everyone who says "Well I won't be playing powerplay/factions, so it was wasted development resource/time".. well for every person that feels like that, I can attest that there are others who are solely/expressly looking forward to the powers alignment. In fact it's how I've gotten a fed of my buddies interested as well.

There's a few things to factor in here. For one, Frontier will look at the player stats first. Internet forums always focus towards the negative and can't be used as a gauge of overall reaction. Only the server statistics will do that to any degree of accuracy, number of players handing in vouchers, number of players voting, etc.. etc.. only if those stats say that nobody's playing, do then reactions on the forums inform as to possible reasons why.

For second, there's a fair number of players that have been in the game for over a year already. Some are still Ok with it, others aren't, as there's basically not much "additional game" after a year, sure a lot of balancing, and wings and bits here n there, but the basics of RES, CZ, Trading and NAV points are all well worn paths at this point. Only the non-powerplay amendments to 1.3 add content, whereas powerplay is very much an "alt-game" and as such is quite the letdown from what it looked like it may be, legacy expectations of the DDA and the kickstarter discussions and all, so a lot of the history may be coloring opinion, and powerplay may look a lot better to fresh eyes.

Plus, the base game's great with or without powerplay.

What's neat about PP is that you can completely ignore it if it doesn't fit with your playing style.

PP leaves me cold, and in beta I ignored it, instead I was busy enjoying all the other goodies in v1.3.

My thoughts exactly

At the moment in 1, 1.1 and 1.2 I have totally ignored exploration I have not tried to explore at all, mind you I have taken the money that comes my way,
.
Upto 1.2 I had no interest in pew pew in a RES - now I do it quite often
.
There are game play elements that you can or cant do its up to you and doesn't limit your game play in the slightest, PP seems that way to me. My PP choice was easy for me I was joining a faction that was in my area of operations - well based on Beta there isn't one, I'll probably wait for powerplay to come to me rather than seek it out

What it is, is pretty much there are a lot of people who had their own vision of Elite: Dangerous that isn't what it is becoming. One of the big arguments is that a lot of people (or a lot of people who are vocal on the forums) that play Elite are not people who have a lot of time to play the game (people with family, time consuming jobs, or other obligations) feel like there is content being added that, if they do not participate, will be missing out on game-breaking content or just content in general. There are a lot of good threads out there (which sadly suffer from people who reply just utterly complaining and whining and not adding constructive content to the discussion) that offer up solutions to the problems that the latter suggest.

The flipside to your comment though is that said people worrying about missing out on something, are in fact not really going to miss out on anything but a few gimmicky modules. So in that sense, it is just being blown out of proportion. People who feel that way however, can still play the game as they do now, and take part in community goals as normal. People are just massively overreacting because there are going to be things they now cant buy with their exploited fortunes. This is what i personally feel is the deep down reason for the negativity about powerplay. I can't wait to play it. However if i feel it is bad as some people say, i will be back here telling people and apologising for doubting it.

I just can't help thinking as seems to happen a lot with this game community, its a vocal few. And then when it goes live, a large majority of regular players will dive straight into it and life will go on. Then some minor patches to fix remaining bugs and on to the next update with some controversial change to something within PP at some point. Usual stuff. I don't see why people just don't play their own game and stop worrying about other peoples. I did that long ago and feel much better for it.

After all, haven't seen any threads yet about people not having a fair chance to be top 5% in any community goals? Oh, maybe because exploited millions makes that simple enough. Time gated modules doesn't however, so hence the teddy throwing threads. Some of those threads are now verging on insanity, people talking about subscriptions and xbox being free to play and all kinds of baseless theories about where the game is going.

Just because of some new modules. People need to get a grip.

Actually the best way for FD to make further financial success is to make completely unorganic further patches to cater all those kind of players who have not been affected by ED so far.
1.4 for hardcore MMO fans, 1.5 for mini-game lovers, 1.6 for tower defence lovers, 1.7 for fps lovers, etc.
Since they have a one-time entry fee, they can maximize their profit and don't have to care about the loyal layerbase as they have already paid while it looks like the whole world is crazy about ED.

The change is good, but there are a few threads with very good suggestions how FD could have made it better and not another mini CG grind fest.

I dont expect FD to just scrap and redo, but i hope they take some of the suggestions and make changes to PP in the future patches.

I'm happy with PP as an addition to the game. And I do love this game, I think it's amazing.

I'm just disappointed that they still haven't added solo gamer content / missions / life / personality / variety.

clearly it's not FD's priority, but I think it's the one thing very sorely missing from the game

mile wide, inch deep is becoming more & more apparent, monotonous gameplay.

clearly from the forums / twitter / facebook / reddit I'm very much not alone with this opinion.

I bet this update is the same as wings... Loads of moaning about what is expected and then a big improvement when it's introduced. The difference is that last time I took notice of the complaining and believed it. I even left the game alone for a few days when all the moaning about randomly exploding ships started. When I finally got round to playing it it was absolutely fine. On the bright side it gave me more time to spend on felling some trees in my garden.

Looking forward to the update here.

I'll admit that I'm not overly enthusiastic for Power Play, but I have only played a couple of hours of the beta (I@ve been far more interested in my own game) so I haven't really played enough of it to get a true representation as to what it's really like.

so i put 10 tonnes of liberal propaganda in my hold and deliver it somewhere in order to change the balance of power ever so slightly. that leaves me only 442t of cargo space to make a killing on those land enrichment systems. which i have just done. no grind and very few people working on my chosen systems. not really a big deal and will be nice to exist in a galaxy which is not homogenous and is influenced by power, politics, trade, combat, exploration and mining. and i would probably get to top bonuses whatever they might be. having good fun here and looking forward to seeing the effect of my 180 merits
