As has been discussed elsewhere, the killing of BGS has put a lot of players and squadrons in hiatus. Without narrative CGs and BGS, and with PP2.0 still a buggy mess, there seems to be little community effort in playing ED until the BGS is fixed. Currently there are issues on the tracker for:
I can understand that Fdev have their hands full with the buggy implementation of PP2.0 and they feel they need to fix those as priority, but I would suggest that the BGS underpins PP2.0 and is more crucial to the overall game. I'd go further and say that while a lot of people have returned to the game recently and are getting involved with PP2.0, the long standing squadrons who enjoy working the BGS are finding difficulty in staying connected to the game without BGS goals and gameplay to keep them focused.
This will surely be compounded when the Colonisation update is released. I can't see much point in settling a new system if factions cannot expand into it. It is entirely possible that the focus of Fdev is to look at BGS expansion and faction mechanics for the Colonisation update release. We'll get to test this in Beta and maybe they'll fix BGS for then but that may not be until February or longer. If this is the case, many long-time players may have to take a new year vacation from the game.
- No faction expansion, though retreats are still working, meaning an exodus of factions from systems.
- hidden PP factions in stronghold systems that cannot be dealt with via BGS and undermine player factions.
- commodity markets stuck on low supply during infinite expansion states meaning poor trade INF.
