WMR and Elite

I cant seem to get Elite to run in WMR, I had it running before the steam update.

I did have to reset my computer and reload all games including steam and now find that all has changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

For anyone wondering what WMR is.

I googled it for you.

Windows Mixed Reality.

I think Elite only technically supports Steam VR and occulus.

@ Viajero, did you even read the first line of my post in the VR forum.

I said that in error I posted in this one and thought that the VR one was better.

That is the one that you closed. Therefore I am unlikely to get any help.
Thank you

Scorpion, when it stopped working was it right after a Steam Update?? If so was it a Steam update or SteamVR or WMR for SteamVR? Do you run Elite through Steam or Standalone?

I've had to reinstall my machine a few times recently, but E: D has always been as easy as configuring WMR and then installing SteamVR followed by E: D. Last did this about a week ago.

I did have to restart after a couple of Steam updates last night, but other than that it seems ok.

What exactly is happening? Does WMR load ok? SteamVR?

I haven't used my VR for about 3 months but yesterday thought that I would try It.

I put Elite onto Steam, set up my VR as usual but now although Steam shows a RUN button it does not say play in VR.

When I run Elite I get a small notification window in the centre of the headset screen that says something about Elite, I can't remember exactly what it was but Elite will not start.

I then take off the headset and see it running on my main screen.

I will try a different usb port today to see if it might be that. I can get into the Cliff house so I know that VR works.

Edit:- It wont run in the other port and the message is (Elite Dangerous Next up)

Personally, I'd recommend to run E: D via the launcher and not from Steam. It's much better to control E: D via its own options rather than Steam (i.e. set E: D options to use HMD once it's loaded). The only Steam setting I use instead of E: D is for the supersampling (I have HMD and SS set to 1.0 in E: D, with 170% SS set in SteamVR).

My process for loading E: D is to start WMR (though that's normally loaded on boot), then SteamVR, then E: D via the launcher. E: D will automatically start WMR/SteamVR if required, but I find that when this happens SteamVR often takes the input away from E: D until I change focus again (even though I have SteamVR to not be always on top).

get rid of steam and play directly using the frontier launcher.
I have a lenovo WMR and have no problem at all.

I have done as you both say and all goes well untill I get to the screen with the mountains then I get no further.

@govny I have got the Lenovo WMR and had no problems before this, so you use yours without useing steam.

Yes in the graphic menu I can set it to VR low-med-high they in the past all work well.

I will have another go at it tomrrow.

Thank's for your help, I will report on my progress if any

Did you remember to install the windows mixed reality for steam?

I got into ED back in the beta, and I've not 'moved' my copy to steam, but I noticed that it still uses (or can use?) the SteamVR API.

I started with a Rift CV1, moved to a Dell Visor (resolution increase) and now have an Odyssey+, and it's always 'Just Worked(tm)' with each HDM.

bacon_avenger probably has your answer here; there were recent updates for both that app and Steam VR itself, and you need both installed and up to date for Elite to recognise the headset.

Do you have any other SteamVR games you could run, to make sure that the integration is working generally? Both The Lab and Google Earth VR are freebies that are well worth installing from Steam as tests.

Google Earth and The Lab work just using just the desktop shortcut, and I have made sure that all was up to date. I have also made sure in Elite graphics that it is set VR and removed the launcher from steam.

Elite still loads on my desktop but not in my headset, it stops at the screen with the lines at the bottom mountains in the middle and the sky at the top.

I have just about given up and will resign myself to pancake mode although I will miss it while in combat

If those work, then it's not SteamVR at fault, but something in Elite. The only thing I can think of is to force a reinstall or clear out the config files, sorry. At least everything to do with CMDR progress is stored on Frontier's servers, so if you do reinstall the game you won't lose progress.

Ian you say "force" a reinstall do you mean uninstall the game then reinstall from scratch

Sorry to ask so many questions but I am not very computer literate

This is probably too obvious,if so; apologies in advance. Have you tried turning on Steam VR prior launching Elite? You can click on Steam VR or Steam VR For Window Mixed Reality.

A while back, I had a similar problem (Lenovo Explorer WMR), and did the above. It seemed that the game had to 'remember' VR once prompted by Steam VR . That's not very techie, I know.
