"working on something secret for PC and Mac"

Kerrash said he has seen things from August reveal and he also said it will put worries about ED losing focus to the rest.

Take it as you will, lack of hype is totally understandable, but this gives me hope of expanding core gameplay in serious way.

Also reminder that they develop things in parallel. Expansions are being worked on and core game being worked on.

he also implied quite strongly that our minds would be blown by E3, they were but not in the way I had hoped ;)

I don't want to board the hype train, but all this waiting for news is damaging my health.

So putting aside that the boat may well be a dinghy :D, the newsletter says "The Elite: Dangerous team is bigger than ever, and the majority are working on something secret for PC and Mac." Surely you don't doubt the Word of the Braben?!

Difficult to doubt that there is a big team

Yes and an announcement in august does not mean that it will be playable immediately. An announcement in August may concern the end of the year if it is a significant development

That's so weird I was just daydreaming about how this could be accomplished the other day. We're talking intelligent life right? Like characters.

I was more thinking along the lines of No Mans Sky/Spore, at animal levels of intelligence. Weird creatures which, once planetary landings came in- could populate landscapes. If planetary landings are coming at some point and FD wants animals on planets, then there needs to be some way of introducing variety throughout the Galaxy, otherwise we'll all be killing the same looking dinosaur things over and over again.

If FD were serious about that though- then they'd need to be into heavy R&D now, because it's an extreme undertaking. It could fit the bill of 'something secret', and a small preview would be enough to get people excited by it.

BTW, for the record- I don't think this is actually the secret thing they're working on. It's still probably related to first iterations of landing on planets though. That, or Thargoids.

PS- procedural characters could be cool. Until then, I'd settle for more interesting NPC character responses, as described in this thread.

Will it be called No Man's Sky?

+1
Lol. Yeah, that would make sense xD
To be honest Sean Murray loved and always dreamed of Elite being like the game they developed - No Man´s Sky.
In my opinion they did an absolutely great job and with less than 10 people, starting with 4.
I bet they bugged out the game really well when it comes out. The 16th of December 2015 would be a nice release date.

The bad news are, Frontier has about 5-6 months left to keep the people or to come up with something mindblowing and I don´t mean CQB or dumb Call Of Duty gameplay in Elite.

All the best,
Robin

That's exactly what intrigues me. I don't know much about Kerrash's demeanour in terms of how critical or gushing he can be towards a product, but he's definitely sounding excited by what he's seen and can't tell us. ;)

I don't envy Kerrash...in this case not knowing is better than knowing and not be able to tell anyone! ;)

Just imagine how hard he and some of the devs have to bite down when reading some of the forum posts while knowing what's coming...

Also the risk of slipping up about something...

Like Kerrash seem to have done when yesterday saying that Tier 2 NPCs are coming...and then asking himself if he was allowed to say that. :p

They've implemented a functional spelling and grammar check for the in game text ;)

It should be a working economy, a functional split tiered mission system and npc wingmen. Whether that'll happen or not is another thing.

A murder was sentenced to death one Monday. The judge took pity on him, and said that he would be shot one day in the next week, but which day would be a secret. The prisoner skipped back to his cell with a huge grin on his face. The guard, puzzled, could not understand why he was so happy. So the prisoner told him:

I'm safe: you cannot shoot me any day and it be a secret. If you have not shot me by Saturday, then you cannot shoot me on Sunday, as it is the only day left in the week, and so would not be a secret. But if you have not shot me by Friday, then you cannot shoot me: since you cannot shoot me on Sunday, you would have to shoot me on Saturday. And since I know that, it would not be a secret. Of course, they cannot shoot me on Thursday, by extending the argument. Indeed, they cannot shoot me on any day, I am safe!

The guard, not the brightest of people, did not really get it. But for the next couple of days the prisoner kept up his high spirits.

Then on Thursday morning, they shot him. It was a secret after all.

I love that quote. :) But, from what was said in the newsletter, and this is a very subjective point of view, "secret" in this instance implies something we know nothing about. (Probably something we don't need, like PP. ;) ) :D

I disagree on the fact that secret has to imply something that isn't a planned feature from early in the development phase. Secret in the context of a business usually means something that's under some sort of NDA or isn't otherwise ready for publicity yet.

All it means is something they can't tell us about due to time or requests from higher up the chain of command. Could be anything.

My best guess would be news about the first paid expansion, whatever that might be, to coincide with the one year anniversary of the games rekease in December.

Secretly hoping for planetary landings or passengers/persistent NPCs though. :D

I really do hope that it is consolidation of the game foundations before adding more half-backed stuff to it.
Something in the line of better missions (like branching missions (escort, protect outpost, find pirate base,... )).
A bit more exploration content / mystery / investigation / salvage, based on the three clue rule / node design.

Also, better PP integration to the game base would not hurt.

Otherwise, the game will end up an unholly minigame patchwork mess. Once the game foundations are solid, add stuff like planetary landing,
multicrew ships and whatever cool things them come up with.
