Would people like to be able to choose a home station?

Yes please. But I'd kind of need more than one "home system" :)

I have my own personal "home system": Gandvik. It's a run-down system with sparse resources ... but where I ran to when they released the game into "Gamma" and I made it my home base for many weeks while I slowly worked my credit balance up running Palladium out of Ordvik Port to a nearby system.

Then there is the home system for my Player Group. This is where I come home to after weeks spent in deep space exploring.

More and more though I'm coming to associate Colonia as home, when I'm not out flying in the Formidine Rift.

How do you get that to happen? I went "home" yesterday and got the standard welcome enjoy your visit like they had never seen me before and I have not got all my ships there.

If you're allied to the controlling faction sometimes they say nicer things to you.

Actually on my "home base" i receive a "welcome back, Commander" message every single time i dock. It makes me feel it home. As you see what you ask is already implemented. :p

I am allied to empire - I think controlling faction may have changed as real life got in the way for nearly a year and I have only just come back

If you haven't been on for a while then it's likely your faction rep decayed down to friendly. Which, ironically, might make them less friendly towards you when greeting you.

EDDI allows you to set a home system. It doesn't do anything in-game, obviously, but does welcome you back when you return and can tell you how far away from home you are.

Yes, and pledge to minor faction.

It's a nice idea, though I think need to bear in mind it wouldn't be a small thing to do .. for eg. if your faction got into a civil war with a rival, logically ships from that faction would need to go hostile against you right? There is also, an experimental version of this in the game already mind, Powerplay.

I like the idea of a home station. I can imagine things like a monthly stamp payment, paid to support the station when in return you might get a few extra missions offered to you? It would also be nice if your home base showed when you get scanned though that might be better in a profile 'card' rather than on HUD (so HUD doesn't get cluttered). In other words, I think it would be for the best if nominating a home station made some kind of a difference. I have a home station too you see .. but it's location, is classified!

True maybe its time to look at PP again.

TBH, my wanderings in Elite are so varied and widespread that I have no use for a specific home base. The closest I've come to having a 'fixed abode' was 2 or 3 weeks when Empire rank grinding. When trading, I follow the profit, so a different set of systems every few days. When exploring, I'm in a system for anything from 1m to 1hr, depending on what's there. When mining, I will self-destruct in the first hour to put an end to the constant micro-managing ;-)

Unless there was some financial or other benefit to having a home system, it would only be my obsessive need to keep things tidy that might cause me to pick a single base of operations - but at the moment, everything I own is in my exploration Anaconda some 6000ly from the bubble.

However, I suppose I do consider LHS 3447 as my notional home as that's where I was 'born'.

As others have mentioned, I would rather the ability to name ships over the ability to pick a home base.

Pledge to faction + Set base/station as home + Buy an apartment (when space legs drops) = set.

GTA Online in spaaaaaace... would actually be pretty damn cool. More specifically I like how that game managed the player's personal property, and a lot of it would be directly applicable to elite. We could rent a slip and berth at our (home) starport of choice, get a nice apartment overlooking the docking bay, or maybe in one of those skyscrapers on the outside. A place to hang up our flight suit, frame our wings on the wall, and watch some wanted player get chased by the spacecops on the holo-telly. All before we head down to the seedy pub at the base of the comms tower to see who needs our laser-related services today.

Throwing this open for discussion before putting it to developers.

Would people like a "home station" facility?

Ages ago I decided to choose a sort of base/home station where I store most of my ships and return to regularly - where I know the stations and nearby stars and everything is familiar. If I have been out in the black I come back here before setting out trading etc. Now I may be away from this station for ages but when I come back I keep kind of expecting the flight control voice to say "welcome home commander" or "good to see you" instead of "welcome" and "enjoy your visit" type stuff.

Does anyone else do something similar - have a home base where they do most of their missions from and keep their ships?

I was wondering if the developers could add a "home station" choice to go with ranks etc - have it so people can choose a station to call home. Maybe make it so if someone has a certain reputation there, has at least one ship stored their, and has made a certain number of visits in a certain time they can opt to make it officially their home. Have it so only one station may be home and add some perks like being told welcome home/good to see you as fly in so you feel recognized.

Thought I would get peoples views - if people think it a good idea I will take it to the developers.

Yes I would love to be able to do so, officially.
With officially I mean that the game would recognize this and react accordingly.
I made a proposal about it:

Someone started a thread about home systems.
I said I did not have one, that my ship was my home.
But later I realized this was not entirely true.
I always return to Dvorsi as I keep all my ships there and I take the trouble to bring every ship I own to that system.
I also buy most of my modules there. It is a high tech system and divided between the stations in that system almost everything I need I can buy there.
It also happens to be a system in Empress Lavigny Duval's territory.
I have been in her employ for a long time, even before she became empress.
Even though I broke my ties with her for the time being I still consider her to be my Power and if PP gets an overhaul I will most likely pledge to her again.

So... I do have a home system then.
And I started thinking about what FD could do to make this more of a thing in the game.

My proposal:

Marking a system as home system.
---------------------------------
- Commanders can mark a system as a home system.
- Cmdrs can only mark a system as a home system when they are allied.
- You can only mark one at a time and only change home systems once per 3 months (just throwing it out there, could also be 6 months or 12).
- A system that is marked as a home system will always stay allied.
- A system that is marked home system will get a special marker in the star map.

Advantages:
------------
- You get discounts there. People know you. Like you. Treat you better.
- You get better missions, better rewards, because... people know you. Like you. Treat you better.
- Your fines are lower (perhaps?).
- If you are attacked in a homesystem the authorities will respond much quicker to help you out.
- Bounty pay outs are 15% higher.

Other stuff:
-----------
- When you commit crimes, you will lose your special status and you will have to work to get it back.

- Also commanders are greeted with lines to make you feel like you are returning to you home "Welcome home cmdr". "Long time no see", "Glad you are back" and stuff like that.

EDIT: I found my original proposal:

That sounds pretty much how I was thinking. It would be a cool thing for the developers to do.
