Horizons Would you like to build your own base in Elite Dangerous?

I own a ship, i dont need a base. What i would love though, is walking around in my ship, maybe with an option to personalize the interiors.
The possibility to hire storage space in stations to stow stolen cargo, ship modules and stuff would also be very nice.

Being able to start a colony far far out in space, find a spot 2000 LY and properly start your own "faction" could have it's potential.

As long as it was not done in lines of "every other indie like surivival game ever", looking at you rust, go away with your poorly build shacks
We can already start a player faction just look at mine or @Xender signature. See something similar ? We are a real faction we have a base in the system station we fight for influence we expand. We don't need bases but something like this http://i.imgur.com/B7zt1h8.png could be useful. It's Automated Mining Extractor something similar was in FFE so... :).

I know you can create your own clan with your friends and support/influence a minor faction to control in a system, and make it expand to further systems. This is excellent manipulation of the BGS. It can off course be build on further. But it doesn´t take away the fact that being able to build a base on a planet in your minor faction controlled system would enhance game play even further. Think about it. Your own build base in a crater in a system you have influenced a minor faction to conquer. You may see that minor faction land on your base and really feel like a mogul/warlord. Maybe even hire one of the landed ships as a wing man. I know crafting/synthesizing and loot will bring much needed content to the game. Along with modulating/modifying your own ship. Its certainly is exiting times coming in E.D :)

I have thought of a way this could be started!

It has to be automated to a degree and totally tied to the BGS though.

Here it goes:

When a minor faction gets enough influence, just like expanding into a new station, some area of a planet in the new expansion system will be designated by the BGS. This area will act like a persistent POI in a sense.

The BGS will place a transient base here, as part of a hidden mission with a non determined time limit, which will automatically expand or shrink in relation to the influence of the minor faction it is assigned to. Players will affect it's influence by either running missions for the faction in the faction's home station or the land bound base directly, or can go against it, or attack it directly. The attacks, for instancing reasons, should be handled by the automated defenses but while hard to kill outright, the strength of the automated defenses could be tied to the influence of the minor faction.

I'll try to expand on these ideas in time, now I'm out apparently or my wife will kill me :D

If you have played ARK you know what I mean.

You mean - hundreds of abandoned buildings everywhere? :)

Personally, I don't think building bases belongs in this game.
Having a kind of "home" inside a particular station or settlement - that IMO would be more appropriate...

I am not opposed to player-owned bases in a 'player housing' kind of concept like we see in other games - except it's often a waste of time and resources I've found, once the novelty wears off. So I think I'd rather see developer time devoted elsewhere for now. A simple hangar and quarters leased/bought on a chosen station or ground base would do me from a 'housing' perspective and would really only require a simple UI for that, for now. Once we have an FPS component to the game, 'player housing' (with things like decorations etc) might be more viable, but even then still of dubious value to the overall game in my opinion. And there remain the questions of how accessible or visible your base would be to other players, can it be attacked/destroyed while you're not in-game etc etc to be resolved.
.
The main concern I have though, if the game goes down the path of player ownership if any in-game assets such as bases (and by default, the surrounding territory), is the almost inevitable follow-on cry for guild-owned assets and territory (and the competition for those) - and I for one am not interested in seeing the game go down that path. There are other games for that fix. But that's a different proposition to simple player-owned bases........

I like your ideas but i think it wont happen "soon" (2020) :). Those AME's im talking about are something much smaller plus they are already in game so maybe in 2016 we will have a surprise.

Can't see player built bases ever being in open play, maybe in private group and solo, because not everyone would like people placing stuff around 'their' galaxy and some people will find a way to really mess it up for other people (and on the scale of building all over the galaxy, that would a mess to fix). Personally, I would love to build a base on a tiny moon I own :)

I think what I suggested in my Social Side of ED thread is more likely

At this point, I would much rather see life in the existing stations and ports with the ability to walk around and interact. How much more immersive would it be to land at a starport, go to the local pilot's bar and be approached by some seedy character who's looking for a pilot for a smuggling or assassination mission.

I remember talking about this in beta elite ED1 so I would love to have a station base outpost that players could dock in for the reason we could plant them out side the bubble and in to the unknown space so for me its something that would be a great big + to in-depth exploration and merry Christmas

As we have gotten Planetary Landings would you like to build your own base anywhere you want. This could be an excellent credit sink and also include crafting and loot. Some base modules you buy and some you craft. If you have played ARK you know what I mean. If I had a base somewhere in the Elite Dangerous universe I would use more time on it, and many others would to.

What do you think?

Great thing.

I hope I could build my own base sooner or later

So you mean a base could pop up in a poi based area on a planet based on a minor factions influence. And it would grow and shrink based on influence. Well, its not a bad idea. It could be a "boom" base. When a minor faction gets enough influence it will spawn a random base somewhere in the system which will serve as this factions "capital". If the faction looses influence it would shrink and be easy to "loot" or destroy. If the faction looses most of it influence the base vanishes and a new base pops up if another factions gain the most influence. Its a good idea, it would create some content. I think actually Frontier has mentioned that their in game engine will at some point be able to spawn new bases or maybe despawn bases based on the BGS. You will see bases be built and maybe be destroyed based on conflicts and world events. This has actually been discussed often. It takes a heck of a procedural engine to make this come true I think. But its the ultimate dream. A fully evolving galaxy able to spawn and despawn bases, outposts and starports based on the BGS.

LOL WHAT?!

Elite Dangerous is technically a MMO with the option of solo play. The day Frontier forgets that and caters the game to just solo play is the day I'll stop playing. Seriously what is the point of a frigging galaxy if it's just YOU and NPCs. Forget that....

You missed the point. I didn't say anything about it not being an mmo.

What I mean is it's not about being the hero that saves the universe, and for that reason owning a space station is not something that is achievable. I am not some corporate multi-billionaire - I'm just a lone pilot fighting to stay alive in a massive universe.

I think walking on ships and customizable interior should be enough for 2016/2017. Maybe a customizable cargo space when we can install objects related to crafting etc. Also storages on npc stations should be available.
Next big thing is netcode optimization. Maybe Peer To Peer for small player counts and client server for many players? :p
Then in late 2017/2018 true players bases.

Yes. That would be what this game needs to retain players.

Elite already is a heck of a PG engine. It's the netcode and the BGS that needs to be worked on in order to implement these. The mechanisms to actually create the bases automatically are already in the game hence the POI bases are possible. The mechanics to make them persistent should be a part of the BGS. The rest is the same as governing minor factions as it is now.

I didn't see it talked about very often tbh but if it is, it's because this is one of the most logical ways to implement such a mechanic into ED. In fact, I think it may be even closer than we hope if it's talked about as much as you say :D I'm excited :)
