Would You Pay to have a System You Could Name?

Some of you need to take an inward look at yourselves. This is a discussion forum, you are under no obligation to read or respond to threads, yet here you are bumping this one simply to complain about it. Newsflash, people can post any topic they want for discussion, and THE MODS decide what's appropriate, useful and worth keeping around. you on't even have to read the content, you can see the title!! And it's not like this was a deceptive title, you saw it, you clicked on it, just to pee and moan.

You know what's a lot more pointless than people posting these threads? People posting their disapporval of them, cos guess what, they ain't gonna stop. There are loads of entitled people out there with money, and they will want to buy their way to success. The purism around here has turned into knee jerking and witch hunting. Some of you were people saying this community isn;t toxic in another recent thread. I invite you (collectively) to re-read the responses in this thread and really consider if 'we' don't need an attitude adjustment.

/end rant

I would pay for full reskins and variations on existing ships, for one. Imagine a DBX with the same exact internal modules, except a different body and different hardpoint placement, JUST FOR VARIATION!!

a) they could just input a parameters query (e.g. find two planets colliding) and simple script will find such system if it does exist in ten minutes or so

It isn't necessarily so simple. Procedural generation describes rules - in the case of this game very complex rules - which govern the outputs that result from given inputs. Finding the inputs that would create the desired result is an entirely different proposition.

b) they could just make the damn system straight away without having to roll the dice gazillion of times

They could do that if they wanted, certainly.

Now put yourself in the shoes of a project manager on the game. Do you want to assign a programmer to write the query you proposed in a), or a designer to create the whole new system from b)? Do you want to assign QA to validate that the system found or created actually fits the parameters? And repeat the task for however many POIs they want?

You could do those things and make work for yourself and your team. Or you could give the exploration community a challenge with the promise of having their names immortalised on the POIs that are found. You do indeed engage with the community and you get the content for free. It's a win-win.

These missions are needed for some very vital engineer unlocks - I would gladly pass on them if I'd have a choice in that matter.

I'm glad I unlocked all the engineers some time ago, before Frontier introduced the requirement to take passenger missions to player-submitted POIs.

All of this is of course off topic for the discussion. Would I pay to name a system? Yes. And I did.

I do understand the argument that some names are immersion breaking. Indeed I do find some of the Kickstarter names a bit silly and I'm very glad that no one ever used the name I submitted as an example of an unreasonable name. It would, however, be arrogant and hypocritical of me to say that my name and my money are better than everyone else's so I either give up on the idea of ever naming another system or live and let live.

PLEASE STOP with the "Would you pay to win?" questions. The answer is no, no and no.

Naming a system gives you no advantage in the game, any more than naming your ship.

Consider the underlying cause of these threads. There is some frustration among the community about how long development is taking, and some about the direction it is taking. We all want different things to be given top priority but we all want what we want sooner rather than later.

Some of us have already paid, some of us are willing to pay more to get the thing done.

I would rather be rewarded for doing things in game that would qualify as a good reason to have a system named after me.. not because i paid a fiver. #TurningPlayersIntoPayers.

I paid to name a star in another game, so yeah, I'd be ok with it. As long as the names are vetted correctly. You can name a star in RL now, too. Although those are private lists and mean nothing in the scientific circles.

Off topic, but just so nobody gets the wrong idea, these 'name a star' schemes are out and out scams. Your name goes on a 'private list' that nobody will have the slightest reason to ever look at. Not just scientists, but nobody. The star isn't 'named' in any meaningful sense at all. You pay for a piece of paper containing no useful information beyond the fact that you are stupid enough to buy a worthless piece of paper.
