Wow and Wow again : DK2 and new ED patch and Oculus 1.3 : TIPS FOR SETUP

Not impressed, massive black smearing. No supersampling improvements (a huge step backwards), gamma needs addressing as the blacks aren't black and the smudgy appearance of the display spoils the immersion massively. I'd rather go back to lower SDK's and run it that way, huge disappointment.

I wouldn't call it a huge disappointment but, frankly, the 0.5 was also better for me, at least for some things. I could run DSR at 4K + in-game SS at 1.5 and it looked very good and ran smoothly, with no smearing at all. Now I run 1.5 SS and most options maxed, and have occasional hiccups. I disagree with the poster who said that you don't need SS. At 1.0 SS, there are lots of jaggies. On the positive side, I did notice that the image appears slightly sharper with 1.3 and the explosions more....explosy. No way I'm maxing gamma to get rid of smearing as it makes everything look very washed out. Guess I'll live with is until my CV1 arrives.

I'm on the latest whql's released today. It makes no difference at all.

And yes SS makes a HUGE difference on both dk2 and cv1, your theretically increasing the resolution to make everything sharper. I could see ships only a few pixels big in the distance, now I can't tell if it's a star or a ship.

Thanks mate, unfortunately I didn't back up the file from 0.8 Is it possible for someone to send me the file, or do I have to reinstall 0.8, backup and then go back to 1.3?

Cheers

CONFIRMED

DK2, Windows 10 and Oculus 1.3 runtime works perfectly fine for all those running dual boots. No differences and same amazing performance gains. Smearing is there though.

Did any of you guys have any issues with the DK2 sensor being reported as plugged into a USB2 port even though it is plugged into a USB 3 port ?

Ignore all of the hardware set up part of the 1.3 installation. Just skip it all and ignore the warnings.
I have my DK2 plugged into USB2 ports on a powered hub with no issues.
Check via the devices section of the Oculus Store App to see if your DK2 is recognised.

Yes but I just ignored it as it's plugged into a powered USB2 multi block which is then plugged into a USB3 port on my motherboard

I've had no problems with the tracking as the warning suggests may happen

My DK2 sensor is plugged into a $10 USB2.0 hub and it works fine (although the oculus setup complains about it)

Thanks for that.

I got a couple of those Oculus Prefered USB 3 cards as the onboard USB 3's were unsupported.
Even with the DK2 and Sensor in the new ports, Home was giving an error (but still worked) and said to update Fresco drivers..
Having updated the Fresco drivers both HMD and Sensor have the green light, no errors.. :)
The HMD reports as USB 3 and the Sensor as USB 2. I didnt know the HMD did USB 3?

EDIT : Added some tips for those struggling with Oculus 1.3 and DK2

Well the wait was worth it and well done to FDev for a great build for the VR community.

I have just downloaded, configured fired up and all the latest ED patches and the official 1.3 of Oculus and WOW !!!

On Windows 7, GTX980 and 5960k chip with 32GB RAM and ED surpasses 0.5 and 0.6 and then some more.

With my Modded DK2 with a screen filter to help remove the SDE

  • Graphics are smooth, super smooth even in SC and planets
  • Graphics / Text are MUCH clearer in 1.0 SS and 1.5 SS (slight improvement)
  • The view is clearer
  • I cannot see SDE unless I really look for it (the filter helps) How they did this, god knows. I really have to lean in on text to see the pixels. (again the screen filter helps)
  • THE BEST experience of ED to date.

And all this before my CV1 ships in a months time. In fact I am struggling to see how the CV1 could be much better, this is amazing. Again the DK2 screen filter may be working wonders here. But I am more than happy to wait for the CV1 as my DK2 and set up is the best I could have imagined.

A few points for those trying it out

  • Everything is now Native, so De-install the entire 0.5 0.6, 0.8 and SteamVR if you have them installed. You DO NOT need the clunky SteamVR any more. Reboot.
  • Upgrade to the latest NVidia or AMD graphics drivers. The Oculus set up requires this.
  • DK2, skip the CV1 hardware detections in the Oculus setup.
  • In the Oculus Application, go to settings and allow un authorised apps to run. You will see that DK2 is not supported on the Oculus store and you need to do this to allow ED to run.
  • For playing ED on DK2, ignore the Oculus Store other than the settings. (Mess with the store outside of ED).
  • The graphics windows options are only for the mirror 2D window, which has zero impact on performance, so set it how you like, but set it to at least 75hz by lowering the resolution.
  • In the Graphics options of ED, turn your Gamma and Brightness down to reduce smearing (Has been mentioned by others)
  • Sit back and enjoy the awesomeness of DK2 and ED.

It is amazing how these patches from FDEV and Oculus have brought up to date the DK2, it is as if they magically changed the screen in my HMD.

I am amazed by how smooth it is aswell, however I have some weird problem were all my keys work except the steering ones so I cant fly left or right when using the rift. As soon as I switch back to normal mode my flight controls work again.. bit miffed by it.

I only have 1 USB 3 port but its working fine so I don't think that USB 2 matters really.

Radeon R9 200

Works very well for me.

It's interesting to see asynchronous timewarp in action. Near a planetary base, I can still see a reduction in framerate *except* when turning/moving my head, which is perfectly smooth. This makes it far less tiring when the frame rate drops.

Also I note that the gamma seems to be much higher for the same setting with 1.3, so if you're getting excessive black smearing where you weren't before, turn the gamma down. Mine was at 50%, and I've turned it down to about 35% and the visual quality is excellent.

Overall, this latest patch + Oculus 1.3 is a big improvement.

Still no fix for IPD in the DK2 using runtime 1.3? My IPD is 68.5mm and now I can't play elite without going mad, getting eye strain and losing immersion thanks to everything being out of scale... Guess I'll have to wait for the CV1 maybe? I don't think I'll be getting one for a few months...

black smearing is a symptom of a refresh rate problem, check your video settings and troubleshoot it. Your setup is busted if you have smearing

how do guys know your frame rate inside the DK2? and does lowering the settings for the mirrored window improves performance?

Just getting around to this now.

4 Questions

- I should uninstall Steam VR? I assume that is from the Steam interface as I don't see it in my programs. Is there an advantage to uninstalling steamVR as I might need it for other things later?

- Should I uninstall all the Oculus software (Display Driver, Positional Tracker Driver and Oculus Runtime)?

- Is the latest one I need the one called "Oculus SDK for Windows 1.3.0" at this link https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/ ?

- I never installed any of the later SDK after I bought the DK2 so I think I was on 0.5. Do I need to do any kind of firmware update?

- Yes uninstall Steam VR, I had some issues getting the Oculus installer to recognize my DK2 while it was installed.
- If you uninstall the top one, it should automatically remove the other 2, if not the new installed will complain.
- No, that is the SDK, unless you are developing software you don't need it. Go here: https://www.oculus.com/en-us/setup/
- No, if there is a firmware update that is needed it will do it automatically after you install the software.

Note you can find all of this in the amazing sticky at the top of this sub forum.
