Wow.. Odyssey is amazing!!! ..... If you have a 1080ti.

On foot, environment mostly affects damage decals, which are only relevant in a firefight. Material quality affects most surfaces, but can be quite subtle.

The fire itself isn't a huge issue. If you don't power up the settlement and just force your way inside, frame rate is much higher, despite the fires.

You're absolutely right. The fire is fine.. must be the spinning alarm lights then? Maybe they're getting calculated anyway even though they are not seen. I can't identify anything else that's different once the power is back on.

Turned environment back to ultra, material can stay where it is. Lets see how this goes. Also i might be just imagining things, but if you're cpu bottlenecked like i am, even closing the launcher off might make a difference. Minimising it isnt enough.

I play on my gaming laptop with an RX 5500M and it runs just fine, not unplayable at all

I wish. On my macbook pro even with the both the gpu and cpu undervolted to not hit the limits my 5500m is woeful. Maybe because i only have 4 gigs of vram.. on the 1080ti everwhere there is odd content its a permanent 9-10 gigs used.

IDK, just my personal experience, my laptop works great, barely ever drop below 30-40fps, when im in space im usually well over 100 though

I'm not entirely sure what it is, but it does seem to be an issue with the lighting. Occulsion culling clearly isn't working either as just powering up the settlement will cut frame rate by about 40% even if one never leaves the generator room or hides behind a hill and looks in the direction of the settlement.

What CPU is in this system?

Allocated memory isn't the same as required memory, but it is true that EDO is much more VRAM hungry than Horizons.

Hello forums. Just had to post to let everyone know how shocked i am that odyssey can actually be good. Yes, really!!!!

Noticed a few weeks ago, since the 4090 launched, the price of used 1080ti's has come down to what my middle aged brain thinks is what you should be paying for a graphics card. Given that my monitors require dual link dvi, this happens to be the fastest card still offering dvi, and my local pawn shop had the strix version and offers a 24 month warranty. i decided to bite.

Im amazed at how good odyssey is if you meet the requirements. My 2600k @4.1, 1080ti, running 2560x1600 capped at 60 fps is doing a graceful dance between being cpu bottlenecked, gpu bottlenecked and 60fps during the tutorial mission. With all the settings set to full except for the draw distance + terrain sliders, aa, and particle fx. Playing the space game is next level thanks to the lighting.

Anyways:

  • The fps gameplay proper a year out from excitement is beyond pointless. Im looking forward to the space game improvements, exobiology, carriers. And the graphics.. my god the graphics.
  • I used to read posts from the most sane forum goers here suggesting they wouldn't go back to horizons. Looking at how it ran on my prior 1060, i was truly dismayed as how could anyone say that...
  • From having experienced both sides of the fence now, i can reasonably guess that the bulk of "mostly negative" came from godfather braben having claimed in public it ran on his 970. I know from my own machine that anything less than maybe a 2070???? won't cut it. You might think it does, but its not. That's the actual minimum system requirements. I imagine beginning of snow crash and dr kay.
  • Odd seems to love vram. In concourses it often uses 10gigs plus. I only get 40+ fps also, but its stable.
  • You'll want to override your StarInstanceCount to 500000+?
  • No form of resolution scaling produces civilized graphics (it also the only mode where the bad aa is acceptable).
  • As a general rule don't run high performance mode out of your nvidia driver. That causes crazy temps...

Well, that was a pleasant surprise. Quite excited to check out odd finally. If anything, please know that if people run odyssey on below spec machines, its beyond just a poor experience, its dysfunctional. They really should have upped the minimum requirements and apologised about the mess. ...Now that the rest of the game works, i dont even mind the missing objects in supercruise bug.. though it is a bug. Odd planet surfaces look amazing on ultra.... :p

72 is not middle aged.
Just sayin'.

Are mining stations okay? I i'll probably stick to just scavenging and delivery for the moment so...

CPU is an i5-2500k overclocked to 4.1ghz. Confirmed in rtss. Its not even an enthusiast motherboard, its my partners old system after my even older i7-920 system failed... lol. 16gb Memory is clocked at the basic 1333 even. I tried to increase the multiplier when i got the card but even 100mhz was not happy and stuck in a boot loop. I can't imagine its the cpu so the motherboard must not be capable enough for it. Its quite bad.. many of the fuses for the rear usb ports have blown, only has first generation usb3... but its hanging on :p

Point is i only need it to do 60fps, so it wasn't complete madness to get a 1080ti.

Yeah horizons at all full seemed to take 2.4gigs of memory tops. Very kind it was.

Its like a completely different game. And its amazing. Its almost annoying frontier didn't just say upfront that the minimum requirements are higher, sorry you won't be able play odd without an upgrade. This is magnificent. How is it a players fault if frontier just said nothing.. its rational to think that what you read is not a lie, so the expectation just remained, incorrectly, and people just concluded that frontier were incompetent.

The crazy thing is.. looking at gpu load while the game is running, apart from on settlements, it seems completely "normal". So the increases in gpu power and vram seem to make sense given the visual fidelity. It doesn't make you think that what you see should be more optimised... (apart from settlements in certain conditions where its obviously broken).

I guess they must have been genuinely trying for the whole first year to actually make the game do what marketing sold.

What they actually have is so good though... gah. Well least i made it how many years later.
