Wow, the scenarios and bgs updates look great.. i still don't like the FSS.

Just watched the second stream.. it was alot to take in, but ultimately adding another layer of depth to the bgs via the upgrades and scenario interactions is.. nothing short of amazing really. I have a feeling given its mostly combat based and knowing frontier, the rewards will be that far off what you can do elsewhere in the 'credits' sandbox pillar it will become invisible immediately.. but hey its nice.

Every time i see this FSS it disturbs me more and more. The upfront mechanic it provides does two things, and both of them almost make my skin crawl: 1) introduce a SRV wavescanner like mechanic to everything to do with discovery 2) removing the need, or giving a cheap shortcut to avoiding, flight. The fact that you have to go into this blue out of ship mode also feels wrong.. if it was somehow impossibly implemented via our hud radar it would make more sense.

I really really hope the old ways are going to work in addition to this mode.. especially for exploring.

ps. i heard in passing a suggestion that frontier made a forum post for exploration describing many types of explorers they considered while designing the new system? Does anyone have a link to that? If i had some basis why frontier threw my type of exploration under a bus id have a better time understanding it. There is only one, narrow demographic of explorers this new mode serves. If you happen to that one sometimes doing another even you're screwed.

Im sure ill say it again with proof, but to whatever bucket i fall into, the act of flying out there made exploration worth it. I don't want to play wavescanner in replacement, i don't care about time. Id rather fly there instead.

While the FSS view is better than the current ADS reveal all scan, I do feel that it will feel forced quite quickly.

I strongly favour the new honk also populating the maps and nav panel with unknown bodies and the partial positional information available in the FSS view (position and distance are known before a body scan).

None of the information shown in these diagrams is additional to what is available in the FSS view - it is just an overview perspective that allows you to see, at a glance, what you need to pan around a full 360 (and up and down) to see in the FSS view.

No body information is shown.
No orbital relationships are shown.
Just position and distance - things that the new honk reveals immediately - shown from an alternate vantage point.

Being unable to select a body by any means unless you FSS body scan means that the scan is a mandatory requirement in order to do anything else.

Oh, I also want to fly and FSS scan at the same time - restricting it to a camera view is also a poor decision.

I'm still unsure what the FSS is - despite hearing people constantly referring to it for a week now.

I get that it's new scanner-doodad but I have no idea what FSS stands for.

Fancy Space Scanner?
Flipping Special Scanner?
Free Snusnu Scanner?

The thing I dislike about the current system is that the ADS takes all the mystery out of exploration - i.e. it instantly tells you where EVERYTHING is i.e. there's no scope for mysterious bodies in weird orbits, so I like that the new system makes you look for things.

it would be good to be able to do the scanning thing while flying though, rather than having to come to a stop in SC.

It looks like the depth ED has is now becoming more accessible which is good.

Hmm. I don't think it's anything like the wave scanner and for me, it will give me reasons to fly to planets. I can see it increasing my flight time not diminishing it. But agree about the full screen mode though, I wish it was a large pop up hologram.

Everyones exploration is going to change to some degree, some more then others. That is unavoidable.

I disagree. I think very few people will be effected negatively. Most will adapt to the changes and carry on.

As stated, it's nothing like the wave scanner. And you can still fly there. Nobody is stopping you from doing that.

I was quite impressed that the FSS section was so fast I couldn't follow it (even OA in his recap slowed it down a lot). This means that it will be fast in use when you get used to it. Looking forward to seeing it in action, little point in worrying until then.

Agreed regarding the current ADS. I have never liked it.

Well, you never truely come to a stop in SC, but yes I agree it would be good to keep at you current rate of acceleration or deceleration while scanning.

That would be perfect. I remember making a forum account to just comment in that thread where they put the black circles in before other types of people shouted it away. I guess it is a strong positive that now that frontier have committed to doing blue, this is the closest chance to get black balls mode back in while other types of explorers are also taken care of. We need to speak up.

Right, and the fact that id be so sick of explorer wave scanning that i want to do it as fast as possible.. makes the entire new system about as meaningful as board hopping. Its admitting the whole idea is a dud even before its released... think about it.

I cant help seeing how its already known to be a pain if they're advertising you can just rush through it.

Last nights stream was interesting, I actually liked the quick view of the FSS and the fact we could see all manner of different things briefly in the system, including a grade5 (USS?) at one point. All of the different things we are seeing in these streams will link back to the new FSS.

It doesn't follow that just because it can be done quickly, it's a dud.

Why bother doing it at all if you're not going to enjoy the moment mouse / joystick input. Its a game, not an production factory or store checkout. That makes no sense. In a game we want to enjoy and want to be doing what we're doing.

.

I thought about it - I think you're wrong ;)

Main problem people have with the change is that it will slow them down, but if you can gitgud then that worry is largely negated.

Not sure how you can argue that the ADS change is bad because it makes things slower, then argue the new system is bad because it can be fast, but hey, whatever.

I've never argued this. Its not the time. I want to fly, i don't want to sit there and play wavescanner. Please don't think im a traveller, im one of *those people* who scans all the bodies in the system or leaves it alone. :)

I remember well there is also dss mapping, but my type of exploring would pretty much always lead me there, so the whole FSS ritual is something else.. for that type of exploration. Its a big shortcut my explorer bones likely would not do.

Right now exploration consists of pressing and holding a button for a few seconds and then lots of flying in a straight line (sightseeing aside!). Let's see if the new system makes it at least half-way interesting - the preview at least looks promising.

Just watched the livestream on youtube, And just as last week I can't realy find anything that I don't like.
It's not that I'm involved in every aspect of the bgs but the things that apply to my playestyle were very nice, like the uss and megaship scenarios.
The Combat Zones are getting a great improvement too imho.

When Fdev continues like this I'll have to take back most of what I said previously, something I don't mind doing btw.
I don't see them take out the repetitive gameplay from obtaining the Guardian items but so far Q4 is starting to look realy good.
