Write system names in galaxy map

How do you guys search for systems in the galaxy map? Do you type blind on the keyboard or do you remove the headset all the time?

I explored u can press the headset button to launch the dashboard and then click the desktop tab with the controllers and press the grip button. Now you can type you name and press enter.

Has someone a more elegant solution to this ? :)

I use the nose gap in the Rift to find the keyboard. Once in position I touch-type blind.

Huh? Headset button? Dashboard? Don't know what you mean but it sounds more cumbersome than just lifting the headset to look.

You're going to have to explain this one.

The button on the (Vive) headset opens the Steam VR menu, like pressing the power button on the controller.
A double click on the button turns on the camera allowing you to sort of see the room and where the keyboard is.

If you have a controller handy you can use that to click on the desktop button in the Steam VR menu, to see your desktop in VR, but I don't see how that can help you type in the gal map.
It does give you a way to "tab out" to the desktop without taking off the headset, but in the long run I think it's easier to take off the headset.

Personally, I have had to remove the Vive rubber nose guard because the wings on it were pushing against my glasses when I had the headset on. Leaving big greasy smudges on the bottom inside of both lenses. Without the nose guard I can look down my nose to see the keyboard.

My problem is I can't touch type, So I'll usually create a bunch of bookmarks ahead of time or I have to hunt and peck one key at a time looking down my nose.
I rarely type a name in the GalMap though, 99% of the time it's a CTRL-V

Ahh Vive, thanks that explains it. I only speak Rift :)

If I do trading I use http://etn.io/# on a second screen to look were to go next and what to take with me
while I lift my Vive to do that I also type the system name in the galaxy map.
Man are working on "V" an extra screen inside your cockpit to use (see) other programs, hope it comes also with
a keyboard.

Dree

Also backlit keyboard, looking through "the gap"

...but I also have another method. Brace yourself!
For CG's or exploration and such where I have potentially several/multiple destinations that I know ahead of time, I have a CSV file where I put the system and station names. Then, I have an autohotkey script attached to my HOTAS that allows me to essentially copy-and-paste the names in a sequential fashion as I progress. Overkill? Probably. But it works great if you're planning ahead!

In all honesty? I learned how to touch type long ago. Once your fingers find home row (most keyboards have bumps on the "F" and "J" keys) it's fairly trivial to simply type away.

You could use bookmarks, but that can be a problem if we have too many. Damnit Frontier, why don't we have bookmark folders?!? Rage QUIT!

Anyway, an option some people do is speak out the letters to Voice Attack. I don't have VA, so I have no idea how that goes.

It works on Rift now as well... if you've got touch controllers.

What I do though is I just lift my headset off, work out what a want to to using a text file. I copy the name of the system and paste it into the game using Voice Attack. It's not something I need to do much anymore now that we've got bookmarks

I sort of re-learned to touch type... I find the home keys with the bumps on (F and J) by feel and go from there. I'm not fast though, by any means!

Spelling out systems in VA would be really slow and one word commands such a "A" or "3" can confuse VA, causing things like a cough or other noise to be misheard. Multiple word commands are much more accurate.
Considering it's only $10 and HMD's have microphones can't see why you would not have VA, especially for ED. Talking to your spaceship, your ship talking to you, calling up maps and panels, requesting a song, it's a must have and a natural extension of the immersion. Not leaving out, useful in other games and apps, as well.

I mostly peek down the nose, it's only ever a few button presses and it's not like actually having to type. Bit of a needless hassle given the fact it has a forward facing camera.

Hoping for a setting to be added to the camera to remove the tron filter, then it'll be no problem just double tap the HMD button and look :)

Is the Vive camera capable of being a 'real' camera?

At the moment it just has the Tron filter, so you can open it, or have it open automatically when you near your chaperone - without crashing back to reality. By that I mean you can't see clearly through it back to real life. Also, no you PC doesn't recognize it as a separate camera.

You can open it in VR any time, but it looks like this:

Yes I know that look, what I thought you suggested it could be a real camera in witch you can see and read your keyboard.
My bad..

Ahh, k. No, what I said was "Hoping for a setting to be added to the camera to remove the tron filter, then it'll be no problem just double tap the HMD button and look"

Just want it :)
