X Rebirth VR edition

http://www.egosoft.com/games/x_rebirth_vr/info_en.php

this sounds like it has potential. I know nothing about it, does anyone here know anything?

specifically is it purely single player or can friends play together in the same instance.
(if so will there be non vr support for the game - possibly silly question for a game sold around VR!!!)

Strictly SP. Much smaller universe, but every backdrop is SuperSciFi-spectacular. Gameplay wise:

Negatives:
1) Worse flight model
2) Only one flyable ship
3) Virtually no gameplay with spacelegs
4) NPC models and such look pretty poor
5) No landable planets, small 'systems' with a static backdrop

Positives:
1) Build stations, build fleets and manage an entire space empire.
2) Fantastic details in the economy: drones load cargo ships, destroying a tradeship removes the cargo from the economy etc.
3) Great backdrops, huge sprawling stations. If you have VR, this would be insanely awesome.

Its very much different from ED. If you like the idea of having your ships mine for resources, bring that to stations, build basic building blocks from it, ship those modules to other stations, build modules and finally put loads of modules together to have your own self-contained fleet building empire: this is a great choice. Its got a pretty bad rep for two reasons:

1) Horrible launch. Really, NMS was smooth sailing compared to it. Core parts like AI and the economy were literally fully broken on launch, the main campaign crashed after the second missions etc.
2) Its not like the earlier X-games. Some changes are worse, some are better. Many did not like changes at all. :)

X Rebirth in VR? I remember what a HORRIBLE game that was when it came out. Absolute disgrace to X series, and all of the space genre. I've heard they've fixed some of the bugs and stuff, but that thing is flawed to it's core.
If you'd ask me - just pass it, and forget that it exists.

Its really a shame people are so... emotional about it. Its one of the best space games of the last ten years now. Its also weird, because anyone who likes the X-series should know all x-games sucked horribly on launch, and had tons of stuff fixed and added over the following years. Here's to hoping people 'unburdened by the past' can look at least at a computer game with an open mind. :p

Fortunately the reviews are already quite clear: https://www.gog.com/game/x_rebirth_home_of_light_complete_edition

Steam has very negative for the 'overall core game review', but 'very positive' for the latest DLC/version.

I'm afraid I won't have the bravery to go and play it again :D It left such a bad taste. Also, I just don't see how could've they fixed fundamentally lame game design with patches and DLC.

I only tinkered with it for a weekend around launch and like many, didn't get on with it. The early stages of the game were tremendously off-putting compared to previous entries and I didn't get very far. Heard in ensuing years much got added, if the VR support gets a thumbs up from the likes of us forum creatures -- will definitely have to check it out. Great seeing more space games add it and should be supporting that!

I'm guessing I'll have to buy it again if it's a separate VR edition? I haven't kept up.

Will I be able to use my Hotas this time, as for me that is really needed. It is using a new game engine using Vulkan so the visuals maybe a lot better.

I will see what the reviews are like first.

Thanks for the heads up OP! I am a fan of X series, although I did not play Rebirth a lot, as ED took over and I did not like the fact that you only have 1 ship, as opposed to the previous games in the series :)

I'll be following the news!

::EDIT::

Reading the announcement, this got me thinking:

Special universe and economy: While based on X Rebirth and Home of Light, the universe and economy of X Rebirth VR Edition are specially designed for a Virtual reality experience. This is also the reason why the games are not savegame compatible.

The in game economy is re-designed for VR experience? What does that mean? :D

I am one of the people that preordered X-Rebirth... It was pretty horrible and bug ridden at the start, there was many things broken and the devs went with a few ideas which didn't sit well with the community. It was visible that in the 7 years of its development there was a decision to port it to consoles, and then that decision was retracted, but the "casual" elements remained. Like the "follow the slipstream of other ship in superhighway". However around 6 months after release, with I think The Teladi Outpost DLC things got better. I didn't play it much, mostly due to other games and the whole internet discouraging it. I wasn't a die hard fan of the X-series though, so I wasn't that put off by it. One ship only is a bit limiting, however you can upgrade it. I myself didn't experience many problems with this game and heard that now it is quite good. I even bought the home of light dlc on sale lately.

The space legs gameplay was really atrocious at start. Tedious, annoying and with fugly NPCs, stations were the same layouts over and over and the inability to use menus to interact with station and being FORCED to walk and search for the appropriate NPCs (captains, merchants, engineers etc.) was annoying as hell. It was soon rectified by mods, and then by original game if I am not mistaken. I also am waiting for the VR edition, very much looking forward to see X:R from that perspective. It should be amazing with its busy trafic and fleshed out stations and locations, provided they get it right.

Regarding the use of HOTAS for pretty much any X-Series game, the mouse + keyboard was always the winner. There were problems supporting multiple controllers (like my ED setup consisting of HOTAS and driving wheel + pedals), but wider joystick support has rolled in quite fast after launch IF I am not mistaken (can't remember, really).

Shouldnt this be out soon?
It says at their homepage that VR edition is available at first half of 2017 and theres only 3 weeks left of the first half.
I bought Rebirth at the launch, and Steam says ive played this 4 hours. :D
Maybe ill get to play more when that VR edition arrives, really looking forward playing this in VR. :)
