X52 pro Clutch

I've ordered myself a X52 pro and currently looking in the forums for some example profiles while I wait for it to be delivered. I've seen several posts about disabling the "Clutch" button on the stick, but not explaining why.

1. What is the clutch button anyway.
2. Why disable it?

Thanks

In some games the clutch button works to trigger an alternate set of controls, or something along those lines.

Basically it would be useful in something like X-Plane for Microsoft Flight, to Elite it's just a dead button when in clutch mode.

Disable the clutch mode and Elite can use it as a regular button and you can assign it to whatever you like (Boost is a common option).

The clutch button is used to switch joystick control profiles in the saitek software by default. If you don't disable it, you can't map it to anything in Elite Dangerous.

I like to have the boost on that button myself. So the way to do this is to first disable that button in the windows joystick settings, after which it becomes a regular, bindable joystick button.

You can assign a button (the pinkie switch by default) to act as a clutch aka modifier - hold it down, and you can access a second function per button (think shift key on a keyboard)

Disabling clutch lets you use assign the clutch button to act as an actual button, ie assignable to an action itself.

The default controls in elite use the pinkie switch for "UI access"... So if you don't disable, that control won't work (unless you reassign it to another key)

Have fun with the 52pro, if you search the forums there's lots of helpful tips on getting the most out of it

Edit - double ninja'd. Gosh we're a helpful lot round here! :)

And dont use the driver software that comes in the box. Download that and the SMART profiler from the Saitek website.

Different things, the pinky switch is normally used as a "shift" button. The clutch enables control functions like mode switching or just displaying what button you're pressing on the MFD.

where's the clutch?

The thumb button on the throttle.

what button are we talking about?

where's the clutch?

Many thanks to all above for the help, and the super quick response - WOW!

I was just about to ask which was the clutch button, but reading above one post mentions it's the "pinkie" button on the joystick. I like the suggestion of using boost on the button though. I'll take a look around for any common profiles for elite.

Thanks again !

Thanks for that reminder, I never use the disc anyway :)

I have a Saitek keyboard so the software is already installed :)

Oh, the thumb button on the throttle (that the one with the letter "I" on it)... thanks, I'll take a look at that as well. can't wait for the Joystick to arrive.

Just got my X52 and was wondering about this also.. So how do i got about disabling this button as a clutch ?
Ive tried a few different things in the profile software, but im not getting any joy.

Thanks

Open your "Game controllers" window and select the joystick then properties.

On the MFD screen there is a option to disable the clutch mode.

OH MY GOD.... REALLY????

I thought my X52 was broken this entire time... are you f-ing kidding me????

Well, that makes me really happy then. I disable it in the Saitek settings I assume?

open x52 pro control panel, choose MFD tab , untick "Enable clutch mode" (bottom right of panel) , click apply, then in ED set the thumb button ("i" button) to boost :D

disabling clutch also allows me to use the mouse controls on the throttle. so I press and hold the mouse click button(below thumb , below mouse nipple) and using hat on joystick I can move my head in game:)

I can't disable the clutch button, has anyone else had this?

I checked and it was already unticked. I've ticked it and unticked it again for good measure :) What am i missing?

The thumb button on the throttle.

No. The clutch is the pinky trigger on the joystick.

Personally, I disabled mine entirely. Too easy to trigger when twisting for yaw.

Does anyone USE the clutch button for ED?

With so many new keybindings with Wings, I want to move more functionality to my X52 so I've re-enabled the clutch (to a different key) but when I try to bind stuff in the ED control settings, it treats 'clutched' button presses as the unclutched. e.g. want to use fire button clutches for chaff, but it overrights the primary fire mapping.

Do I have to map in the X52 profiler the clutched buttons to actual keyboard shortcuts instead?

Too much confusion in this thread...

The Clutch Button is the one on the Throttle (it has an 'i' on it), it is designed so that "Clutch button initiates ‘safe mode’ to allow on-the-fly profile selection, or to display button functionality without activating", I find that with it enabled in ED it causes issues with certain other buttons functioning correctly which is why I disable it, plus it can then be used the same as any other button.

The Pinky Shift is the button on the stick "Conveniently positioned metal pinkie switch provides shift functionality to double up on programmable commands", ie; change your target ahead button to become target next nav system or whatever else you care to set it to.

If you want to use the pinky shift successfully you need to be setting up a profile in the SST software and not trying to use it within the control bindings in ED as it is just seen as a standard button.
