the biggest problem with USB devices, usually, is insufficient power.
Motherboard manufacturers generally only put one, high power, USB port on the back plate. Some put more. You need to read your MB documentation to be sure.
I have always run PCiE USB cards with a power input directly from the power supply.
I also never plug more than 2 demanding devices into that card....just to be sure.
My x56 uses 2 of the 4 ports (the other 2 ports I do not use) on one of my USB 3 PCiE cards and I have never had a problem.
I know some people prefer the external USB Hubs (powered) but I have wall plug problems. Not enough sockets in the room. And I already have to many power strips.
