Xbox One version Controller set-up in PC version possible?

Does it get any easier using an xbox controller?
It's just a matter of what you are used to and muscle memory. Personally, I've played a lot more hours on xbox than on PC, so I know the Controller layout instinctively now, don't really need to think about it.

Practice makes perfect!

So for the PC, you can't bind anything to the XYAB buttons unless that's the only thing you want the button to do.
I'm using my xyab buttons for lateral thrusters and can switch to non combat modules by using a modifying button. Pretty sure you can bind a staggeringly number of commands to those buttons.

Thank you so much for posting the how-to, see you in space!!

This is a REALLY old thread, more than a year old actually. Since then, Frontier added an option in the controls menu called "Default Context". This mimics the exact controls that are used on the Xbox One version of Elite. At least it did for me when I moved from the Xb1 to PC. It helped with the transition.

Frontier should really rename it to "Xbox One Controls", or being that there is a PS4 version on the horizon, name it "Console Controls" or "Xbox/PS4 Controls" to help those folks that are transitioning from console to PC or just prefers a gamepad over a HOTAS.

I have an xbox controller to run only the SRV. I don`t have an Xbox, but I like controllers for racing games, beat `em ups, so I have this sat by just in case.

I must say the coding work on controllers is excellent. I have Trackir, Throttle quadrant, joystick and this Xbobx controller all combined and it all works. It even remembers everything if you tke the controllers out and forget to put them back.

There are games I`ve played that get completely screwed with a combination like this.

I have to stress that the overlay menu, (holding the button) can be switched off in the controls setup menu.. make sure its turned on.

Edit:

Damn, now i see its a necro.

I know this thread is old but I found it last night setting up my PC configuration for the first time (had been on Xbox before that). CMDR MrWhippy thank you so much for your persistence! Like a few others I had somehow missed the easy default config and was fighting to get it to work - when I saw your third post I cleared out everything, went back to default, and followed your instructions to the letter. It worked the 1st time. I switched to PC for VR so being able to use the exact same set up I've had on Xbox for 3 years has made a huge difference in getting back out into the black (since a new controller layout while blind would be difficult). Thanks to you and all other commanders who continue to help out on these forums. o7

I feel bad for all of those folks playing this on a console controller, I really do.

I feel bad for the mouse+keyboard people too.

I started on a mouse and keyboard. I added in a PS4 controller (I don't like the feel of the Xbox controller personally).

I went HOTAS and never looked back. It took a little getting use to, but didn't take long, and it just feels good.

I had a HOTAS but switched to an Xbox Controller after too many awkward questions going through security.

Hi there,

I just got the Xbox One version of Elite Dangerous, and I really love the way the controls are set up in the controller. Everything can be done easily without ever touching a keyboard.

My question is that is there a way to use the exact same controller setup on the PC version? If not, I really hope that it would be implemented as an option for the PC version as well, as it works so well.

Plug in, ensure its on default context and away you go. It's how I play.

Well don't feel too bad. I was on Xbox w/ Xbox controller for 3 years, then got a HOTAS for xbox for the last few months and agree it's a way more immersive and enjoyable way to go (except for head look, I preferred Xbox's way of doing that and was surprised how much looking around I did without thinking). So once I'm comfortable with the new set up to where it's second nature I'm sure I'll set up a HOTAS again. Can agree though, it's a significant change to fly by stick rather than by thumb.

You can't stack button bindings on the main buttons like the Xbox Version is designed. However, if you buy the XB1 Chatpad accessory and plug it onto your XB1 or Elite Controller, you will then have ALL the PC Keyboard bindings available to you, which is 10x better anyway! ;)

I use an XB1 Elite Controller with the Chatpad for playing ED on my PC in my home theater, and it rocks! The extra paddle controls on the underside of the Elite chassis also allows you to map throttle and fire group switching for the control with fingers you don't normally do anything with.

Allows you to keep your hands in a fixed position with both thumbs on the sticks at all times.

I actually stopped using my X52 after a few weeks with this setup. Its faster and more efficient in combat and obviously totally couch gaming compatible. ;)
