XBox vs. PS4 Controller for ED

The Xbox controllers are kind of frail.
I'm getting this feeling, both from this thread and Amazon reviews. My DS4 is rugged as can be. It's vibrated itself from table to floor (usually when I'm doing dishes during a long supercruise and am interdicted) multiple times and suffered not a crack.

Okay, well, I'll stick with it and see what I can do to make it work with games like Space Engineers. I'll also have to make myself an XBox to DS4 conversion chart so I know which buttons are which when a game thinks my DS4 is the XC.

ps - I also have a pair of PS3 controllers tucked away somewhere. Does Microsoft natively recognize these?

I've used ps3 controllers through USB cable... Can't remember if I had to use a program to get them working. Ps2 controller worked well with an adapter, sent from somewhere like Uzbekistan.

I will, however, entertain any feedback you might have of other controllers like the Steam controller or 3rd Party XBox controllers or even different software that lets DS4 mimic an XBox controller.
For space sims and racing games I still use my trusty - and ancient - Logitech Wingman Cordless Rumblepad:

Dual-analogue, d-pad, throttle slider, and 11 usable buttons (plus buttons for swapping left-stick & dpad, and en/disabling rumble).

If I was going to buy a new controller today, I'd pick up the Xbox Elite 2:

One more vote for XBox Elite Controller.
Have it since end of April and it is still as new (got the newish white version).
Using NiMH accus (Ikea's rebranded Eneloops, dirt cheap, terribly good) - about 2 pairs a week.

The underside pads means i can have everything on it - including lateral thrusters, binds for various speeds (+75%, +50%, 0, -100%), SCB+Chaff+HeatSink binds, orders for SLF
As another bonus, you can tone down the vibration instead of turning it off completly
And not at last, you can set sensitivity curves

I just feel like the xbox controllers are more comfortable in the hand, less strain on the wrists. And as someone said they are pretty much universally supported across PC titles, so seems like the standard at this point for PC gamepad.

There's a program called DS4 and it allows the PS4 control pad to be used in ED, just in case anybody wonders how to make it work.

I'm very tempted to try an Xbox controller now, simply because of wireless.
???

My DS4 is connected to my PC wirelessly

Not sure about the ps4 controller on pc.. but compared to the native ps4 vs Xbox controller I really miss mapping the touch screen corners to things. That touch screen was the dumbest idea ever.

Me - "How do you breath underwater?"
You - "I inhale and then exhale."

So while you kinda answered my question, you really didn't.
You can either buy the official PS4 USB wireless adaptor or try the bluetooth device in your laptop. For that you go to 'Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Devices and Printers', click on 'Add a device', press the 'share + PS4 button' on your gamepad. After this the gamepad will no longer work with your PS4 unless you pair it again. Not sure if the same problem exists with the official adaptor.
