Yesterday's SteamVR update seems to have fixed the last microjudders

Feb 3rd 2916's SteamVR update seems to have fixed the last microjudders

DISCLAIMER: I'm on an exploration trip, landing on planets 1200LY out and increasing, so I don't know if this has resolved any of the station issues.

There was an update to SteamVR yesterday that included a bunch of optimization fixes for the Rift. Everything seems to be working consistently even more smoothly.

Update is 1454542787.

I have a 780Ti. Couldn't use 0.5 direct mode due to the frame rate issues, but this update has openvr running smoothly for me. I'm on low settings, just textures and effects up to medium. I could use shadows in extended mode, but I have to have them off with this. No lag/tearing is better than shadows though.

Haven't tried an orbital station yet, but I've landed on a planetary station and drove the srv (lights off) around a bit. I get the occasional frame drop but otherwise smooth.

Upgrading from a 4770 to 6700k on the weekend. It'll be interesting to see if that helps with shadows etc.

For mods looking to merge, this probably belongs in this thread

I still run 0.5 to make ED work with my Rift. Is there an idiot-proof guide on how to make it work with SteamVR ('cause I'm not that smart) ? And, more importantly, is it better with SteamVR than with 0.5 ? I have a GTX 970 and it runs quite well in open space and around planets. Just have some stutter in Stations.

well, I've installed win10, latest nvidia drivers, runtime 0.8, steam, steamvr and steam version of elite and it just worked. Not sure if all of that is necessary, runs fine even if you launch elite outside of steam. As to what's better Im definitely for 0,5, steam version is noticeably slower, so you will have to use lower settings for the same performance. Only difference is mirror screen on main display, but unless you like to stream or record your experience it's useless anyway.

Not sure if the title can be edited, but "yesterday" is going to be confusing in a year.. we might want to start putting it in a date format to make these things a bit easier to find 2016Feb03 maybe?

Is there still this restriction of the rift only running with the refresh rate of the primary display? My PC is hooked up to a 1080p60 television so I can't run the 75Hz required for flawless VR...

i beleive the refresh bug is fixed!. i hope so as i am in the same boat, my monitor is a telly with limited res options

guys, so i have not played in VR since november and that was on 0.6 and win 7.

for my new win 10 machine, do i just install steam vr (already done) then isntall 0.8 and in the launch menu when i get the option select launch in VR?

(i am not interested in runtime switchers etc, i am just going to run in steamVR using 0.8)

thanks

There is no "launch in vr" option, just run as normal, then enable hmd through in-game graphics menu.

You'll need to complete setup routine for steamvr, which is not possible prior to 0.8 runtime installation. So order is vise-versa.

that is strange.... every time i launch ED from steam it gives me the option to launch in vr or launch on monitor. thanks for the info however....... want to go home now ;)

I thought you meant ED launch menu. Not sure if steam options really do anything, it works outside of steam just fine.

I can attest that the 60hz refresh issue is resolved - Main monitor here is a LG TV that had the issue before.

To get Elite going with Oculus SDK .8 or later going:
  • Windows 7 or 10, latest updates
  • Steam installed (does not need to be running) - Beta option must be set
  • SteamVr tool installed (does not need to be running) - Beta update option must be set
  • Oculus SDK 8.0 installed
  • Elite Dangerousn 64 bits installed

Start Elite Dangerous 64 bits via it's launcher (it does not care whether it is launched through steam or not)
If the first time, Elite option graphics -> select HDM in 3D

Enjoy.

Right rift installed on 0.8 and I got steam vr latest beta. Elite is perfectly playable..... Yay!. However I do not know if horizons in general does not run as well as bog standard ED 1.4 did or if steamvr simply does not run as well.

On high but shadows on medium the game runs a treat........ However on ultra but shadows on high I get slight stutter in the station. I did not get this running on the older oculus sdk.

Still as a baseline safety net this is fine. I do hope proper oculus support runs better as with a 20% higher RES as well as extra 18% s refresh rate over dk2 I fear for cv1 performance if we are banking on steamvr.

Finally after all of this time, we have the best Rift Support for Elite provided by Valve, thanks guys for providing better support than the makers of the actual device, nice work!

This thread gives me a lot of hope! How are you getting those versions? I seem to have a limited list in my SteamVR properties.

Interesting, I can't select this version either in my Beta Builds list.

I set mine to beta Update and checked the version once running, mine shows 145 462 5969, which assuming they make the builts consecutive should be more recent than 145 454 2787.

The currently loaded beta does not show on the list, so if you have the latest beta active, it will not show on the dropdown list.

As of the latest Steam VR Beta update (3rd Feb 2016), there is no longer an issue with setting the primary monitor to 60 Hz. I have also been running Runtime 0.5 because I wanted to keep the primary monitor at 60Hz, and run Rift at 75 Hz in extended mode. But this is no longer necessary.

The latest Steam VR Beta #1454542787 has solved the Compositor issue.

There is a way for you to check this. If you run standard Steam VR and Runtime 0.8, right click on the Oculus Rift icon in taskbar, choose Configuration Utility. And from there Tools > Advanced > Show performance HUD -> Select Performance HUD -> Render Timing, you'll now see the framerate in your Rift when you run 3D programs like Elite.

To get Elite to start in VR, I believe first you need to enable Steam VR. In Steam, go to Library > Tools > Right click Steam VR -> Install Game. Once that is done, from Steam you run Elite Dangerous. It will ask if you want to run in VR mode or not, I chose just normal Elite Dangerous/Horizons without the VR (but you may have to choose the VR for first run). In the game, go to Options > Graphics and choose Primary Display, set 3D to HMD (Speakers or headphones), Save. In your Rift, you should see the Performance HUD.

Stay on the Main Menu of Elite. On the Performance HUD, you'll see that the Framerates are oscillating up and down (because your monitor is at 60 and your Rift is at 75 Hz). You'll see a lot of Dropped Frames. If you force switch your primary monitor from 60 Hz to 75 Hz, you'll see the framerate stable at 75 Hz and Dropped Frames doesn't climb at all. But for many of us, we don't want to set the primary monitor at 75 Hz due to reasons. This is just for us to check and confirm that our framerates are suffering because of the primary monitor frequency.

So quit Elite, go back to Libary > Tools > Right click on Steam VR > Properties > BETAS > Select the beta you would like to opt into > choose beta - SteamVR Beta Update then click Close.

Now if you restart Elite Dangerous again from Steam, at the option to choose which to play (Elite Dangerous, Horizons, start Elite in VR Mode), just choose either of the first two. Once you're in the Main Menu of Elite, check the performance HUD again. You'll still see the framerate oscillating in the chart, but your vsync dropped frames are not climbing, and you should see a smooth game.

Now you're running Elite Dangerous at 75 Hz in your Rift, with the mirror at 60 Hz on the Desktop.

(you can turn off the Performance HUD now)

Just choose to launch on Monitor, then choose 3D: HMD from inside the game.

I have the same list as you. The latest version 1454542787 I could only get by choosing beta - SteamVR Beta Update. Maybe they will add this version to the list later.

It's interesting to hear that many find 787 smoother. I found the opposite on my 4790K 980ti system.

I have rolled back to 235 to get rid of the microstutters the later betas introduced.

I use the Ultra preset with SS1.5, but no AA, AO or bloom/blur. The later betas must impose just enough extra overhead to have a slight borderline impact on my performance at those settings.

I s'pose I will have to bite the bullet when my CV1 arrives tho.
