yet another Panther Clipper thread (including simple pictures)

We all know this iconic shape, the FFE's Panther Clipper:

And we also know Frontier's concept on a new Panther Clipper as interpreted by Zorgon Peterson:

As much as I like Zorgon Peterson's design, it however lacks the iconic shape of the original. Zorgon Peterson's design language also does not really fit for such a flying brick. The ZP's rounded wingy style rather fits for a Lion transporter or a Puma clipper.

Also, as taken from the picture below, it is far from beeing the original behemoth. It is even smaller than the Conda, and the Conda is far from being the largest ship:

Last weekend, I fooled around a bit by anticipating how a Faulcon DeLacy's, a Lakon's or a Core's approach on the Panther Clipper may look like and came to this (just basic shape, no ornaments and details yet):

Size is about 200x120x40m. It thus is smaller in any dimension than the Beluga Liner (209x132x45m) and thus should fit on large bays.

Concept-wise I think a flying brick as a work horse for carrying around stuff best fits to Lakon. Also Lakons desing language fits quite well. Swivelling engines are known (Keelback), as well as similar front facing engines (C-series). Also, Lakon did a quite good job in bringing old shapes into e:d (see ASPs).

However, in bringing old shapes into e:d, no one beats Faulcon DeLacy. Also a Sidewinder/Cobra/Python like cockpit and front seems to fit the overall shape.

I also like Core Dynamic's hunchback (Assault Ship, Drop Ship, Gun Ship) on the Panther.

Any thoughts?

"Faulcon" DeLacy,
"Faulcon" DeLacy, not Falcon.
I don't spot much difference, just cockpit shape?

"Faulcon": Thanks, changed it.

Yes, at the moment only different cockpits, front parts and spines. There would be differences in platings, engine and gear design. Such details may be applied when I decided on an overall shape.

I like your version very much. I think this is how the Panther Clipper should look.
It always looked like a flying fortress and it should stay that way.

If FDev adds the PC, then it should at a minimum:
  • be too big for large pads
  • need a different type of docking mechanic
  • have a transport shuttle on board
  • not be able to dogfight and have to rely on turreted weapons

I think one of the reasons FD have not released this ship is because its a box that fills the pad- its not a distinctive shape at all. Even T -10 Chonk and his T-9 Chonkettes have personality.
Apart from Cobra, Viper and maybe Anaconda it's pretty iconic of Elite franchise. Those engines are like curvaceous hips to me.

Perhaps. I also feel there is no point in adding the PC if it is going to be just another big ship.
