Just to clarify: do you mean take a long-range smuggling mission, follow the guy's wake that wants to talk to you, and do the other option?

No, I was talking about the new vague missions, where you get not initial details, but later some meeting information (system+time). The contact you meet there, gives you the target destination. It is not about changing a mission to a suggested alternative.
The missions I am referring to, usually require you to keep something safe.

I've been watching my fed rank over the last three days. I'm LCDR on my way to Post Commander. I'm seeing about 0.5% per mission, on average. I've gone up 12% in the last two days.

I currently have "less than 1%" for that rank, so your information here fits in with that. It's a shame the rank progress bar doesn't indicate to one decimal place (ie 0.1% to 0.9%)

I think it might also be worth noting how much the mission is paying and in the case of delivery mission if the faction you are delivery to is allied to one of the major factions.

I just did a delivery mission to take goods to from one Empire faction to another about 30 lys away which increase my percentage by 3 it was a medium reputation mission

I think distance within the system and value has a significant impact. I did a whole bunch of long distance communication missions. Going from Count to Earl I noticed the following:

Low payout stations <100Ls away never increased rep over 1%.
Stations 200,000+ Ls away had rep of 1-3%
Missions with rewards over 500,000cr had rep of 3-5%

I didn't take note of the delivery faction, but I assume crotalus has a point.

Just donated about 200 Missions (dont know the exactly amount)

trade rank: elite (if it does matter)

Rank before: 5% Post Commander
Mission Type: donate money, donate food

Rank after: 3% Post Captain
so 2 missions = 1%

I strongly remember that going from Post Captain to Rear Admiral cost me around 200 donation missions. So, around 2 donations per 1%.
 
Don't collect any info that might lead to people taking the path of least resistance. They might start directly nerfing rank xp if people gain it too fast.

Probably true, but I've progressed exactly 6% into Squire after completing about 40 Empire-tagged long-range missions netting me some ~50 million. Nerf this? Lol.
 
Earl: Donate/Donate Food (High) with about 10k credits each: 3 missions for 1% (did about 34 missions for 11%).

I assume the progress depends also on the mission payout/donation amount since there seem to be a lot of differences.

Long range aditi missions each worth just over 1 million credits. Smuggling got me a 1% increase. The transport missions are absolute garbage, though. I turned in four and it did not move it even a single point.
 
Dont even bother with freight specialist missions.
they basicaly send you on a trip to do 3 or 4 supply missions. takes forever.

I'm having success with long range courier missions. 2-6% each turn in based on the distance in SC you have to travel after you get there. no cargo required. Just went from Baron 12% to Baron 44% on one trip turning in 8 missions.

Sorry. That's from Fehu to the Bubble using an Asp. You'll still get some interdictions but not many. Just couldn't stack a ton of them due to the short duration.

The dollar amount is irrelevant, as is the quantity of goods given. It is strictly the type of charity mission that determines percentage gain (which gets smaller with each rank risen).

This has been illustrated in other "studies", and even FD acknowledges that there is a "point" scheme, which each mission type being assigned a certain value of points, and each rank requiring a increasing number of points.


Essentially in order, at the Post Commander Level:

Cash charity: roughly 0.4%
Goods Charity: 0.8%
Weapons charity: 1.9%


For "do something" missions, mining missions "pay" horribly, the number of missions required pales in comparison to a single charity mission, combat missions pay quite well, somewhere in the 2% region at Lt. Commander/Post Commander.

The bottom line is a progression from recruit would a very long grind, with a huge amount of repetition, so just get it over with with a few evenings of the login-logout mini-game, and then focus on the gameplay you want to do!

Faction: Empire

First the woolly data (I was keeping rough notes since a few days back) - Outsider rank, smuggling missions picked up 20% - 40% apparently (my notes show smuggle took me 28-48, then to 85) , then scored 1% for a courier, 12% donate, 1% courier. Promoted to Serf 29%, carried out a series of deliver data, etc for 1% a go, did some 'go kill this guy in system X' missions for 13-15% each, then courier and 'fetchx amount of goods' all for between 1 and 5% a time until promoted to Master 13%.

So Outsider ranked up pretty fast. Once getting to serf it slowed down noticeably....

Missions since then -
Charity +2%
Deliver clothing (canister plus arrow symbol) +1%
Deliver trade data + 1%
Deliver chips (no increase)
Obtain 18 non-lethal weapons + 10% (faction rep also improved by 1 point)
Donate 3250 Credits + 1%

.... currently sitting at Master, 28%, with rep of Neutral - 15%

The non lethal weapons run was dead easy and scored 10% in about 10 minutes, in contrast the #deliver these chips to x' mission involved flying to a station that was over 60,000 ls from the star and didn't even give me a single percentage increase...go figure.
