Guide / Tutorial Yokai's guide to rank progression (reputation) and working around the seeming bugs

The reputation system in this game is absolutely horrid. I understand the whole game is one big grind, but the added gate of doing a couple hundred if not more missions to be given the opportunity to then purchase their ship is ridiculous. It's frustrating to no end to have the money to purchase a ship, but unable to do so because I haven't done enough pointless missions. It seems like everyone is so positive on these forums, I haven't seen others complaining. Am I the only one that feels this way?

You're not alone.. All I want is the necessary rank to purchase the Courier and that's taking forever as there are hardly any missions around now.

Head to Tamar for Empire progression, Gould Port. It's relatively easy to rank up on BB missions, and even take some of the local BB cargo missions, they give you cash and are about 1-3 jumps for some cash AND reputation for you. I ranked up from Squire to Knight in about 2-3 in-game hours total just last week, sometimes just sitting in port at Tamar going through the donation missions every few minutes whilst watching TV, and sometimes getting a little more serious and jumping around making deliveries, which makes you money, increases local and Empire faction, AND makes your Trade rank go up, which will give you better paying missions anywhere in the game.

I have no problem that some ships require certain ranks, it adds another element to show your true colors, and gives you that extra pride when you meet other players, that you saw something through.

You're not the only one. The thing is, after people realize that after a month or two this game is nothing but a giant grind they stop posting to the forums.

All games are a grind these days some less some more.... just mix it up a bit or go hardcore grind like some players do to get the achievement. I personally hate grinding also so I'll rank up one then do something ells for a while like trading, B hunting or exploring & it's more fun with a group of friends.

Been there tried that. Still hardly anything available. Maybe at the rank level you have but as a Serf, I'm lucky to get anything. Even when I get Mission specific tasks on BB the percentage increase doesn't happen a lot so you basically complete missions without achieving anything and nothing to show for it.

IMHO, it's getting frustrating trying to rank up with the Empire and I must say that BB has gone down the tubes as far as missions are concerned. This applies to haulage as well.

Was there a more up to date guide for ranking up or is the general consensus to not to?
I've just spent 4 hours on doing missions to rank up and netted a glorious 3% to my next rank - Admittedly I'm at post commander - but with at least another rank to go and diminishing returns on the I have a feeling that it would be another couple years before I get access to the corvette.

I've written off the Imperial ships as unobtainable as I'm sure I'd die of old age first.

Getting the rank for a corvette or cutter now requires roughly 20000 data delivery missions, which is going to take 20000 missions / (20 missions/10 minutes) ~ 200 hours minimum. It's going to be more like 10000 hours for a normal superpower-aligned player (the equivalent of two years' fulltime work, or five years if you play a lot of Elite every night).

The only people doing that grind now are going to be paid for it.

Did they nerfed missions? I'm having trouble ranking up. Courier missions now gives like 0.5% increase in rank (I'm at Chief Petty officer). I can't sit hours at end to rank up (as most of us have other things to do). Did I miss anything?

...It gets worse.
Yes they did nerf "some" missions (mainly charity I believe), but essentially a mission will give a fixed amount of rep... let's say 50 rep, rank 0-1 would need like 1650 rep, and rank 11-12 would need about 17000 rep.

The best advice I can offer is to try and find systems away from the bubble aligned with the faction you want rank with, just to limit the locations with short distance missions.
Boom and outbreak (not with the faction hopefully but another present in the system) seem to increase the number of non-cargo delivery missions, outbreak might have some charity missions for a quick boost.

Get into the heartland of your faction, buy a big transporter and load with economy class seats. Take passengers from base system to planets in A, B and C systems (bulk only, those 14 tourist, 6 terrorist etc. missions). Fly to A, unload passengers heading there and take more to B, C and home base. Fly B, repeat, but only take passengers C and base. Then C and all those changed destination and then fly home base. Not a single jump longer than 20 ly.

Yesterday I noticed that I was offered a rank mission by multitude of factions. Wasn't in a ship that could have done it, so I kept running the passenger ring. Today, got into another ship and flew a pure courier mission for Imperial Navy. Made Master and immediately have next rank at 43%.

Turns out down near Exphiay there are 2 federal factions in 5 isolated systems. If you have horizons it's a fast place to rank up, I managed to get through post commander in about 2 days on delivery missions.

I thought I understood the reputation system more or less but recently I seem to have lost the plot.

I'm trying to increase my reputation with the Federation major faction (NB I'm not talking about ranking here - just reputation). It seems stuck on 75% and will increase a % or two but then drops back.

As an example, I complete a passenger delivery mission for a Federation-aligned minor faction from one federation system to another. My reputation for the minor faction increases but my overall reputation with the Federation shows a down-click (red arrow). The passenger isn't Wanted or anything.

So why is that? What am I missing?

Rep with superpower seems completely un-connected to rank gains. I gained rank of squire with missions, but Empire rep stayed in cordial. Then I went bounty hunting for Empire bounties and the rep shot through the roof (to friendly in one night, almost allied in next), but rank progression stopped to almost nothing.

So to me it seems one or another. Is there a way to get them both rise in sync?

Missions (for an aligned minor faction) raise major faction reputation as well as rank and minor faction reputation but major faction reputation decays back to 75% over time so you have to keep doing missions to maintain a high super power reputation. Having said that I'm not sure why you would worry about super power reputation, it seems to have little useful function now.

So Superpower reputation has no effect on minor faction reputation gains from missions? I was under the impression it boosted it.

is the starting post still relevant?
Cause if so it explains why my rank progress is slow.
So I really need to go rank up with several different federal alligned minor factions to get better rep and levels than just grinding 1 minor faction. Right?

I am so confused! @....@

Damm I'm lost, I used do play Empire long before Horizons came up, rank up to master and stop playing. Now I wanna try the Federation, ok following the same things before, go to the stations, get some missions that has the federation icon, do it again, again again, ok 100% blue arrow up, and no promote missions. What I miss? I have done missions for tons of systems, even another major power system as Hostile and no rank.... What i'm doing wrong now?

Basically keep doing missions until you see the Navy mission (its not called rank up any more just watch for Navy in the title). The REP over 100% is carried over into the next rank so don't worry about losing it.
