Guide / Tutorial Yokai's guide to rank progression (reputation) and working around the seeming bugs

Oh you poor people, being stuck at Friendly:eek:

I managed to completely alienate the Feds in my first week after launch (still not sure how) but that doesn't stop them offering me rank progression missions. I've worked my way up to Warrant Officer, all the while being attacked on sight by pretty much every Fed I meet. How does that fit in with the scheme of things? Funny, though, the stations themselves never fire on me: they just tell me I'm not welcome and then allow me to dock anyway, which I understand won't happen after 1.1

Haven't seen a green thing on my scanner since the Gamma:S

...other than in conflict zones, that is.

Ok, so I have an ALLIED rep with the Federation (major faction). However, for some reason in the status display, where I see my major and minor faction rep, EVERY MINOR FACTION ASSOCIATED WITH THE FEDERATION SHOWS "ALLIED." This happens even in systems 200LY away, where I've never been before. I found a workaround to find out my "REAL" rep with minor factions, but I wanted to post here and ask if this is normal or if it only happens in my game.

Concrete example: I spent much time doing missions for minor Federation factions around KOKOJINA system. The status screen shows me "ALLIED" with the minor group "JET FEDERAL LIMITED," which is a Federation associated minor faction. Everytime I successfully complete a mission for this minor faction, the "mission results page" shows a blue up arrow under this minor faction and the status of ALLIED next to it.

OK, fine. I want to become ALLIED with more Federation minor factions, so I travel to a different system.

Now, I go to a new system - PANOI. First of all, in the SYSTEM MAP page, where all the minor factions are listed - all the Federation minor factions have an "ALLIED" label next too them, even though I've never done any missions for them. This ALLIED status with them is also shown on the status display window (where you can see FEDERATION/EMPIRE/ALLIANCE and local factions rep). OK, fine, sounds great, right? But then, when I complete missions for a local minor federal faction in PANOI (in this case "PANOI HOLDINGS"), I see the mission results page, it has a blue arrow, but says "NEUTRAL" and not ALLIED. It makes sense, because it's the first time I worked for PANOI HOLDINGS. Back to the main status page (and system map) - no neutral, it still shows ALLIED under PANOI HOLDINGS. I've been doing more missions for this faction - now the mission results page shows "FRIENDLY" next to the blue up arrow. Great, there's progress there, but why is my system map and main status page reps bugged and still show ALLIED with ANY federal minor faction???

If Yokai or anyone else can tell me what's going on it'll be great. Thanks folks!!! Stay frosty, and always - CHECK SIX!

It's not a bug - there are really three reputation scores at play here.

1. You have the reputation to the individual minor faction (what I am terming 'base rep')
2. You have the reputation to the major faction associated with the minor faction
3. You have an effective reputation to the minor faction, effective rep = base rep + major faction rep.

Most places ingame go off of effective reputation, and that's what you see on the map and on the right console. Base rep is what you see after a mission.

I'm now certain that this is additive; I've gotten some where my major rep was right on a boundary and I could cause minor factions to jump up and down (Allied with Empire, but Friendly with minor faction, for example, after taking and discarding a mission).

I'm currently trying to see if there's anything special about capping both base and major faction rep. I'm already at rep cap for the Empire (still only a Lord though...)

Interesting. That (and other) stories lead me to believe progression isn't a simple matter of reputation. That meshes with my experience, too, as I'm at reputation cap and haven't seen a progression mission in days.

Thanks for the info Yokai. I do have a question. After completing mission for the Aulin silver united company it shows I'm friendly with them but in the system tab it still says I'm neutral with them. Am I missing something or am I bugged?

Oh and the feds are now unfriendly towards me even though I do a lot of missions for them. They scanned me with illigal cargo and I'm wondering what I need to do to get is to atleast neutral again.

Don't get scanned. Also, find a federation-bound minor faction and grind rep with them. repeat until neutral/friendly.

Read the post immediately above yours.

Your base reputation is Friendly.
Your major faction reputation is Unfriendly.
Your effective reputation is Neutral.

That is not uncommon when you have negative reputation with the major faction.

Had a strange one last night - Federation ranking.
Went through Chief Petty office to Warrant officer then Ensign.
Did a cargo run and checked again and found I'd dropped back to Warrant officer - was a bit miffed, thought bug and carried on with trading. Then randomly checked and found myself back at ensign without doing any further progression missions.

definitely a bug. temporary but still.

yeah, thought that, no biggie - just carried on. Have as I recall 4 rank progression missions pop up, all go kill general xvy in system abc. Now one thing I learnt was only take one at a time - if you take all of them and get killed then on reset the transactions show red - I'm guessing that means you messed up and no reward even if you complete them now. I just discard these as I'm assuming my rep has already taken a hit.

Been at Lieutenant now since - no missions have appeared however the trade profit around my route is just too strong to want to wander too far away to look for those +1% rep gains.

Thanks to this guide I've made it to Baron, but I've gotten stuck on Warrant Officer (or whatever the one immediately before Ensign is). My major Federal rank has just stopped going up. I can't seem to coax a blue up arrow out of it no matter how many federation minor faction missions I run and no matter where I run them (I've covered at least 80 Ly). I still get blue up arrows for the minor federal factions, but no blue up arrows for my major Federal rank (and this is definitely not a result of getting a down red arrow on a federal faction as well for these missions, as I've done missions which improve my ranking with two federal factions, killed elite Anacondas where the down faction is independent and the up faction is federal)...

I had no equivalent problem with Imperial rankings. I could always get that blue up arrow going via missions, though I did have 2 or 3 times where I accidentally down arrowed it doing assassination missions in and around Achenar.

I've even traded goods and sold exploration data in federal controlled stations for no result. My Reputation with Feds and Empire major factions are both allied, and have been since rank 5 on each side. Any suggestions?

You've hit the reputation cap with the feds. I have the same with the Empire. It never goes up again unless you first do something to lose some rep.

Contrary to the guide, I don't think reputation is the main trigger for rank progression (there are people Unfriendly to the major faction that manage to advance at a decent clip while they try to repair their rep). I think it't just number of missions you run, regardless of your rep, that causes rank progression. I capped my Empire reputation when I was still a Knight, now I'm a Viscount. Just keep doing missions. I think I did 40-60 missions between Baron and Viscount.

Thanks. You've at least given me hope that I'm not wasting my time :)

I followed the guidelines in this thread and I'm now Post Commander in the federation.
I should point out that while I was doing it I've remained completely neutral with both the alliance and the empire, never doing a single mission for them or their factions and everytime I completed a federation mission I was awarded with an upward blue arrow.
I'm still only friendly at the moment with the federation however and allied with a handful of minor federation factions.
I also never did anything "bad" (slave trading/illegal missions/accidently firing on someone), though I did liberate a couple slaves on more than one occasion.

Some advance notice of small updates I might be doing in the next few days:

* I'm getting reports that after 1.1, the "halo effect" of the major faction reputation causing minor factions to appear as allied or friendly in the STATUS tab even though mission turn-ins showed your -real- reputation with that minor faction (which was different than the STATUS tab showed) might have been fixed (or broken, lol) in 1.1. I need to do my own testing for a bit.

* I plan to review some of the recent feedback on this guide and possibly do some additions and corrections to the OP guide.

Main thing I wanted to point out right now is that the "halo effect" might be gone now. If you have any thoughts on the matter, feel free to post them while I do my own testing. Thanks!

Might be useful to see with whom you can advance reputation more clearly. WIll test soon.

Ya, honestly I'm wondering at this point whether the new 1.1 behavior is an outright bug. How are players supposed to know their actual standing with any minor faction now?

Everywhere I go all Empire subfactions are Allied to me... Do I have to fly far far far away to find an Empire subfaction to work with? Or I should stick working with the ones I'm already allied?

Like pichon64, I'm experiencing something similar. I'm a Baron in the Empire, with a Clipper. I'm allied to the MAJOR Empire faction and every MINOR Empire-allied sub-faction I've come across. Is this a bug and if not, where do I go to find Empire sub-factions with a non-allied status?
