What happens to a ship that has it's canopy blown out btw? If the pilot dies can the holocrew also suffocate? Or can they take over the ship controls? If the ship doesn't explode and the holocrew are still in it, one in an SLF, where does the ship owner spawn? Can he go recover his other ship?

Here is a little question:
If we lose the canopy and we are in a ship that carries a fighter; can we transfer to the fighter, just before the air runs out and use the fighter as our life support, while our 'minion' flies the main ship for us?
The devs removed the life support from the SLF's a little while back, not that we could use it as lifeboat anyway. I've always wondered why the imperial fighter has an autopilot hatch cover down at the bottom left of the cockpit, as far as I'm aware they have zero self automation.

I think the lore is that a ship auto-destructs when the helm dies to prevent theft. Hence the explosion.
