LostWinds You guys are sooooo close to being perfect

What more can I say about LostWinds? I love the game. I loved every moment of it. It was only a 3 hour moment, but loved it. You guys have a great platformer/3D engine where Toku can be manipulated to do certain jumps and puzzle solving is extremely well done. I have been recommending this game to everyone, and my favorite part is telling them that it is a $10 download.

You guys are amazing, thanks for delivering such a strong WiiWare title.

The only complaint that I am hearing, and I agree with, is a map. Just a map that has the areas explored and maybe (I was a little lost when they told me to go west of the waterfall) a flashing or "fog of war" outline of a new area. Just some frame of reference. I was only lost for like 15 minutes, but still, it didn't get me down. If you guys put this in the next version (and please make it about 2 hours longer, PLEASE!) this is damn near perfect.

Perfect. Let's get there guys, I am extremely excited for the next boss battles! Make this happen, I will be there waiting and willing to throw money at you. Also, if you make any extras... like a Toku doll, statue, bust or Wind Spirit cursors for my computer, I will worship you.

Thanks for making me extremely proud of my Wii.

exactly, a map will be perfect whit a pen to make cross when we will see a statue or another think.

I have make videotest of it, to show this great game to gamers.

Congratulation frontier

A plushie would be quite literally the most adorable thing ever.
On the whole map issue, it never really occured to me that the game needed one due to it's relatively small size. If such a one were to be included it'ld definately have to fit in with the style of the game, bringing up a menu for example I don't think would sit right, maybe if Toku himself pulled a map out that the camera zoomed into so you still felt connected with the world.
I can't wait to see what they do the next Boss Fight as well, I don't know why but that battle reminded me alot of Shadow of the Collosus. Bizzare comparison I know but it had that sort of adventurer against impossible being feel to it, a wonderful moment.
I have to stop letting discussion about this game distract me, I have work to do:p

Right, I'll just latch onto this thread then.

This is a first for me: Registering on a developer's online forum merely to praise a game. But, frankly, LostWinds was such a perfect little experience that I just can't help it!

As an older gamer (old enough to have almost lost a year of high school due to Elite on the ZX Spectrum!), I find my gaming time severely restricted these days. You know: Work, family, life… all that. So what I really need is more good yet short gaming experiences, and LostWinds fit the bill perfectly.

Yet, having said that, my major regret on finishing the game was that it wasn't 3 or 4 times as long! :) I'll definitely be back for the sequel…

I'm in exactly the same boat as you! Frontier have just hit the big time with this.

Going to back to the first post, I would have liked a simple map on occasion too. It wasn't essential but I did get lost a couple of times.

I registered myself here especially for the map recommendation, but now I see others had the same idea. :)
You guys at Frontier have done a great job on LostWinds. The whole atmosphere is relaxing and the controls are flawless. I don't see how this could've be done with a regular controller.

I play this game in short session and haven't got through to the end yet, but because of those short sessions I didn't remember the area or town names well and for finding key locations the game uses those area/town names as a point of reference. Now a map would be great, but just making the area name visible once in a while would already help a lot.

Another small detail was the Dutch translation, which wasn't really good. I had to refer to English words to understand the meaning sometimes, because a lot of words seemed to come right out of a translation dictionary. I understand that localization is a way to reach a bigger audience, but the few (young?) people that really need the Dutch translation, because they don't understand Englisch good enough, could have difficulty with it.

Good luck with the sequel. I hope you can keep the original and innovative level high.

i hope you don't get me wrong when i say this, but: don't add maps to this game! seriously.

LW's world layout was desinged perfectly good for natural orientation, and AAMOF, i enjoyed building a mental map during my multiple play-throughs. putting in an actual map would've just made that task another mundane 'check the map' action. basically, the mental cartography is one of the enjoyable challanges the game offers, i don't want to lose it. i'd much rather see the sequel keep the same level of neatness of world layout, rather than trade that for a map.

now, one thing that could add to the sequel is camera zoom's switch-like behavior - keeping your thumb on the d-pad up/down for prolonged periods of time is not fun. basically, any control scheme that requires you to continually press on the wiimote's d-pad while holding the controller in pointer orientation is dubious.

If they did add a map, you wouldn't have to use it. Whenever I hear people say they don't want certain features in games, I don't know why they don't think of that. Don't like it? Don't use it. Simple.

while in principle you're right, in practice it may or may not be as simple, depending how the feature was implemented. if, say, the map was sitting constantly in some corner of the play screen, or, opened up by default in some common/inventory menu you invoke often for other purposes, then it'd be hard not to look at it, even if you really wanted not to.

Game Length and Map

Whilst playing the game I too got lost for a short time. I dont think this was because of a lack of map, rather it was not knowing what each location was called. Perhaps viewable signposts or some such so you know what the places are called. I think a HUD and map would take away from the charm and purity that the game has obviously achieved. The length of the game is not a problem, so long as a sequel or two are present. The downloadable nature of the game make it perfect for a series rather than a standalone game and for $10 a go, no one will have a problem subscribing to this beautiful game. I hope the developers can put as much care into future renditions of lost winds

I second that, a few sign posts and a the names of areas I think would be more in tune with the game than a map.

Instead of just a simple map, could we have Enril's powers summoning a tornado to transport Toku around the map? It worked wonders in Wind Waker.

Hello :) I have just joined the forums because I just finished the game, loved it all the way, and just wanted to share the love. :)

I don't think it's close to being perfect... I think it's *PERFECT* as it is. Adding a few signs might help players get oriented better, but frankly, at least in my case, I truly enjoyed getting lost in the game. I've never been the kind of player that chooses his games based on the graphics quality, but I must confess that just exploring the beautiful enviroments you have created here was just as enjoyable as solving the puzzles themselves.

Also, dunno what's up with people complaining about it lasting 3 or 3.5 hours, because it lasted 6 hours on me, and in any case, I come from the Master System/NES/Megadrive/Super Nintendo era where I'd get to pay up to the equivalent of 60 euros or more for games that wouldn't last more than half an hour, and most of those games remain personal favorites even up to this day. I'd rather play a game that's short and sweet rather than long and convoluted anytime.

Mmmm, nothing else to add. I absolutely loved it, and I can hardly wait for the sequel (Seriously, I hope you release it soon!). :D

Oh, and count me in too if you make a Toku plushie and/or action figure. It would be the most adorable thing ever. x)

Well, I downloaded the game two days ago, finished it yesterday. After some initial uncertainty as to whether I'd made the right choice in dowloading the game, I'm now glad I did.

As I already knew that I was in for a fairly short ride with Lostwinds, it wasn't so much the length that spoilt it for me initially as it was the feeling of, well, quite literally, being lost. As everyone else has said, signposting and/or maps would have made this game so much better. It's a bit of a shame, really. It'd have been such a minor addition to make, but would have made such a difference. I know I personally spent almost half my time playing it the first time feeling hopelessly lost and frustrated.

But yeah, if maps or signs are added in the sequel, it'll be great. The only other thing that bugged me a bit was how some more complex things aren't explained in full detail in-game. I got stuck for ages carrying around a seed that I didn't know what to do with, since I'd accidentally burned a plant. Maybe Enril should explain some new features in a bit more depth next time round.

So yeah, good job overall, I have to say. The game itself is neat, but it's let down a little by being pretty unhelpful at times and perhaps leaving the player to their own devices a bit too much.

Although that said, I'm on my second playthrough now and printed off a map this time. Suddenly the game seems brilliant. =D

Actually, I had a thought;

Is there any way that a map/ signs could be added to the existing game and allow people to redownload an updated version? That one change would certainly make it a heck of a lot better than it already is. I know Nintendo released an update for the Virtual Console version of Mario Kart 64 to fix a bug in it, is there any chance we could see something like this to get maps in Lostwinds?
