You know you're a real explorer when...

You know you're a real explorer when you've visited Beagle Point more often than Sol. :D

I went on both Distant World Expeditions and I'm actually at BP right now. It's the halfway point for the Pegasus Run 3305 circumnavigation expedition. It's kind of strange trip: At the start, we headed out of the bubble going in the opposite direction from BP. I'm hoping to be back in the bubble by the end of the year.

How many of you have been to BP more often than Sol? Got any other "real explorer" stories?

I've probably been to Sol a few more times than Beagle if you count jump-ins.
Total hyperspace distance722,824 ly
Does it not make me a real explorer?

Although I have played ED since launch, I've never once been to Sol or Beagle Point. Never been to a Gaudian site or seen a Thargroid, never part-taken in a community goal or expedition, never seen a generation ship or encountered another player. With zero combat experience and some trading, I'm elite in one discipline only.
I have however travelled from the bubble to Colonia without a fuel scoop ( 5,888 jumps over 11 months ), explored 26,660 systems (systems visited) and just last night I self-destructed for the second time in as many months after I snookered myself into a system I hadn't the jump range to escape from but have wasted no time in returning to the same area some 23,000ly distant. Yes twice!
I consider myself an explorer, just not a very good one. I'm one of those poor lost souls looking for Raxxla, doomed to wander the galaxy forever, a lonely skeleton drifting aimlessly among the stars.

Since the Exploration update, I personally prefer the term space vagabond, though I suppose some other terms might be just as apt... 🤪

But yes, now that you mention it, I've never been to Sol and still don't have the permit.

Oh, here's one...

You know you're a real explorer space vagabond when you've discovered a ringed ELW on the way to Colonia as the crow flies in a system that already had tags in it from two other Commanders.

Visits to Sol: 26 (according to EDD; I've probably been several more times, prior to the journals being a thing).
Visits to Beagle Point: 0.

I consider myself a "true explorer"... which is why I've never been to Beagle Point. The space within 1000 LY of Beagle Point is about as thoroughly explored as the space within 1000 LY of Sol. I prefer to go places no-one else has gone yet. People who go to Beagle Point are "travellers", not "explorers".

Sol, on the other hand, has always been an excellent location for acquiring Federation missions - its only drawback being the lack of missions inbound to Sol. It helps if there's something else to fill the cargo hold for that dead-head run. Back when running Medical Diagnostic Equipment to Service economies in Boom was one of the biggest money-makers in the game, I ran quite a few MDE runs into Sol, then took Federal missions back out again.

Discoveries aren't just what you can tag. This is actually one of the reasons I prefer the term space vagabond, as it distinguishes itself from the limited game progression meta context of "exploration." 🧐

Round two...

You know you're a real explorer space vagabond when you've visited Beagle Point in a 35Ly max range Vulture and made your own two-way auto-plottable route through The Abyss to then share with others.

Well, okay. My personal opinion is that somebody who has shared their finds with others did explore. At least the game itself facilitates this a bit by automatically updating the Codex (when it does work, that is), so if you've happened to find something new there, you don't have to lift a finger to share it with others. Otherwise though, if you don't post / upload what you've found anywhere, then with no information shared, all you did was tagging some things.

Oh, and I just realised that I have been to Sol more than Beagle Point, or many other systems out there, simply because I had to fly there quite a number of times to get distances to Sol for the ELW list when players didn't post that.
