You ruined nostalgia

I am a nostalgic kind of person, but this game has just removed a large (perhaps the main) part of my nostalgia focus. I used to periodically fire up Elite and play it to Average or so, but since ED came out, it seems pointless. And I can't even read old articles about Elite anymore because the reason to do so was all the journalists creaming their knickers about the best game ever. These days, everyone knows about Elite. It's not special to the 84's any more.

Of course, this post is entirely pointless, but I figured that if it happened to me, it must've happened to others. I know nostalgia is a curse, but jeez, I really enjoyed it.

And those starving kids in Africa think THEY have problems...
Edit: Was just a joke, I was harmlessly making fun of the OP for complaining about nostalgia. I have no idea why this is such a scource of anger.

I think that the OP was complimenting ED, not insulting it, as well.]

Nostalgia almost requires that times have changed though, right? I mean you harken back to a different time when immersed in nostalgia. That's what makes "nostalgia," nostalgic... and not "current." :)

I was crap at the original Elite... the worst... So just traded and traded... Asps owned me etc... even trying to chip away at them with mining lasers on the different views was just too hard for me...

BUT NOW, thanks the miracle of modern technology I have a joystick that doesn't unstick from the table when I move it in any direction and thrusters!

Asps now make me laugh with their 'waddling' through space as they eat my LAZORS!

Never forget how lucky we are and how far we've come :)

Ridiculous answer. So, with this logic, happy players can express themselves but nobody has the right to express his displeasure.
Firstly, that was just a joke. How you got what you got from my post is unknown to me, I have really no clue what your thought process is.

Secondly, he wasn't expressing any displeasure about ED, rather he was saying he resents that ED is taking away his nostalgia for the Elite of old by being like the classic.

I dunno what happened to you today mate, but you might want to consider a nap before further posting as you seem a smidge grumpy. You are making up negativity and hostility where previously there was none.

Fighting with mining lasers? ..there's your problem ;)

I don't think so, for the reason you mentionned : "if it happened to me, it must've happened to others".

Perhaps, it's not really "nostalgia", but just the fact that, if you liked a certain style of gameplay (the one you find in old Elite games), you aren't able to find it in ED.
Nothing to do with evolve, even if some tend to think that the more one thing is new, the better it is, u-n-d-o-u-b-t-e-d-l-y ! For an example, I never want to drive an old motorcycle, recent ones are "little jewels" compare to old ones... but this is not the case for everything.

And those starving kids in Africa think THEY have problems...

Someone needs to grow up.

..and contenders for the most idiotic posts of the week right here. Congratulations, gentlemen, those electrons died that you might unload your peerless cogitation upon an unsuspecting world.

OP: Grab OOlite, play it without too many addons- get an authentic Elite experience with actual offline play on modern hardware, if you're that way inclined. It's a really impressive project.

Don't worry! Everything will be alright when the Thargoids return. The problem I can foresee is there won't be any Energy Bombs! Oh the horror of seeing 20 of the drones spawn from a mother ship and the joy of using that Energy Bomb! Ahh, my nostalgia:)

I'm quite suprised at this reaction. My post was just a joke, and I interpreted the OP's post as one of POSITIVITY and I think that he was COMPLIMENTING ED for taking the place of the old, stopping him from feeling nostalgia for Elite 84.

Maybe some sort of war whale with A class sensors and a bunch of turrets could help there :)

No nostalgia, but the happiness of seeing that Elite is not dead and lives with its time. I think that the OP has more of nostalgia in relation to his own past life, than of the nostalgia for the game itself. What I can understand perfectly

Don't laugh, I am working on such a load out on my Python:) I need to be able to shoot the little so and so's from any angle:) oh, I was referring to Thargoid drones, not the pew pew "wings" folks are looking forward to. (Or was I?)

I was just thinking there about what made my 1980's Elite experience a nostalgic one? No internet! No forums! We lived an insular existence. Me and my C64/Amiga, my Jameson Special Cobra no 3 and a load of imagination:)

Not laughing, would be so cool if it worked :)
