Your Cobra MkV Builds

I’ve not had a chance to take my MkV out for a spin yet and will be too busy slapping Cocijo over the weekend.

So I’m interested in what people are doing with it. It seems to have plenty of scope for a bit of light cargo liberation and general run around.

It's an AWESOME little ship. Even heavily loaded down with reactive armour (heavy duty, deep plating), HRP (ditto) and another HRP (reflective), plus 3 A-class shield boosters, a full weapons loadout AND an armoured power plant, it boosts to over 580 m/s (G5 dirty drive w. drag drives, obviously), and is extremely agile.

It should be an excellent smuggler, light trader (with teeth!), disruptor (annoying gankers by snaring them, then haring off into the distance before they can get their licks in) . . . oh, and supercruise/SCO handling is butter smooth. To quote Adolf Galland, who test-drove the ME262 Schwalbe (Swallow): "Es ist, als ob ein Engel schiebt." (It's as if an angel were pushing.)

I have 3.
One is an all-purpose mining ship, one is a miniature multirole and the third is just a toy for seeing what it can do.
Unfortunately, I can't post up any builds yet because Coriolis haven't added the CM5 yet and I find EDSY about as intuitive as attempting major surgery on myself while looking in a carnival mirror through somebody else's glasses.
Wearing boxing gloves.
Using plastic cutlery.

I've recently been doing a lot of "macguffin recovery" missions and a lot of those seem to want me to deliver the doodad(s) to Odyssey surface outposts with small pads so the CM5 is the perfect ship.
  • SCO to pick up spot.
  • Launch a couple of limpets to collect the target cargo.
  • Giggle like a schoolgirl if anybody shows up to try and stop me.
  • Make a Roadrunner-style "Meep-meep!" noise before running away at ~600m/sec.
  • SCO to destination, land on small pad and profit.

The mining ship has enough slots for 48t of cargo, 6 Collectors and a C3 Prospector, enough hardpoints for all the mining toys and a C2 beam laser for defence.

The toy just goes very fast at the moment.
Hoping I'll find some sketchy stuff to do with it at some point - bothering megaships and borrowing stuff when nobody's looking.

I just copy pasted internals from my trusty multirole Python to Cobra mk5 with work in progress weaponry, there is a lot of creativity when it comes to weapons. I like ships with odd number of hardpoints, it's perfect and mid one is always for something special like debuff turret, missile pod, rail etc.. Ship works great, honesty she is bit OP for a small one :O My first impression was - where are downsides? As Python mk2 and T8 have downsides, but Cobra doesn't have many limits and can fit into any role. Previous Cobras had many limitations like hardpoint placement, poor pitch rate etc..
In the future I'll be building one or two purely combat Cobras (shielded and nonshielded hull tank), pvp pirate and perhaps explorer.

I am not sure yet if the small hardpoints should have a one corrosive MC, one long range beam with thermal vent, or long range rails.

Prismo build with SCBs is also possible, something like this:

I am not sure yet of heat dissipation, if it's good one can add more SCBs and use them without heatsinks (above is for double bank)

Have to agree, a little over 700 shields with 50%+ resistances (size 3 shields with 3x size 4 GSRP & 2x D resistance augment boosters), 2k hull with 40%+ resistances (lightweight reactive surface hull, size 5 & 3 heavy duty HRP and size 1 HRP for thermal resist), a pretty heavy build still over 600 boost, and it handles like a fully engineered Sidewinder (I'll probably switch to one soon for comparison, slight exaggeration probably). No clue where I'll end up on weapons, running cytos then mc/cannon combo in the mediums to get acquainted with her. Using armored PP I already had, if I wanted to go for more power hungry weapons I would have to sacrifice some shield or run hotter with OC PP I'm guessing.

EDIT: Coriolis updated now.

Still waiting for coriolis too, Stealthie!, your eloquence is excellence!
Engineering mine up but cannot decide what to do with it. Guessing perhaps an all rounder. Mats collector and gunslinger? Still playing with my manadalay too.

I used to have an AspX as my mat' scavving ship due to the jump range.

When I bought my first Mandalay I thought it was a bit "fancy" to replace my AspX but I gave in eventually, bought another one and it is, undeniably, a superb mat' scavving ship.
When I got a CM5 I immediately thought that'd work too but it just doesn't have jump-range as the Mandalay, which allows you to bounce around the bubble in a couple of jumps, or even wayyyy out of the bubble to collect raw mat's easily.

On the plus side, the CM5 is dirt-cheap, which means it costs almost nothing to transfer to wherever you happen to be.
That's why I've built one as a "wildcat" mining ship, also replacing another AspX.
Whenever I happen to fly through a system with likely looking rings, I can dock, transfer the CM5 and then go back when I get the chance and take the CM5 out for a spin.

Thanks all, Neilkski…been playing with builds on Coriolois, can get 65ly on an ‘acceptable’ explorer cobra build…but I think my Mandalay ‘manta ray’ is better…in VR it’s much about the view though.

3.8k hull, with two MRPs, 240mj shields low draw enhanced low power, heatsinks, fully g5 dd thrusters and frags, frags, frags for 1.2k dps and 620m/s boost.
This thing is not a multirole ship, it's a small stealth bomber/hit and run fighter.
Plus it's extremely responsive, extra agile and range control requires very good timing.

I like it 😎

In PvE it's OP, next test: PvP vs meta builds 😬

For PvP I think it will be extremely annoying to fight, especially if built as a hull tank. It's just so fast, agile and small (from the front or back) and the hardpoints are just enough to make it seriously worrying for any other ship.

The Cobras reward high skill (and punish low skill) more than most ships. In particular, the hitbox from the front and rear is very slim, but it's easy to hit from the top and bottom. Boost characteristics are good but "edgy" and the hardpoint and distro limits push you toward skill rather than brute force. The Mk V is a blade of a ship; breakable sideways but you don't want it pointing at you.

Good (EDSY and Coriolis, unengineered)
  • Fastest (unengineered) boost in the game
  • Highest agility in the game (Coriolis). Very fast yaw (great for fixed weapons)
  • Best optional internals of any small ship (Cobra Mk IV is smaller but has one more slot)
  • Third "best" hardpoints of any small ship (behind Vulture and DBX)
  • 4 utility slots

Bad? Not much tbh but there are some downsides / reasons to go with other small ships:
  • Courier has it beat on hull tonnage (so, shields, jump, a few other things that key off that)
  • Not the best small ship for jump range
  • Not the best thermals. Not bad, but feels a little warm? Nowhere near as good as DBX.
  • Can't fit "ludicrous speed" thrusters (but it's still extremely fast)
  • Vulture has bigger distro. DBX has bigger FSD. DBX has bigger fuel tank (jump but also plasma slug). Courier has better shields and speed. Viper is smaller and faster.

For small ship PvP I can see reasons for Vulture, DBX, Viper and Courier over the MkV depending on what you're going for. It's a bump but not OP.
Definitely my new favourite ship though. The MkIII was up there, but the MkV is really something special.

Got to say though, the promotional store pictures for the MkV Stellar look awful to me. The dodgiest bits of the ship kit - front wings, clunky blocky bits, extra fins?! It's like they took The Venus of Arles and dressed her in a wig, red nose and a clown suit.

I do really like it in midnight black though. Slinky. Voluptuous, even. With just the flappy wings from the ship kit. The flappy wings definitely add something.

I'll be in my bunk.

I’m not a fan of any of the Stellar kits tbf, it’s like the kits are made by a completely different team to the new ships.

Y'all are obsessed with combat builds!

I will have to put a combat build together at some point. I built this with BGS efficiency, materials gathering and engineering in mind. I initially thought the weapons would be useful for annoying the baddies spawned by mission wrinkles until the fuzz turned up, but they all keep dying before the police even get there...

For PVE, it's OPAF.

Have you seen the Promo' video FDev put out for the CM5?

It looks cool AF in that video.
Very slick, very sexy, very exciting.
...and then, at the end, they leave us with a pic of the Stellar version, which reminds me of THIS. 🫤
