Your favourite wee indie games

The Arma series inc OFP that started things off. They went in with Codemasters part way through, which ended nasty. But they are an indie dev and have produced, in my own personal opinion, the best series for pc gaming ever... That statement I just made means nothing, if your not into mil-sim games.. ;)

Oh boy.

OH BOY OH BOY!

Can it be that we havent mentioned the indiest of indies? The one that if not defined but redefined the genre? You know what I talk of, I'm sure, because it's adorned with menacing spikes and a picture of cheese and there is only one like it.
It's Dwarf Fortress, you bloody noob

Not actually played it myself, but have watched a number of videos by Kruggsmash. The fellow's good at weaving interesting stories based on the antics of his dwarves, ably assisted with drawn artwork showing various scenes.

My favourite has always been Starbound. Is that one still indie? I know it was when it first started.
Played through it so many times now. Have the Frackin Universe add on which increases the complexity to be a wee bit overwhelming, along with a few other mods to counter it a bit like a ridiculously OP gunship and a dozer that can rip through the terrain quickly.
Always feels like there might be something new to find so just keep on travelling through the stars.

That's not a Kruggsmash thing alone. In fact the game's graphics are so atrocious and minimal they invite the mind to imagine how things are playing out. You might have to be inclined to do so, but it's a bit like a book where you imagine the scenery and add some doodads to it. Dwarf Fortress is a bit sandbox where unforeseen things can happen. Like killer carp. That was a bug, but sometimes even bugs deliver good content.
Anyway, I can't leave you with just Kruggsmash without having mentioned Boatmurdered. Such a befitting name, too. Boatmurdered succession fortress has its up and downs in narration but the ups are definitely worth a read.

Wow, that looks like an interesting read. Thanks for sharing that.
It'll probably tie me up for some time now. heh.

I agree, I think we can call BI an Indie (even tho they do have a special branch of software made for military personnel only). I been playing this serie since Operation Flashpoint and will be playing in the future no matter what. I just hope they will move to some new engine in the future.

Speaking of "indie" mil sims, I can add Command serie:

Dwarf Fortress gets a Steam release. Apparently with a graphic version. That will be huge for Threetoe and Toady. Looking forward to it. Best wishes for a good launch.

I usually don't mention that I play DF, because 90% of the people are going "huh? what is that?", and others look at you with a little suspicion :D I keep naming my fortresses Boatmurdered, as a tribute...and in hope that it will be that epic. But it's always rather trivial.
Actually haven't played in a while. Might have something to play in the evening.

It often is, but then there was this time I routed my enzrance over a lava filled caldera. And installed pumps for flamethrowers. Very efficient. Seriously - you gotta try it for removing unwanted features. It's all lava mist, liquid lava, lava steam, fire, boiling blood. An inferno. Hand pumped, can't have some accident with this stuff. Does a hefty imprint on the landscape, too.
And then there were the flash freeze freak accidents in cold biomes.
Or the ones where I forgot what all the levers did.

I'm not 100% sure that this qualifies as an indie game or not, but it's looking like some light-hearted fun, and is on my 'to buy' list.

"Before We Leave is a non-violent city building game set in your own cozy corner of the universe. Rediscover and rebuild civilization. Create a multi-planet resource network. Overcome ancient challenges and fend off hungry space whales."

Kenshi, can be played as anything from a survival game to a city builder to an RPG, I like the really harsh post apoc/low tech sci fi setting.
Mount and blade warband if that counts... the original mount and blade was the first early access game that I knew of, way back in 2006 (I think) Looking forward to Bannerlord.
