Your most played games and why (might help this universe)

Lets see:
Mass Effect (the trilogy) - I like the story, love the characters, cant stop re playing it.
Witcher 3 - same as above, it might be best game of this type I have ever played.
Fallout Nev Vegas/Skyrim - moding those games solo took like 300h :D
Dark Souls 1, 2, 3 - never gets old, every time I play I find new ways of playing it. Amazing serie.
DCS World - my fav flight simulator of them all, have no idea how many hur I could possibly have in it. Great realism.
EVE Online - my toon is 4 years old, best MMO I have ever played because of player driven everything.
Kerbal Space Program - a dream game for ppl that like mods, sandbox and science! Thanks to mods it will never get old.
Elite Dangerous - not playing now but still it consumed many many hours.
Russian Fishing 4/Planet Fishing - not playing the second one anymore (after 500h they messed it up so badly I quit), but enjoying RUF tremendously - dcs of fishing sims!

Modern titles -

Free Cell Solitare ( most days )
Battlefield 4 ( Locker )
Elite Dangerous (of course)
Halo ( played to death )
Far cry ( only to create maps )
Ghost Recon ( early versions )

As a teenager -

*C64

Pitstop II (2 player game with my brother. The only game that ever made me laugh out loud)
Chiller
Cauldron (loved the title music)
Challenger (for Seattle)

*Amiga 1000

Faery Tale Adventure ( riding the goose and bashing the turtle )
The Pawn (loaded just for the title music)
F18 interceptor

World of Warcraft
Skyrim
Oblivion
Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9
Gran Turismo
Halo

In a non specific order.

Elite Dangerous
Frontier
Elite
Carrier Command (on PC and Amiga)
Doom
Psion Flight Simulation
Star Wars Battlefront
Manic Miner
Time Gate
Nitro (Amiga)
Ghostbusters (Spectrum)
Possibly not in that order, though.

Played a whole lot of the games previously mentioned, enjoyed many hours on most....

But the number one time sink, even compared to 5,000 hours on E-D between two platforms, still is....

Jumpgate.

It just had everything I looked for and wanted in an MMO space game. I'll add that nothing since has even come close to the experience.

Arma series by far.
Arma 2 + all the dlc's & the KAI mod conversion for ai, is the game I play the most, plus populate terrains when adding new terrains to that mod.

I play a few other games alot, but nowhere near the hours I've spent in the Arma series.
Getting on for a decade and a half playing Arma.

Also worth a mention are:
ETS2
Space Engineers
NMS
Skywanderers (will be a lasting game to take over from Space Engineers, probably).
Rogue System
Interstellar Rift
Evochron Legacy

Little pew,pew & fun: ED. I may play it much more, depends on what they do with it, eventually. Although I think its more or less finished (great shame).

Most time:

FSX (over a decade)
Elite Dangerous

More recent to earlier mentions:
---------------------------
Skyrim
Fallout: NewVegas

FS2004/2002
Morrowind

Operation: Flashpoint (original before ARMA)
X:Btf, X2, X3:reunion
Balder's Gate2

Frontier & FFE

Diablo2:LoD

Online:
Elite Dangerous
Perpetuum
Tabula Rasa
Auto Assault

Offline:
Supreme Commander
Total Annihilation

all of those games could be played with different strategys, the ARPGs of them allowed for lots of character customisation.
notworthy: the Multiplayer deparetment of FDEV could learn alot from looking at the Diablo2 mechanics

Any game that makes me feel like I am engaging with a living world - either by creating the illusion or at least not spoiling it.

The original Elite succeeds more than any other game here and I still play the Amiga version a lot.
Dwarf Fortress for obvious reasons.
Daggerfall.
Ultima Stygian Abyss
Fallout New Vegas
GTA IV
The Tropico Games

Edit:- How could I forget Distant Worlds. Put hours into this. Truly great game.
Also EVE deserves a mention. I played that a lot back around 2005 when I was hoping it would turn into something like Elite.
Also Elite Dangerous which I also had high hopes for in the beginning and played a lot.

There are some in-development games that I think might be going in a good direction so I play them.

Rogue System - Which has progressed a lot since the linked review
Rimworld

No right or wrong answers ;) Personal opinion and it is great :)

My Elite story might sheard some light on my thinking and my reason :)

Back in the day we had a lot of options and so many things to try, but you listen to what the next guy is saying. Someone I to this day still value in terms of opinion, he said Elite...space game, that is always fun.
For me there were just too many things to adjust to and tried it like for 1 hour or so game time. Never learned the mechanics but it was the first game on my radar that had narcotics in it and no one freaked out ;).

Bought Elite II and again never got into it, weird thing but again a alot of other games where more appealing.

Forgot who put me onto Elite Dangerous, but I heard the kickstarter story and went for a look and bought the beta thing at 129 € and it is the best beta i have ever seen or played...so the deal for that amound of money was worth it to me. I had the spare cash and thought why not help these guys, an investment that I could understand and use straight up.

The team seems sound and I'm new to this level of participation. I come from just being the guy that buys the game, today buyers are the game or can promote it way further than the developer can do.

So the scene has changed and Frontier is doing right but at a cost. But my sense is telling me that they are doing the right thing and it might not be enough but they are trying.

Look at EA and Ubisoft ....in a world of hurt.

Base Elite game is still sound if you as k me :)

It is not the best but far from the worst, and they hae a great player base which they listen to, that keeps most things in check.

129€ for a game is steep but it was money I was prepared to loose in this cause. I could have gotten a bigger return on something else, i made a choice and went with it :)

Also I got my investment back by winning the top price last year.

I like the way they do stuff not all but the bigger picture is bold and sound in my book :)

peace and merry x-mas :)

Elite: Dangerous
Frontier: First Encounters
Neverwinter Nights 2
Diablo 2
Final Fantasy 7/8
Chaos: Battle of the Wizards (Speccy version)
Rogue/Angband/Moria/etc.
Medieval Total War (1 and 2)
Daggerfall/Morrowind (later ones didn't really hold my attention, too much focus on graphics, not enough on gameplay).
Star Trek: Armada 2 (with and without mods).
Age of Empires 2

1. Heroes of might and magic III (PC)

Why?

- a very deep and complex game (multiple layers of interconnected and interdependent gameplay elements)
- well balanced
- very rich in content, both gameplay wise (very long campaign + tens of single scenarios + map editor/creator + random map generator + very active and creative community) and graphics/assets wise (multiple models for a single type of thing - just because it adds variety, multiple races, each with its own unique city and units, multiple land types etc.)
- beautiful graphics that have aged incredibly well
- timeless varied music, that is some of the best in the industry and great memorable sound effects https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7PddNlM8kY
- attention to detail all around
- excellent both in solo and in multiplayer
- weather you like short sessions, or 12 hours marathons this game provides, each move is full of hard choices that have meaningful consequences, each minute is fun
- competition does not even come close, even after all those years

2. Frontier: Elite 2 (A500)

Why?

I don`t think I can say it better that this video (its not mine, thanks to Jim from JIMPLAYSGAMES for making this series) but i`ll try to be consequent

- A marvel, a technical achievement on many many levels,
- seamless planetary landings (unlike E:D), orrery map, stardreamer
- newtonian physics and flight model based on them,
- unique well defined world
- Excellent use of PG and RNG, it added so much to the game, (E:D has a nice galaxy too but it seems that PG hinders the game more than it adds to it)
- Nice colour palette, excellent for flat shaded polygons
- One of the best intro sequences in gaming
- fitting music
- has many many "firsts", a truly groundbreaking game

For me elite games go like this Fe2 >>>>>>> FFE > Elite dangerous = elite
Fe2 is simply a masterpiece. E:D is In my opinion a very poor lacklustre and unimpressive game in comparison especially if you take into consideration the amount of computing power we have today vs 1993...

3. Pirates! (A500 version)

Why?

- Pirates! treasure hunting! evil Spaniards! count me in!
- very nice depiction of the era, close to reality and well grounded in history
- excellent atmosphere
- open ended gameplay that unlike some other game manages to provide motivation and a sense of accomplishment
- working background simulation that reacts to player input as well as historical events
- allows for short or long sessions without huge boredom, has well balanced progression
- a simple, self explanatory yet hard game with a well designed learning curve

4. Quake 3: Arena

Why?

- excellent weapon palette design/choice - i don`t think it can be topped, its just perfect as it is, all possible roles fulfilled
- excellent map design (for the most part)
- well ageing graphics
- Controls/movement - its just perfect
- good training/solo mode
- quick and fun, keeps you on your feet all the time, makes your heart race
- active community
- quick sessions, pure fun every second
- John Carmack

5. Dune 2: The battle for Arrakis

- AMAZING atmosphere
- one of the best soundtracks ever, very memorable synths ( just check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WKBjmJCBHw, great for flying in Elite too)
- despite some technical limitations, the gameplay is still top notch and fun on its own, it started the - today classic - RTS formula which only got slightly updated
- Arrakis, Spice, and sandworms - enough said
- Very nice graphics that go perfectly with the music and sounds, excellent use of very limited resources all around, stimulating to your imagination

6. GTA 1 (PC)

- flawless controlls/movement
- a huge lively sandbox that reacts instantly to your input
- pure unrestricted fun but with coherent and well structured campaign and progression
- awesome multiplayer
- humour

7. Carmageddon 1 + splat Pack (now the new carma game because its essentially the same, just improved for modern PC`s) (PC)

- Very impressive physics model that provides variety and fun (each car handles veeeery differently)
- One of the best level designs in the industry, very ingenious and full of out of the box thinking
- feeling of mass and inertia (physics again i know but it deserves another mention)
- revolutionary damage model
- nice humour
- interesting AI

8. Fallout 2 (PC)

Why?

- excellent underlying mechanics (G.U.R.P.S.)
- unique world, atmosphere, characters
- very reactive to player input and non-linear story
- to this day it seems to be the best playgroung for an RPG nut like me
- nice memorable voice acting for the era
- billions of hidden goodies

9 Black tiger (Arcade)

Why?

- very tight controlls
- superb music and graphics that have aged very well
- fast paced,
- unforgiving but fair, very rewarding
- very cool weapon and enemies
- my arcade fun fix

10. Diablo 2 (PC)

Why?

- excellent underlying mechanics
- One of the greatest Soundtracks ever, very very unique (random pick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS8hMuHV7Sg)
- excellent sound effects, unforgettable
- overall atmosphere
- excellent use of RNG that adds to the game and provides re-playability
- controls/movement
- very satisfying, short gameplay loops with enormous variety and richness + reasonable challange
- excellent background story with amazing presentation (via pre rendered videos and ingame monologues)
- Despite all the great deeds of Players, Evil wins!! for the second time now!!! HA!
- revolutionary multiplayer mode

I`m sure I have missed many, I used to play CIV a lot but I like HOMMIII better (they are very different but i have time for 1 turn based strategy in my life) there are also games like ,Marvel superheroes (arcade VS fighter), The settlers, master of orion, X-com, cannon fodder., Rollcage, Arcanum, Transport tycoon, Lemmings, Tekken 3, Dark Seal, Wonderboy in monsterland... a lot of them really... but the above 10 are always on my computer

From the more modern games i would have to nominate WOW and FTL, both for very different reasons but i have put a loooot of time into those two

My oh my... creating this list made me think one thing: WE HAVE REGRESSED SO MUCH when it comes to games. Graphics are better but the rest... well those games win by far with almost anything released in the last decade imo (there are some gems, but non as ground breaking as most of the aforementioned titles were in their time)

For me, games that I have played to death, and in some cases returned to later and played to death again...

Elite (original) on BBC micro & later Amiga
Frontier: Elite 2 - Amiga & later Amiga emulator on PC

The Bard's Tale - various platforms including recently iPhone & Kindle Fire
GTA III/Vice City/IV/V - various Playstations - GTA III & Vice City later on iPhone

PC gaming is all I know, and with that in mind here's my list of my favorite games in no particular order:
HL
TFC
CS, CS : S
Homeworld
Civ IV
Sins of a Solar Empire - full series
Endless Space
The Witcher
Skyrim
World in Conflict
C&C 3 Tiberium Wars
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (I think this was my 1st PC game ever, came with the Dell system I bought).

Every time I see screenshots of Amiga frontier it gives me an excited feeling. Daft I know but I spent months pineing over screenshots of frontier before it launched. Probably my most anticipated game, yes even more than ED. It's like a Pavlovian response much like when I see the spinning cobra and hear the blue Danube of the Amiga elite

Then there was this. Sadly my mum chucked my copy in a clear out in 1994 when I went to uni

Life is too short to make my list, started playing arcade games way back in the late 70's, and been a gamer for getting on for 40 years. Spectrum, arti, amiga, sega, PlayStation, to PC.

1000's of hours in many games over the years from Elite to BF3 and pretty much most of what been listed here and a lot of whats not.

But bar Tempest in the arcade, the 6 years I played Eve, the four I played SWTOR, the 3 reruns of ME 1 2 3 and the countless hours in over games i think the winner would be the BF games must be well over 5K hours maybe nearer 10k I played a lot of it ran clans and servers..so yeah it would be that.
