Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

Indeed agree if we'd still get new and engaging content in "legacy" mode, new ships, weapons, features etc and still get CGs and Galnet etc!

But if it'll just be, "play the old version of the game, until you get bored!", how long will that take most of us?! 😯😂😀🤘
I'm old school. I don't need new shinies to keep me going.

The flight model, audio and graphics (and the universe) of 3.8 is more than enough for me. Add multiplayer to that, and I'm ecstatic. :)

Well … I would assume that most players that haven’t switched to H4 or bought Odyssey yet will instead just quit. I know I have, and there will have to be some very substantial improvements to the Odyssey code base for me to consider flying again.

Oh don’t worry. Frontier has given some™ 3ʳᵈ party developers a 24h advance warning with no additional information. And AFAIK haven’t answered any questions that were directed at them after.

So everything will be just fine.
Inara have already announced they're ditching it.

It's often stated that the game is dedd, in this case I think it does apply to 3.8...

It's nice to get a legacy mode for those that want to do some canyon racing, jump off Mount Neverest, etc. At least the Horizon galaxy is not completely gone and can be revisited, but I don't expect 3.8 to have much life on PC anymore. I'm sorry for the console players that can't/won't migrate and the PC players running old systems, and I hope that they will still be able to enjoy legacy.

Inara's Artie said he'll be supporting 4.0 Live with the website.
It has already been posted in this thread before - but no doubt not everyone has been reading from post #1

Yes, Inara will be ready for the galaxy split at launch. There however won't be two versions for the galaxy data, just live version (no final decision about the legacy/live commander data yet).
With the highlight provided by me, as he didn't say he was ditching anything. Which both you and me knew ;)

I have two basic complaints:
  1. The end of CGs in Horizons 3.8. I understand not having CGs that are 4.0 exclusive content, but is Frontier abandoning all ship trading and bounty hunting CGs in Odyssey? If not, why not mirror those same CGs over on Horizons like they've been doing? Surely it can't be that hard to copy-n-paste some text and settings.
  2. The inability to "import" my Horizons 3.8 CMDR to Odyssey should I decide to upgrade to Odyssey someday in the future.
On the other hand, the "great purge" of the 3.8 galaxy might have some upsides, like a much more "malleable" BGS, a more personal feel (seeing ships in a traffic report or player bounties will be more meaningful), the eventual decluttering of system maps, more stable instancing and server transitions (ie - less Colorful Cobras), and other unconsidered perks.

The irony is that I was actually considering grabbing Odyssey during this latest sale now that it's under $20, but that's when I thought I could easily bounce back and forth between Odyssey and H3.8. Now I feel I'm forced to choose one and forever stick with it, and that makes me less likely to buy Odyssey, not more.

Forcing everyone to 4.0 is their goal

Especially when so many voiced that they'd rather play in 3.8

FD's law - if we can alienate the player base further, we will.

I have no problem moving back to Oddity - but please fix the bugs that are making 3.8 so much more playable.

More aggravating is that they won't even acknowledge the issues raised.

I'm ok either way - but undecided on moving to Oddity from 3.8 as my primary play environment. I'll certainly look at 14, but if still has terrible thruster calibration, I'll probably just go back to 3.8 and call it "end game"

Forcing everyone to 4.0 is their goal
If that is their goal, it backfired. As I said before, I was giving some serious thought into grabbing Odyssey during this latest sale, with the presupposition that I would be able to experience some of the cool on-foot features like walking around my ships and visiting some bases, then return to Horizons 3.8 to continue flying those spaceships with much better performance, lighting, VR support, etc. But with the removal of "cross-save", this is no longer the case. Odyssey is now truly an entirely separate game, not DLC for the Horizons I enjoy. And since walking around my ships is mere icing on the cake of actually flying those ships, I just don't see the point in investing in Odyssey, not while it continues to suffer from performance and terrible lighting issues.

No thank you, I'll pass. I'm just glad Frontier made this announcement before I pulled the trigger. Though to be fair to Frontier, I don't think their goal was to strong-arm people into playing 4.0. I think they had little choice but to split the galaxy, due to the way 4.0 is fundamentally different than 3.8 under-the-hood. I've said it before, and this is now the proof in the pudding - Elite Dangerous Odyssey is quite literally Elite Dangerous 2.0, and Elite Dangerous Horizons (4.0) is just Odyssey Lite. Pretending that Odyssey was ever just "downloadable content" for Horizons 3.8 was Frontier's biggest mistake in all of this, IMO.

Of course the sad reality is that only 0.01% of players will read my pleas and act on them, so we're doomed to have systems full of space junk for years to come. This will also affect Odyssey, as you guys will have all the abandoned carriers from 3.8 holdouts like myself (though my carrier is in deep space with services enabled) and the console players. It really is a quite literal mess.
The unfortunate news for this are people are already coordinating abandoned FC locations on discord and Reddit. Space junk for years.

@ Bruce: So, how do i decomission my FC now, get the 5bn and then transfer my account from PS4 to PC to have my assets transfered over in time? Planned decomissioning takes roughly six days, the 29. is only 5 days to go. Also, there are a lot of rare goods stored on my carrier with no way to trade them to friends. Is there any possibility to transfer those over to a new PC account with the transfer?

I do understand that this step had to be made eventually but the timing of the accouncement is not great.
Sorry, but @Bruce G is no longer fielding questions at this time. Please try again soonâ„¢

Frontier could solve this space junk problem by setting all Legacy carriers to automatically start the decommission process on "split" day. Anyone still playing in Legacy (all ten of us) can cancel the decommission, and those who aren't won't lose much even if they do return to Legacy at a later date, since they get most of their credits back.

"Not yet" still means it won't be available straight after the Update. So anyone wanting to continue playing BGS using Inara.cz on Legacy is royally effed.

Maybe now I can play in open without getting rammed coming out of Jameson.
I've not seen a single ganker in 3.8 in months, and I've spent lots of time in Jameson and Deciat looking for them, LOL. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I assumed they all moved to 4.0

ps - my block list has been empty for awhile now.

Well, maybe

ok, didn’t read it correctly. That would be a good option

That is a great idea. But, you've been around long enough to know the probability of FDev doing something like that.
