The Thargoid War: System States Clarifications

If the progress bar is filled at the end of a week, the state will be pushed back and Thargoids will be defeated in that system. If not, the bar is reset for the next week.

This sounds too much like a game rather than an immersive simulation. Bars shouldn't reset, it should gradually go one way or the other. Partial progress should be rewarded too.

Should an immersive simulation have a progress bar at all?
Yeah... since we don't have visual confirmations of damage, intel info from local commanding HQ, strategic estimate and other stuff which tell us how we stand on the battlefield.
All that is in a simple progress bar 🤷‍♂️

I don't like idea of resets, but some people behave here like it would mean end of universe, bubble, and their only game, which they know :D

Not defending FDev in the slightest but I understand what they're doing here. I also believe it was implemented awkwardly and also see two problems here:

Given they're sticking to their guns with their "What's done is done approach" (obviously leaving room for many, many CGs down the road to repair these stations should the players ever win this thing) it looks like the entire system is designed to encourage players to take loss and build strategies based on those loses. Except we're looking at a war on multiple fronts and unless we have enough coordinated Squadrons we're basically dummy-firing a crap ton of solo and winged players at this thing in hopes we'll eventually put out a fire with pure numbers.

And as everyone has already mentioned it's demoralizing to watch that counter reset to zero at the end of the day. Again, I get that you're giving us an opportunity to fall back and gather our resources instead of just letting the Goids clear the bubble in one fail swoop, but isn't there a better way y'all coulda represented that on the scoreboard? I know it's too late to change anything now but c'mon y'all. Not complaining the system itself needs to be easier to coast through, heck no, just reported better, somehow. Not gonna start throwing out "How abouts..." either because I'm not on the payroll. But c'monnnn, you make-a my mudda cry 🤌

So, I gather from Reddit the progress bar reset thing applies to that specific location (station, settlement, etc). I missed that detail.

Interesting. Is this true? I was just wondering about that myself. From the screenshots being shown, it seemed like there was only system-level progress.

The Invasion state could be considered to be multiple separate states
  • Invasion Danger 4 (four to six stations left)
  • Invasion Danger 3 (two or three stations left)
  • Invasion Danger 2 (one station left)
  • Invasion Danger 1 (no stations left)
In each state a number of stations are targeted, and lost at the end of the week if the defence fails to move the invasion to the next danger level.

So it could be viewed as a series of separate battles over a station (or set of stations) each week, and so progress (failing to) protect Station A doesn't help with protecting Station B.

(But if you protect Station A in Invasion Danger 3, the Thargoids decide the system isn't worth throwing more forces at right now and so you never have to defend Station B at all)

It is a little jarring to suddenly have the galaxy map presenting it all in such a way, tutorial and all, but I'll take it over the previous method of fighting blindfolded.
If one participates in an election, you notice that at the end an evaluation is often presented as a bar chart, for example. Is that "gamey"?
My question was about the concept of "immersive simulation" in response to:

First, I loathe that people speak of Elite as a mere game. But then that's my problem, I really can't push it off on others. Sigh. So anyway -

I play exclusively in VR and never get out of my ship (flatland). I'm going for immersive simulation in the sense of "As close to real life in a thousand years or so as I can get, kinda sorta."

I have noticed that my life has no progress bar, as far as I've been able to find. I'm still alive. Yay me. I look around and see my stuff. Yay me. That's really the extent of any progress bars in my life.

I was in a war long ago. There was no progress bar then either.

That's what I'm currently getting from EDO.

Of course this should not be seen as me objecting to others wanting, perhaps getting, a progress bar. (I don't.) I just think this is plenty realistic enough. For me. In the spirit of immersive simulation as I understand it.

Sounds like they tweaked it in the background, and apparently also made an allusion to it in Galnet, but said nothing publicly despite 600+ posts in this thread. That's not the way to communicate when there's community uproar outside the game.
"Never Explain, And Carry On".

The only way I see them regaining a semblance of trust from that portion of the community is if they very publicly and clearly own up to their mistake and admit that they handled the launch of the war poorly. That apology must then be followed by a clear explanation as to why they cant change the reset mechanic.
How long have you been watching Frontier?
