Elite Dangerous Exobiology Rank Threshold Rebalance Information

There is a chance that with the new ranking, you'd be somewhere at Elite1 or even under.
IF you really want to find out, you can indeed ask them to have your displayed rank match your "experience" gains
That's exactly what a lot of people are asking for. I was Elite 1 before the rework. I'll be around collector if they reset. I'd rather I be collector and see my progress and have a real comparison with others than the current mess. There are other better options they could do, but even a brain dead nerf of ranks would be better than it currently is.

Why not let the people just have fun with their new ranks and let it be? In the history of Elite there have been so many gold rushes in other ranks that earned CMDRs quick ranks before a nerf was placed. Let it be.
Can you share some examples of this? I can't think of any in the 7 or so years I've been playing. There have been rushes that people missed, but normally there have still been other rushes and nothing even in the same order of magnitude (or even several orders of magnitude) as what we've seen here.

Just out of curiosity what does this amount to in stratum tectonica?

I remember pre-U14 it was at least 100-150 first discovered stratum tectonica (the optimal plant to scan since it's plentiful and easy to spot) to get an elite rank.
The amount went up by 20 and the need seems to have gone up by 30, if that's correct, then it would now take 50% more, so 150-225 new discoveries, though I think new discoveries may have also had their multiplier increased, if that's working, then it should actually drop it back down to around 75-118 new discoveries, but it makes it a whole heck of a lot if you are using known discoveries (like 500ish).

Hi FDEV,

I made Elite in Exobiology on 09-NOV (that's 20 days before Update 14 dropped) and was working towards Elite I with over Cr92m held on board, having already progressed ~11% (basically I would have been at 53% to Elite I. I have since sold further data I should be further along.

???????????????????????
Is there any news why this is?
Odd, if you hear something I'm curious about it. Having everyone's drop to where it actually is with the new levels would be better than it is now, but I'm still seeing Elite on mine (which I also had pre-U14) and mine hasn't dropped, so I'm not sure what is going on.

I bet if you now go and hand in enough samples that your "virtual" rank would level up, you will receive an "award" message with the demotion. They simply forgot about the rank-up event.

You do use the ship to make short hops and try to land in a place with 2 different species every 3 hops so you can finish up one and start on the next one without having to take off/land again. You also focus on stuff that grows in flat areas and ignore the stuff that only grows in extremely uneven terrain/cliff sides. If you don't see multiple other plants in the area while scanning the first one you go to another planet instead of wasting time finding a good area in a planet that might only have sparse plant life all over. This especially applies to bacteria - don't go for them while trying to be efficient unless you've seen many while looking for other plants and know they're plentiful and easy to spot.

The main time waster overall imo is overcommitting to trying to scan a plant that turns out to be hard to find when you could just go to another planet instead.
I wouldn't recommend players to use that kind of speedrun gameplay style there. The idea of the exobiology gameplay is to find all the species on a planet. There is no hurry, at least not with the current huge payouts. But of course it's not meant to be overly boring either, so if some species is hard to find, it's understandable that one wants to give up with it at some point. For example, I have already found all colour variants of Fungoida Setisis, so I'm not very motivated to search for them anymore.

Ah, that makes sense. Kind of makes an interesting proposition about people having to decide if they want to keep their rank or be able to cash in on the easy credits. Hopefully this means that things will be in a bad enough state that they decide to just do a flat out re-calculation.

Honestly, I do both depending on my mood. Sometimes I focus on all known high values, other times I decide to just go for whatever looks easy. I also will sometimes mix it up mid run if I see a planet where it looks really easy to get some other samples with decent values quickly. Pretty much never worth doing bacteria though, not unless they start offering a full planet bonus.

Bacterial colonies are often very easy to see from the air, from about 100 meters altitude, but that depends on terrain type.

I support that full planet bonus idea. (y)

Thanks to those who have been sharing their data, all very helpful. The latest figures seem to suggest a 7x increase in rank requirements against a 20x increase in rewards.

This would suggest that those who did the grind before update 14 are being heavily punished. If you got to Elite V you are now at Geneticist.

It's going to take me a week's solid grind to get back to pre-patch 14 levels, but after that point the grind will be 3 times faster (20 / 7). So, whilst they did make a royal mess of things, if it really is a 7x increase, then I think I can live with it. It'll be another 30 days grind to Elite, and 77 more days after that till Elite V. I'm working on a 100M return on a gaming session (milage may vary).

do you have those figures? because my own figures seem to imply that at least the first rank is 15x compared to the old first rank

I'm using Evoflash's data. He went from Elite V to Geneticist. I've had to guess a few figures but I think he's on about 1.78B

It could be that they have remodelled the curve, with the lower ranks slower than the higher ones, but still quicker than before. What we won't know for a while is if Elite to Elite V is 7x or less.

Im fine with the rank readjustment - I called for it. What I’m not fine with is being demoted below (way below!) the rank I achieved prior to the update 14 patch.
Perhaps you now understand why you don't call for such things if FDev is involved. A hard lesson, but think about those that knew this before and are now in the same misery with you.

This happened with the Ammonia world CG , Fdev increased payout from one system. Many people then did r2r to get elite quickly . But those who got elite before they sorted it out kept it and after Fdev fixed it ( they took off the bonus for elite ranking ) . So it's not like it never happened before ?? And the prestige ranks well the less said about them the better in my opinion

Many since I have embarked from the very beginning (backer here). Remember the Low Temperature Diamondas before Mining was nerfed? Or the broken Trading where you could double your commodities? There was one where you could park on a captital ship and set your turrets to auto fire, farming combat rank in CZs in a breeze. The list goes on and on. Eventually these things got fixed but never took away ranks or credits earned from the ones using them.

To confirm also on my wording here:
"You have not, at this moment in time, lost progression."

^ I'm not implying you'll lose progression at all. I'm just doubling down on the fact that right now, regardless of what your percentage says (RIGHT NOW, YES NOW!) this is inaccurate information in the UI. You have not lost progression.
Yeah right. FDev effectivelly reset ranks to 5 on update 14.01 because any progress made before update 14 contribute only by 5% by now.
