We are winning, the tide has turned HIP 23716

I’m not kidding when I say we should just hang back and let things burn for a while. I saw this for several reasons.

1. FDEV have said this is a long term event, we’re not meant to win this now and push the Thargoids back to 0. We’re just burning ourselves out trying at this point.

2. Right now winning back systems might be a futile attempt as it might just revert back to alert status but I guess we’ll find this out soon if we win a system this week.

3. We sit back and “tech up” with the current CGs which will make the eventual fights much easier.

4. We spend our efforts now scouting, probing, and trying to figure out what the Thargoids’ goals and strategy is. FDEV have hinted that their actions now are not random and they have a strategy in mind. We need to figure out what that is.

5. The Orthrus - it’s significant, we should try and figure out that significance. Seems to be involved with logistics and easy to kill so kill as many as possible. Minimal effort and maximum pain for the Thargoids.

6. If the Thargoid spreading out mechanics are true, it will be much easier later so we can pick and choose what systems we really want.

I don’t believe it was. It’s probably another surprise mechanic waiting for us. If it does switch back to alert status within a short amount of time then this is all just completely pointless.
No, because it will block the slot for another system that then remains safe.

Hmm, well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. Only FDev can action changes to the game, and they're certainly not obliged to do so if they feel it unwarranted. So, how this all progresses is entirely down to them. All players can do is provide feedback on it and accept their decisions.

Or, you know, you have some fun. No need to "burn yourself out" over a game no matter what.

Is there a consensus on what is the most useful reward for non-combat missions? I was choosing Influence but then then the feedback looks like the sub-faction gains clout when I choose that.
That makes me worry it's not the most helpful option for repelling the invasion.

There's a lot to be said for folks having fun the way they want. But even from a purely pragmatic angle I think it would be wise to push through and save a system or two if possible. Essentially because of your point #2 here - right now with no systems recovered there's a whole branch of states and interactions lying there wholly untested. Both we and FDev would benefit from the recovery state getting some field testing, even if it's not currently practical to recapture a meaningful number of systems.

Political BGS is frozen in the Alert/Invasion systems, so Influence probably doesn't do anything useful there; none of the other reward options have ever directly helped the issuer more than any other. I'd just go for materials if it's offering some you're short of.

Thanks. I feel enabled now!

Taking rep seems to give more towards superpower rank if you require that.

Update

This will cut awfully close

Yes let’s keep fighting for HIP 23716. We need to learn what happens after we win/defend a system.
The way it is phrased in the status screen, I guess the stations that got abandoned before will just revert to being under attack. Might turn out to be a 4 out of 7 or 2 out of 3 grind.

A shame really, if progress rolled over we would have been done with HIP 23716 about now, and the community would have felt its first little win in this massive war even though we have 40 other systems with invasion status getting hammered. It would have been an enormous celebration and party on the forums, and squadrons around the world could coordinate and reorganize efforts to another system. Watch it hit 98% and reset to 0, even though there is a week "left". Instead of celebration its now stress and worry, and you better stress that number hits 100% or you will see players participating drop like a bag of bricks.

What we could have had.
I think the Thargoids would send a pretty poor message if the first thing they did was losing against us just within one and a half weeks.
How is that supposed to be a threat?

OK, must be more than ever players now - I use GFN paid subscription and never had to Q until just now, said 3 players ahead of me.
OK maybe not just ED but never Q'ed for play in last 2 months, just saying.
- - - Lets hope most are on ED trying the 2 systems specified for retaking from the Thargoids.

I'd much prefer the Lugh approach where you have the main front line struggle (IMO done as a tug of war) and that Goid strength here can be lessened by deep strikes into the Maelstrom system- more fun, more dynamic and more war-ey than making it another progress bar abstraction.
I absolutely love the idea that the thargoids getting a finite amount of reinforcements that they can spend on pushing the progress bars back, but efforts spent in places other than the system under focus still contribute to consuming those reinforcements.

Just finished a six hour long session ferrying refugees out. Simple stuff, but rather repetitive. Not sure how much it contributes though.
The refugee run is a bit of a bus route, but then it needs to be.
I've just set up a new clipper (still grinding for a cutter) to run cargo but without a functioning commodity market we're down to emergency supply orders.
I brought my carrier up so I can stock it with the commodities that come up and just run back and forth with the orders.
