Elite Dangerous Exobiology Rank Threshold Rebalance Information

Some data points from personal experience:

Prior to 14.00 I have 88M in Exo credits cashed in already, and a rank of Taxonomist at 20%. I have no Exo samples on my person.

14.00 hits. I sample a planet with about 2 species, both already logged before. That nets me 25M and pushed my Exo rank up to Taxonomist 65%. My Exo bank is at 114M.

14.01 hits. It has been a few weeks now. My Exo rank appeared to be reset to Taxonomist 0% at the time of the patch. I go and collect a whole bunch of samples, almost all of which are new and never logged before. Handing them in, I gain 1.7B credits (1.35B of which consists of first logging bonuses). Rank is restored to Taxonomist 65%.

I just started the Exobiology rank climb from zero. Turned in 12,934,900 CR, and I am only 57% to the first level-up, so that puts it around 22,500,000 CR for Mostly Directionless where it used to be 1,500,000 CR based on the Wiki.
scan water planets - you will get like 30-60mln per planet with up to 9 specific plants to scan; there are many around Sol system with 1-4 water planets per system; only cactoid scan earns you ~12mln

What I don't understand is that previous payouts were minimal so despite my handing in loads of data prior to update based on the "new" rankings I have not made much progress. If the data I had (already) handed in was paid at the same rate as current payouts I would have made significantly more and would therefore be higher rank. It seems unfair that a newbie exobio will have to sell significantly less data overall to reach the same rank as me now. The "re-calculation" should have taken into account the (massively) lower payouts prior to the update and multiplied up the amount that commanders had already handed in according to the new values. I was getting 75k for bacterium aurasis before -- now it's 1m for one sample so to get the same rank progression as a newbie i would have had to hand in 13 samples so much of my prior work is acutally been wiped out!

Indeed.
Let's think about elite in exobiology which require 6 billions.
I was at 50% of road from 0 to elite.
So I needed 200m before U14, and 3 billions after U14.
So now, after scanns for (I think) 700/800 millions I see 0 progress. If it could be done properly I would sit somewhere at 30% of geneticist. But I'm at 0%, because 0-geneticist require probabl 3b, and geneticist-elite require next 3b. Meanwhile I earned nearly 1b. So I was at 50% road to elite, but now I have to earn next 2 billions to see first %, and after it 3 billions for last 99%, what effectively wiped my whole rank progress :)

To be fair, for me it isn't big problem, because ranks based on credits are STUPID, inara has better badges, and I did a lot of exobio because I LIKE this gameloop (great bonus for exploration, looking for this all species usually generate great screens), not because "I have to complete everything".
I'm only saying that stupid feature is...well, stupid.

I like my ecologist status made during this bio event (that is how I treat it). Also I like this blue color suit (so if I do not plan to do exobiology any more I will not wear it anyway). I am also a proud owner of Helpless in CQC. I think Fdev can do changes to exobiology being more interesting. Moneywise it was an absolutely right move that should be done together with rank changes. The freebee players got was just an advanced promotion, now we have to really earn it. Somebody said that half a billion a day it is too much. I would correct it - if you are good at something it makes thing easier. I made less than 400mln Cr for three days playing only exobiology. In other activity I am good at I could make more than a billion for these three days. So I guess the pay is just right, the changes in ranking also are correct.
Three types of complains
1. Somebody got exobiology ranks before the update 14 and is afraid to loose the progress with the new system in place. If you like the exobiology, it does not change much for you except a bigger pay which is a nice thing to have anyway to pay for your FC upkeep. You will still do exobiology when you reach Elite because you like it, won't you?

2. Somebody got through ranks at the event from zero to hero (like me) and now is getting upset that it will be reset. If you did not like the exobio, you do not need to play it, the rank will stay as it is. You did not get to Elite? Well, you had the chance. You do not get anything to be an Elite (apart the first one - access to Jameson). Triple Elite? It is actually shame to have the logo on your ship - it is like a mark telling "I am a looser and do not have a real life".
3. Everything is and will be wrong type. The pay is too much but the new Elite rank is too high (the new ranking system is actually less time consuming with the bigger pay - less hours to reach Elite). It is not like one person saying contradictory things, there are people on both sides and as long as it is more or less equal, it is well balanced.
CMDR, are you trolling? Do you read and understand your own text? maybe English isn't your first language but calling all Triple Elite CMDRs losers with no life is kinda rude.
There have been other complaints than the ones you stated: how about the CMDRs that got demoted because the gamefix in U14.01 didn't multiply the value of the scans prior to U14?

@sallymorganmoore , can we get an acknowledgment form Frontier that there is a problem and you guys are working on it? It's been a while since we heard from You.
when I shared my timeline post somewhere back in this thread on Twitter, I was advised by @frontier_help on Twitter to raise a ticket which doesn't seem correct to me, but I've done so and shared the relevant journal entires. Should be fairly slow going given holiday period but I'll come back here with any news.

Unless they'll do any server side fixes (which i dont think they will do given the winter holiday slowdown), any changes may come with the January patch hinted here
However, there is no mentioning of any exobio issues to be fixed.

So i can presume what we got is the thing.
  • the 14.1 reduction in base payment (reduction compared to 14.0 payments)
  • the fix of first discovery bonus so it actually pays 4x the base price
  • the scaling of old ranks by a 15x-16x multiplication factor, but without updating the player gains pre-U14 to match the current ranks post U14, requiring players to regrind back the progress they lost due to rescaling of ranks

Yeah I get that Canonn are doing that but really? Why on earth isn’t it available to view? It’s strange that we play this game and so much of the info is unavailable and has to be gathered from offline sources.
Using guides outside of games is not new or unique to Elite Dangerous by a long stretch. Most modern games that allow for the depth of info that a game like Elite Dangerous has have similar websites.

It would be cool if Frontier created a web-browser widget that allowed only certified community based websites to present them in an ingame themed browser to help keep the immersion going, but it might be a lot of effort for something that people just prefer to tab out to gain instead anyway. Though inara & eddb etc. would be pretty cool to access with the in-universe look and feel...

My thoughts precisely too.

I just want to see the pricelist and the ranking requirements. I don't think it's much really, and obfuscating these data leads to confusion, rumour and ill-founded conclusions.

I would think that the leading exploration Squads like IGAU and others would have a better idea as they deal with that information or even those who get hints from the horse's mouth 😉😉. So Fdev do lettuce know just not directly.

But for the average player all paths towards that kind of information seem to be completely waldorf.

If you are proud that you sank so many hours into the computer game rather than spent in the real life with your family/friends, I do apologize. The matter is not about language or geography, we are probably from different worlds.
In my world: what did you get from spending so many hours playing the game? How did it improve your real life? Do you know anyone in the real life who appreciates your triple elite status? Would you wear a t- with triple elite status all over it?
My friend lost his family because he played Elite a lot (I talked to his wife and Elite was the only reason: "too much time devoted to the game"). This was not ED but the first Elite. He was Legend in ranks but we, his friends, did not really care. We did play a bit but mostly studied, organized a profitable company (he decided not to join as he was busy with Elite), enjoyed the real life a lot. I am not proud to be Elite in some activities. There is no contradiction in what I wrote. I like Ecologist status purely because how it sounds/some meaning for me. In fact, I could do Elite (I expected that it would change on the server restart) but I decided to hang out with my wife that weekend and really enjoyed it (no regrets whatsoever not getting Elite in exobiology).
"Do you read and understand your own text" - if you explain what you meant, I can clarify for you. If it is about only the triple elite I explained above.
Once again, I do not consider triple elite a major achievement. Even playing every day a bit through all the years, a player eventually will get the status. My point is, it is not someone should be really proud of, at least in my world. Even in the game world, some (including myself) Elite players are not competent in the categories. I did my Elite in exploration by doing passenger missions (I did not want to get Elite, I was just making money for my FC). I do not know much about "out of the bubble" exploration (I just went to the black hole once).

It fits perfectly into category 1. As it has being confirmed by some commanders who do enjoy exobiology and got the most hit by the rank recalculation.
Players who made some progress prior to 14 in exobiology should get their pre-14 credits multiplied for rank calculation. It did not work immediately or perfectly but it should be dealt at case by case basis (I found FDev support being very helpful). My understanding is that it did not hit you particularly as you refer to other players.
Can you look at it at another angle?
Players were complaining rightfully that exobiology does not pay much. FDev heard that and decided to increase the payment multifold. Of course, they did not think through to adjust the credits acquired previously and change the ranking system. Mistakes happened.
What is important?
In a long term, players got a well enough paid activity.
There is a rank cap; everyone who likes the activity eventually will get to the cap.
What is the fuss about?
Are you trying to achieve that FDev before implementing any changes requested by players think twice or avoid even doing small changes?

"look at me, I'm so special, because I play less than you, no fun allowed, you can do only things, which impove your salary"
it is not about salary. It is not about money. It is about your real life (every second of it). I should sadly say that I have too many hours in the game (more than 1400 hours).
Nothing is to brag about. Yeah, it is recreational but there are other activities with friends / family that might bring more joy for me AND my family.
