Hello CMDRs,
My name is CMDR DeathMagnet. I started playing Elite Dangerous way back in the beginning and one thing known about me is my ability to grind. And as we all know; Elite has some serious grind. One of these grinds is the engineering grind, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Thanks to some amazing guides by the likes of Hawkes Gaming and Down to Earth Astronomy (if either of these content creators would like to get involved, please reach out via the Coalition discord), the engineering grind doesn’t have to be that difficult. The Mercs of Mikunn and I would like to help any CMDRs that would like to jump into engineering but may not have the resources, time or knowledge to make it easy. We will be using the fleet carrier, MoM – Stargazer H2J-W2Z, for an expedition to the areas in these guides (guides linked at the end of this post) and anyone that wants to tag along is more than welcome to join.
What will I need?
Minimum requirements – Any ship able to equip a scarab variant rover and detailed surface scanner. No cargo capacity required.
Recommended Requirements – An Asp Explorer, DBX, DBS or any other ship with decent to good jump range and CMDR equipped with Artemis suite. (You may be asking why I need jump range if I am tagging along on a carrier? Why do I need an Artemis suit? More on that later) Must be equipped with a scarab variant rover and a detailed surface scanner is highly recommended. No cargo capacity required.
How to prepare
Before joining the tour, you will want to trade down any and all Polonium, Ruthenium, Technetium, Selenium, Yttrium and Antimony that you may have. These are the materials we will be farming and you will quickly fill up on these materials. Best to trade down whatever you have for the lower rarity items so that you can collect as much of the tier 4 mats as possible while you are out there.
You will also want to trade down all Modified Consumer Firmware, Cracked Industrial Firmware, Atypical Encryption Archives and Adaptive Encryptors Capture.
Watch both videos linked down below. Video is time stamped if necessary but watching both videos in their entirety is recommended.
Make sure you are docked on the carrier prior to departure times. Carrier departure times will not be changed.
What Makes these locations special?
These locations offer crystal shard clusters that only spawn these rare resources. Prior to Odyssey, it was easy to identify these locations from space with a detailed surface scanner. Though you can no longer identify exact locations from space, they still offer dense clusters of shard forests that allow you to quickly farm up rare resources in a short period of time. (Check videos linked at the end of this post). Make sure you use your scanner filter.

Other notes –
- Make sure you board the correct carrier. Carrier names can be changed but the designation number assigned to each carrier cannot. Be sure to board the Nautilus Class MOM – STARGAZER H2J-W2Z. You may consider bringing a decent exploration ship with you. Some of this farming can be done in a matter of just a few hours. If you get bored you can go out and get some exploration data which can be worth a decent amount of money, especially if you are just starting out, the payout can be really good for not much effort.
- An Artemis suit should be equipped for the same reason as above. Exploration data can be worth a good number of credits and could be done in conjunction with farming.
- MOM – STARGAZER H2J-W2Z will be purchasing and selling the following item. (These items are needed to unlock guardian tech.)
Reinforced Mounting Plates

Magnetic Emitter Coils
