Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Yes, after I'd found the second type, I skimmed around in the ship for a short while in case I came across any more types but without success, and as I had no idea if any more types were there I soon gave up and moved on!
I kinda suspect it's because Brain Trees are a Horizons biological and the System Map doesn't differentiate between colors (but it should). I've never seen more than 1 color of anything else on a planet, anyway.

Necro reply...

What rank are they now? Deadly?
Still Elite but with reduced payouts in XP and bonds IIRC.

Yes, it will work in as much as you'll get a signal for any outcrops or meteorites etc that happen to pop up in Ody or EDH LIve, but these will appear as targets anyway if any are present, without needing the wave scanner. If these targets begin to appear, you can also go into contacts in the left-hand panel where they will be listed and you can target them from there if you wish.
Yes but the wave scanner will lead you too those targets from kilometres away whereas the pop up range for targeting and contacts is only a few hundred metres at most.

I've found that in Ody, hoping to find targets in ordinary rocks with the wave scanner just does not happen, as it did in the old Horizons and I guess now only in the legacy one.
I have never seen or heard of that in all my years of playing before Odyssey launched, the wave scanner only lead me to meteorites, outcrops, geo sites such as geysers and artefacts like ships or canisters.

I've never seen a brain tree. I must get out mre.
Those ones on that body I was on earlier were the first ones I'd ever found as well. From what I've read though, there's quite a few around near the Guardian structures in craters but so far, I've not visited any of those yet.

I haven't spent much time searching the planets, but I've come across systems with several moons containing either 1, 2, or 3 all growing in the same place. I suspect moons with just 1 variety is much more common.

Oh well, looks like we must be playing different games then as I never get any mats from ordinary rocks in Ody, even when signals appear to come from them in the wave scanner. That's the point I'm making - ie you will NEVER get any mats from ordinary rocks in Ody, as you could in the old, pre Update 14 Horizons.

...

1. I never said you get materials from ordinary rocks - YOU DID.

2. You are grossly mistaken NEVER EVER do you get materials from ordinary rocks and NEVER EVER will the wavescanner give signals for ordinary rocks.

If you want to prove contrary to this then I suggest OBS studio for the video you need to make.

Complete nonsense

So you haven't played the "old" Horizons since May 2021.
I guess that your memory is playing tricks on you, as it does to all of us.
The longer an event is ago, the hazier gets the memory and some parts will be filled in with what the brain deems fitting, no matter if it is correct or not.
I started playing in April of this year, when Legacy still was Horizons 3.8. I know the videos you refer to, but I never saw anything that an ordinary rock would be the source of some materials. The scanner would, read correctly, lead you to three different types of material sources: Chondrite, Outcrops and Meteorites. And you would have to drive over and around thousands of ordinary rocks to get there. (Nothing has changed in this regard since the rebranding.)
Those Chondrite ones sometimes look a little like ordinary rocks, depending on the surface of the planet you find them on. Maybe that made your brain think you could farm those mats from ordinary rocks by scanning them with the wave scanner. Or this was a mechanic from way before when you started your journey.

I played in 2015 for several months, then stopped until a few months ago and now play Odyssey. When I was playing in 2015 though, there was no ability to land on bodies and therefore no SRVs either.

However, I have seen a video somewhere about prospecting in the old Horizons, in which the wave scanner appeared to be giving signals from ordinary rocks and targets would pop up, which would then drop various mats when fired at, but I've been searching and can't find that video now. That said, the person who made the video did say that it was only the "small rocks" that had the mats but I guess its possible that he might have been referring to meteorites or whatever that were about the same size as small rocks. He just called them "rocks" though. I wish I could find that same video now, but I guess it doesn't really matter as its only academic anyway re Ody!

Righto.

I won't be playing any more this year so I'd like to take the opportunity to wish you a Happry New Year - I'll see you on the other side :D

A gratuitous high res of my AspX in lovely stygian green - next year I think I'll head out to the Guardians in her because she's far too underused.

Ok, I guess the video made by somebody that I can no longer find showing mats being collected from "small rocks" was wrong then - they must have been bronzite chondrites or metallic meteorites or whatever. 🙄

However, I'd say you're wrong about the wave scanner never giving signals that appear to comer from ordinary rocks as I've seen strong signals appear quite a few times when driving around (and no, I don't mean the signal from the ship, in case that's what you're wondering,) but when I have driven towards those signals, no targets pop up and the signals soon disappear.

Happy new year and congratulations for creating the most fun and engaging bit of social media related to Elite Dangerous I know 😀

That colour, though... Totally gives me those "want!" vibes...
Happy new year, Tyres. And thanks for this great thread.

Oh, I love these ghastly ghost signals. You drive across half of the moon to have them just disappear.
What gives them away, though, is the fact that they don't really narrow down like the normal signals do.
