'Whenever a new player asks what a 30k is, I'm gonna show them this'

On a console near you.... 🤭

Oh, i remember years ago when backers theorycrafted that CIG were making ToW so they could release it on consoles and get people hooked on SC.

Still, not as funny as the faithful when they talked about CIG releasing "StarEngine" as a licensed engine for other companies to use and how companies would be clamoring to use it to make their own games.

So much people here thinking SQ42 will never release or will be crap or passable.
In your opinion, what are the chance that SQ42 could be a really good game at release ?

There are only 2 possible reasons you can be willing to spout such absoloute tosh. One, you are a false actor, or two, you are so far down the copium rabbithole that no amount of rational debate will help you see the reality of the situation.
The third reason is that the tradionnal model let 0% chance to a game to be as complex as SC. The reality of the situation is that the market will never let a AAA studio take big risks as CIG do.
So I'm perfectly fine that CIG takes the hard path directly, skipping the intermediates products that in fact limit what can be done in future games.
If CIG do not try to do it, no other studio will do it.

And ? It will be SQ42 that will mark the birth (or death) of CIG in the market. As you said, for now they are not yet a game studio because no product released. But the studio is well in its tracks. Like it or not, CR will release SQ42 only when he think it can sustain the comparison with the solo campaign of GTA or, now, Starfield.
For the 10 years in the making, imagine Rockstar starting from 0 (10 guys, no building, no proprietary engine, etc) and deciding to release GTA 5. How many years do you think they need to release it if money is not a problem ?
CIG have the money and CR had decided to target directly an AAAA product. Not one product will be out before the first AAAA will be released by CIG.
This is a fantasy I'm afraid.

As long as it is "developed" on model it needs to have latest bells and whistles it will never release. Or when it is finally released it is seriously outdated and bad.
Real game developers make basic design, build on it, possibly adding some tech if feasible that has been released between start of process and release point. But always there is some point where developers make decision: This is it, we are going to release this now. Chris seemingly does observe what new stuff is in development or just released and decides "were are gonna need all that in the game". Thats never ending race you cannot and will not win. Usually it ends when developer runs out of other peoples money, or publisher finally says no more.

Because when you are playing with other peoples money in traditional case publishers money they do retain some controll. As they want some return on their money. SC pledger does not have ANY controll. And no quarantees that their money will ever lead to successfull game.

A "really good game" for me is a 9/10 rated game. I give that possibility a 10% chance.

Ever since backing at the Kickstarter, I've expected Sq42 to be somewhere between a 6/10 and 8/10 game, with the highest chance of it being the 7/10 middle road there.

It has a script written and directed by Chris Roberts...I don't think I need to qualify any opinion on whether I think it'll be good or not, history speaks for itself on that score. With the exception of the first Wing Commander game, every project (game or movie) that Chris Roberts has put his name to has ended up in multi-million dollar financial losses for the producers and investors involved in those projects...almost without exception.

Why on earth would you imagine Sqn 42 will be any different? The man behind the project has continually proven himself to be utterly bereft of a single, original idea or piece of game design for over 20 years. Sqn 42 is just Wing Commander (insert number here) with star citizen being the massively over budget Freelancer he never finished before he was removed by the game's producers and financiers for misappropriation of funds. He used $30m of game funding from Microsoft to make the ill fated Wing Commander movie... in case you needed reminding.

As a game concept, Sqn 404 is just a continuation of the same dated and tired 1990's idea (by strange coincidence, the only successful idea he's ever had) and a rehash of the one thing Chris Roberts has any spurious claim to fame for having a hand in... the Wing Commander games. It will be at best guess, an outdated interactive movie style of game (judging from what we've already seen of it), so out of touch with modern gaming trends it's almost dinosaurian in concept...lots of walky-talky bits interspersed with badly scripted action sequences.

Do you honestly think it'll be good? 🤷‍♂️

You're confusing "complex" with unplanned/designed.
There is nothing complex in SC, it's either T0 or just doesnt work. Someone who doesnt manage to get the core stuff working within 10 years won't be able to do anything complex in their lifetime. It's a bunch of retards talking big but they all have tiny pebble in their trouser. There is nothing to backup big claims. Just hot air and lies.

I absolutely love the idea that anything they are doing is complex or new. CryEngine 3.x came with the same terrain sculpting and pencil river tools they are using today, just with a new UI slapped on them. Same thing with their AI and NPC behavior branches.

Lol yeah CIG is the next Rockstar. GTA5 obj, NPc and physics reactions are something that SC would need another 4 to 6 years of solid, uninterrupted and planned work to accomplish. And that's a PS3 release!! A freaking playstation 3!! Hahahahahaha

For 'some reason', reading the recent run of posts, the 'parable' of the Spruce Goose sprang to mind.

Hughes H-4 Hercules, better known as the Spruce Goose and also the Grey Goose, was the world's largest plane. It was a massive undertaking, hugely engineered, the largest wooden plane ever made. It was built for a war that was already over by the time it arrived, and never found its place thereafter. It also only flew once, and then at only very low alititude and for only 26 seconds.

An interesting part of the story is that the aircraft took so long to design and build thanks to Howard Hughes’ perfectionism that the project's instigator and 'co-author' (shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser) dropped out.

Ah! Summer grasses!
All that remains
Of young warriors’ dreams
