How I think an Islands Animal Pack should be structured

I believe that the pack should have some sort of representation of some of the most famous islands and/or archipelagos in the world, such as:
  • The Galápogos
  • Tasmania
  • New Zealand
  • Madagascar
  • Caribbean
  • Florida Keys
  • Sri Lanka (maybe)
  • Iceland (maybe)
  • The Philippines
Just that list can provide plenty of animals.
  • From the Galápogos - Galápogos Fur Seal, Galápogos Sea Lion, and Galápogos Penguin
  • From Tasmania - Tasmanian Devil
  • From New Zealand - North Island Brown Kiwi
  • From Madagascar - Fossa and Corquel's Sifaka . . . and pretty much any other kind of lemur
  • From the Caribbean - Rhinoceros Iguana and Caribbean Flamingo
  • From the Florida Keys - Key Deer (An extremely endangered subspecies of White-Tailed Deer, but I understand that just going with the subspecies wouldn't be as appealing as waiting for the more general species of White-Tailed Deer eventually.)
That's all I can think of. If any of you can think of any more islands or animals, feel free to share.

Side note: if we had larger, non-walkthrough aviaries, I would hope to get a Philippine Eagle.

  • Galapagos - As much as I would like more Galapagos animals, none of these are in any zoo to my knowledge. Typically more common species will replace these as substitute animals to represent the species. Why not the Falklands for some penguins or south American fur seal
  • Tasmania - yeah Tasmanian devil is the only good option
  • New Zealand - again yeah kiwi is the prime animal to add here
  • Madagascar - fossa is the best option
  • Carribbean - nothing represents the Carribbean better than the iconic flamingo
  • Florida keys? Hmm personally I'd head to the British isles (maybe a bit bias here) and get the Scottish wildcat in since it's critically endangered aswell and fills the feline need for every dlc pack. A deer in an island pack would be pretty lackluster

Other islands could include - Cuba, Britain , Japan , Indonesia along other various southeast Asian islands, Falklands and other sub-Antarctic islands, Sri Lanka, and probably a few others

Ok, imma try to make an animal pack with 1 animal from each island:

  1. Tasmanian devil - Tasmania
  2. North Island brown kiwi - New Zealand
  3. Fossa - Madagascar
  4. American flamingo - Caribbean
  5. Southern rockhopper penguin - Falklands
  6. Japanese serow - Japan
  7. Scottish wildcat - British Isles
  8. King cobra (E) - Southeast Asia

Personally I feel some places are worth doubling up on, (Madagascar, New Zealand) but I'll attempt to do it without that!

1. Tasmanian Devil (Tasmania)
2. Kiwi sp. Or Kakapo (New Zealand)
3. Aye-eye, Indri or Fossa (Madagascar)
4. Marine Iguana (Galapogos)
5. Nene (Hawaii)
6. Sumatran Rhino (Sumatra)
7. Tanuki (Japan)

I'd think the Tasmanian Devil, a Kiwi and a Tree Kangaroo are quite probable, should this end up being the theme of a pack. So that's Tasmania, New Zealand and New Guinea represented. Fossa for Madagascar. Raccoon Dog for Japan. I'm going to go for something less requested for the others. Hawaiian Monk Seal, and really obscure...just to get something from the New World in, the Sable Island Horse, which also gives us a third equine...I did use google for that pick.

Wouldn't be unhappy with a Javan Rhino, Sumatran Tiger or a Gibbon from one of the SEA/Indonesian islands. I suspect we'll get a second gibbon at some point and that would cross that off the list. Or even the Little BLue Penguin, though I'd think a New Zealand representative should definitely be the Kiwi

Tuatara for the exhibit animal, again a New Zealand animal, but as an exhibit animal it would be a good second representative for New Zealand.

Personally I feel some places are worth doubling up on, (Madagascar, New Zealand)
I agree. New Zealand and Madagascar especially would be great, as you mentioned.

  • Madagascar - A 4th lemur (Coquerel's sifaka) and the fossa
  • New Zealand - North Island brown kiwi and tuatara (exhibit animal)

That's already a good chunk for a pack. Add in a Tassie, and we have a great roster for a standard scenery pack.

Standard: Islands pack
  1. Tasmanian devil
  2. North Island brown kiwi
  3. Fossa
  4. Coquerel's sifaka
  5. Tuatara (E)

But, I think Japan should earn a shot in a hypothetical Islands DLC

Everyone is forgetting the domestic cat from Japan's cat island

Actually, do zoo have domestic cats on the grounds? I'd assume yes for pest control.
Now, I know PZ doesn't have pests, so a domestic cat may not work, but....

Say, I have an idea. Thanks Cap
The Oregon zoo I was recreating has a cat house which takes in rescued cats from the city, other than that I've seen a couple cats in some European zoos but they aren't actually listed in the collection so they could be pest control

Zoos listed with domestic cats
  • Oregon zoo
  • Amarillo zoo
  • Beijing zoo has free range feral cats
  • Prague zoo (zoochat mentioned in 2016)
I thinks it mostly feral cats, supposed pest control - typically in Aviaries, and rescued cats

your island picks I agree with, gives new places some representation as opposed to just SEA.
Galapagos: I would like marine iguanas but I understand they are not kept in captivity due to their diet restrictions.
Tasmanian devil
NZ: NZ fur seal. another type of pinniped that isn’t exactly a seal or a sea lion representation
Caribbean: the American/Carribean flamingo or what ever you want to call it
Florida keys: hawksbill sea turtle
Japan: tanuki
New Guinea: tree kangaroo

Why not, though? It's many different islands from all over the world, so it'll have worldwide representation. Plus, we'd get a lot of highly requested animals
Maybe I should have said 'some of the islands' instead? Places like Tasmanian and Madagascar, they make plenty of sense... places like the Galapogos and the Florida Keys? Not so much...

For example, my current islands roster is:
Tasmanian Devil (Tasmania)
Tree Kangaroo (New Guinea)
Fossa (Madagascar)
Japanese Raccoon Dog (Japan)
Caribbean Flamingo (Cuba)
Little Blue Penguin (New Zealand)
Walrus (Various; includes Greenland and Svalbard)

Thinking about it, has anyone been to a zoo that represents the Florida keys using deer and stuff? I'm yet to visit Miami zoo but the various other zoos seem to like using Florida panther, black Bear, gators, manatee and various colorful birds to represent the diversity

I would definitley add Greenland to this list, which after all, is the biggest island. So my personal list would be:
  • Carribean/Galápagos: for this one I could imagine two different bird species which do occur in both regions - American flamingo and the brown pelican. I would actually prefer the pelican, as we don't have one yet and I can't really think of a pack where it could appear (wetlands or the region based packs would have been my bet).
  • Tasmania: this one is easy, as we already got the common wombat and the red-necked wallaby. Tasmanian devil for sure!
  • New Zealand: this isn't too difficult either, as I could definitley see a Kea in a mountain pack. So I'll go for the North Island brown kiwi.
  • New Guinea: there's a lot to choose from. But I would go with the most obvious choices- one of the tree kangaroo species.
  • Madagascar: A close call between Fossa and Coquerel's sifaka, but I would probably go with the fossa, as I could see the sifaka in a drylands pack.
  • Greenland: the last Arctic animal I'm missing - the (Greenland) Musk ox
  • Palawan: I'm always amazed by the fact that we don't have one bird from SEA, even though there are a lot of possibilities. I've chosen the Palawan peacock pheasant, as there's a big demand for smaller species and this one can frequently be found in walk-through aviaries/greenhouses and would also be out first Phillipines endemic. But this spot could also easily be filled by a Argus pheasant, a green peafowl or even one of the junglefowls.
  • Honshu: Japanese giant salamander, an Andrias is the last amphibian I'm missing, and as it's a species that's kept outside of Japan and does even breed, I think it would be a good addition.

This is my idea for an Islands Animal Pack:

1. Tasmanian devil - Probably the flagship species for this pack, endemic to the island of Tasmania.
2. North Island brown kiwi - Another much-wanted Oceanian species, representative of New Zealand.
3. Goodfellow's tree kangaroo - Probably the best and most-desired option to represent the island of New Guinea.
4. Fossa - Probably the most unique Madagascan option, and probably the one required to make a Madagascan zone in a zoo.
5. Rhinoceros iguana - A large ground-dwelling iguana that would be a good Caribbean representative, although Cuban crocodile and American flamingo are also good options.
6. Lowland anoa - The smallest of the wild cattle, endemic to the island of Sulawesi.
7. Mindanao bleeding-heart dove - This mid-sized pigeon, endemic to the Philippines, is almost entirely ground-dwelling, quite commonly kept and threatened in the wild.
Alternative: Welsh polecat - Surprisingly similar in size and shape to the Asian small-clawed otter. While the 'Scottish' wildcat is often given as a British representative, they are now thought to not be their own subspecies and rather just part of the more widespread European subspecies, while the Welsh polecat Mustela putorius anglia (also found in England and Scotland) is an endemic subspecies.

Exhibit. Because of the abundance of coral reefs around Southeast Asian islands, and the importance of terrestrial island ecosystems to the health of reefs, I figured an island pack could be the ideal place to add marine aquariums. I have chosen twelve species here, all from the Indo-Pacific and, more importantly, all twelve have been successfully bred in captivity.

The twelve species are divided up into four basic animation groups:
Animation style
Fish that spawn in association with an enrichment item*Ocellaris clownfish, Amphiprion ocellarisTiger-tail seahorse, Hippocampus comesBluestreak cleaner wrasse, Labroides dimidiatus
Fish that are restricted to the tank floorMandarinfish, Synchiropus splendidusRuby red dragonet, Synchiropus sycoraxSpotted garden eel, Heteroconger hassi
Fish that hover in the water, making only small movementsBanggai cardinalfish, Pterapogon kauderniAzure damselfish, Chrysiptera hemicyaneaGreen chromis, Chromis viridis
More active swimmers, making slow loops of the tankCopperband butterflyfish, Chelmon rostratusHarlequin filefish, Oxymonacanthus longirostrisFlame angelfish, Centropyge loricula

* Clownfish spawn with a sea anemone, seahorses with a patch of seagrass and cleaner wrasse with a flat coral that they hover over
