Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The thing is, I genuinely don't think he was lying when he said that Sqn 42 had been locked down and almost ready...but somewhere between gamescon and the end of 2016, something major happened. As of yet, I'm still only guessing the reasons behind it's disappearance and reappearance near the end of 2017. A total re-write of Sqn 42 or perhaps something to do with the Crytek legal case looming somewhere....I'm really only guessing here, but something happened and Sqn 42 had to be redone from the beginning. That part is fairly obvious from the standpoint of a long term backer 🤷‍♂️

Besides all that...a few thousand of us refunded shortly after that interview was filmed...enough of us that Ci~G were forced into re-writing the TOS to stop the mass exodus. Certain choice idiots were daft enough to buy back in just over a year later of course.

In for a penny, in for a pound as they say

Has LittleAnt played the "Ah, but they decided to redo all the missions" card yet? As if that makes it all ok.

Ooops. :D

The "something major happened" was Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare

I'm serious though...and as a star citizen fanboy...I'm fairly crap at it...but I genuinely believe that Sqn 42 was tabled for a Q4 2016/Q1 2017 release...but something happened...and something serious enough to force Ci~G to cease production and shelf it. Whatever it was in reality, I've no idea...and the idiot Roberts won't be telling either. But if you asked any serious backer back then...and judging by what we could see, we all thought the same 🤷‍♂️

Nah man. This is not his first rodeo. What happened is simply that he probably lied to keep hype and funding strong when he said that SQ42 was "in close down mode", that he had "all the content, the missions, the playthrough", and when he said that those were "all done and blocked in. We're finishing all these". By August, just 4 months before end of year, he was probably already fully aware of the SQ42 situation.

He also continued to sell SQ42 in CitizenCon, in October the same year. Answer the Call 2016 was still very much on. As the need to maintain hype and funding.

Much like he lied when he repeatedly said that the kickstarter promised scope would be ready by 2014 and then only a crappy, barely playable, Arena Commander module was released in that year.

Chris and CIG compared Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare to what was Squadron 42, and panicked.
Even after all my guessing since then...that certainly seems the most likely reason for the vanishment. Strange that I never thought of it until you mentioned it... I mean, story wise IW had Sqn42 beat hands down...graphically and gameplay wise too. If Chrissy boy had released the magnum opus back then, it would have been an 'also ran' ...his ego wouldn't stand that, not for a second.

Nope, I reckon @StuartGT has it nailed....just going from the experience of being a backer back then. Some of us really aren't that gullible, even though the idiot Roberts is a born liar and snake-oil salesman...but I still believe in saying that, he was geniune about the state of Sqn 42 back during that interview. Afterward...he had of course been forced into continuing the hype surrounding Sqn 42. It's not like he could tell us all that he'd pulled it because a Call of Duty game had snookered him 🤷‍♂️

That's like saying they needed something different to look at to find out what they done was just crap. And maybe it was and anything coming up would serve as an excuse to pull it and do all over again, nah, I don't buy it. There was a bit of talent there to recogise such stuff earlier.

You're assuming the idiot Roberts was ever living in our world instead of inside his own head in the first place...

Highly doubt the main reason for SQ42 not making it in 2016 was just CoD:IW.

By the way I checked and it was actually in October´s CitCon that Roberts stated SQ42 would not make it in 2016 in the end. CoD:IW was released in November. Plus there were already many videos about it even prior to GamesCom in August. Chris knew full well what was coming even before Gamescom.

Alas, Chris always mentioned that SQ42 was going to be as polished and good as anything out there, compared things with Naughty Dog products etc. If SQ42 was really practically finished and locked in, in such a great state as he said in August then he had nothing to fear. At most he would have delayed after Christmas to New Years to avoid the IW window. Especially after it flopped. So no, I doubt IW was the reason at all. The state of SQ42 was likely very far from what he said in August. He most likely just lied about it to maintain funds and hype.

You do have a point, a very good one...but like I said...I'm only guessing. It's certainly a fact that Sqn 42 was rebooted totally when Ci~G released the 2017 roadmap for it. I seriously doubt that Chrissy boy and his porkies were the reason behind that... 🤷‍♂️

If he had released the BDSSE back in 2016 as it was with IW having already been released...he would have been made to look more of an idiot than was already apparent. IW was a pretty good game with a solid single player campaign, still is pretty good even today. We all know that Sqn 42 will never be even close to it judging by what we've seen so far (and that's not much at all). It's even more humbling for the visionary himself having a rather averagely rated Call of Duty game that would be used by reviewers as an obvious benchmark.

Which will come out first?
  • Star Citizen 3.18 to live - coming soon
  • ED interim update - "latter end of January"
  • ED update 15 - "targeting April"
  • ED update 16 - "later in the year"
Who cares? The Last of Us releases on PC on March 3rd...Hogwarts Legacy in February...Starfield sometime before the end of the year. None of us will have any time or inclination for either of those perennial space dramas

I think it was simply a re do of what happened to Star Marine, or what happened to the initial game in 2014. He just could not deliver, be it for technical reasons, blockers of some kind, or last minute frack ups. And he was fully aware of that by August but likely decided to lie to maintain hype and funding.
