In addition to candidly confirming that they have not been really working in server meshing for quite a while (min 07:21) they also introduce the idea that Pyro will be in the game before meshing. Probably through a menu option or through a jump point animation or mini game. I am so glad they read this thread.

What we want to do of course is have multiple DGS [Dedicated Game Servers] per star system, but we're separating the actual Jump Gate stuff from the actual, uh, Server Meshing stuff, so that we get to the point so we can actually assure Pyro's delivery, and whilst we worry about the actual, uh, Server Meshing delivery. So we're actually, yeah, those are now from our perspective two different problems.

They think the work separating out the replication layer will at least allow that. (Handover of authority between two servers etc). So they can bodge another placeholder solution in the meantime 😁

5m - PES is persisting. That's great. That's behind us.

10m45s - 'Very early on' they'll separate the replication layer from the DGS. Key step to delivering Pyro. And then work on SM.

12m50 - We all have our views on how we get to 'Dynamic Server Meshing' [translation, they don't know / agree]

13m - We're getting into the cases we have to deal with. 'What happens if a player dies in a jump tunnel...'

It probably didnt, but the stuff that really needs attention is actually incredibly difficult to fix without breaking the rest of the game. So to show activity and progress they "rework" some things. Everything looks better after some new textures, an increase in polygon count and a new colour scheme! :)
Or more accurately, they need to have something for those 700 hundreds of artists to do while the core systems team spends days, even weeks, discussing how to design something that should've been completed by 2014.

Maybe it's such an unpleasant discussion they procrastinated until now.

The funniest thing about this latest Pyro bodge is that it's gonna have none of the server performance improvements that was supposed to arrive at the same time. It'll still be a server per solar system. So no extra headroom for stuff like, say, ship crew. Or PvE capital ship battles. Or herds of animals scudding about in the wilds ;)

Just more assets baby. Lots and lots more assets. Some of them ship shaped...

(Odds on Tony won't make much headway with his quantum backend either, which'd be one thing they could expand on with multiple locations. Because all the relevant engineers will still be stuck on 'Meshing'. Although there's always a chance they'll get something working. Then break it because it was built on placeholder bridging tech 😳)
