No Single Player offline Mode then?

No it was not promised. Nothing was promised. That fact that it was implied and David Braben used phrases like "there will be an offline mode" during kickstarter is enough to show a breach of trust. Whether it's a breach of contract is up to others to decide.

I agree that at the time he probably (and I can't speak for the man) thought it was viable. But the newsletter clearly states that that has now changed. Very unfortunate but hindsight is (probably) a wonderful thing.

Refund is not what these people really want. What they want is the single player option.
No, single player option isn't what these people want. Single player option is in the game anyway. What they want is OFFLINE option, with no need for constant/frequent connection to game servers. That being offline means also single player in this case is a given.

This is the simcity disaster all over again.

EA claimed it was not possible to do offline, yet people prooved them wrong by hacking the game.

I bet we will see hackers prooving wrong too that elite is perfectly playable in offline (if they can be bothered, as elite is quite a smaller market than sim city was and putting dirt in EA's eyes is a bigger sport than putting dirt in a new companys eyes).

Either way, this is just another failed promise by the frontier crew, and along with all the design decisions they are making that are counter to what I see as fun, I am starting to wonder why I ever backed their kickstarter project in the first place. I won't purchase any of their products in the future, that is for usre, given the shadiness they are putting on display with their actions.

Solo Online requires a fairly constant connection to play. Not a just authenticate and go offline thing. It needs to access the galaxy API to get prices, system info, transactions, etc and many many other things.
.
I guess that's the crux of the matter, people with poor internet connections aren't going to be able to play are they or will have a poor experience? Sorry to say but Frontier have really messed up with this announcement so close to the full release. It's created a massive amount of negative publicity and general bad feeling.

Sorry, I not sure how that punishes anybody? If they paid for beta access (and used it) why should they get that back just because they decided to not get the final game? The cost of the final game is (right now £40) so it's fair they should get that back.
-
If I order a 3 course meal, eat the first two courses but decide that they don't have the one desert that I could eat (the others having dairy). Should I get the whole meal refunded or just the cost of the desert?

You should have known that the three course is beta...
Is that what you're trying to say here?

From the Kickstarter FAQ:

I can live with that my Galaxy will be static and that I can not sync with anyone else.
But this FAQ point was what made me back this project.
I have been severely burned in the past by games that force someone to get online even if only once in a while. If they do not make this game playable singleplayer only, I would consider this a failed project and I would want my money back!

This was a clear and promised feature.

Now, the statement from the newsletter still leaves some loopholes open for interpretation, so I won't say something like "fraud".
Yet.

I planned to join Beta, but now I hesitate.
I dont want to spend 60 Euros for a game that I can not play for a long time.
I play the original Frontier 2 since 1995 till today (with Dos Box).

In addition I have a poor internet connection.
What means connect the server "from time to time"?
When I have to spend a hour or two to get the newest galaxy or a patch via downoad, that is not a problem.
If my connection failed I can continue to play without update.
But this won't work every miute or every hour!

So, can I have every stuff I need to play the game on my compter (galaxy, savegames, ...)?
Will say can I still play when my internet connection is broken or the server is closed?

Is it possible that I can get a answer fom Frontier Development clearing my questions in time? (beta on 22th Nov)?

I would never back this game, if I knew that the moment they turn off their servers, they turn off the game.

The same could be said of Everquest (launched 1999). It's your decision, rightly so, but to me it seems odd to base it on something that you can't possibly know.

Sorry, but that's simply not true. People are playing solo with close to dialup level data exchange. I know at least several people who play on regular basis on shady connections. Solo online is really usable for majority of people.

From the 28th country in this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Internet_connection_speeds list, having tested a few times Solo mode - typically when my wife was preparing the groceries cart or when my daughter was trying to watch some Netflix cartoon - I can confirm this: any loss of connection means you're booted out of the game. This is far from being an acceptable alternative to an offline mode.

Since there is no way of knowing how this affair affects Frontier and their income, we can't even predict for how long they would be able, or interested to maintain the servers. (I am not interested in white knight's nonsense)

So I am leaning to the possibility of requesting a refund too.

It's stupid, but Frontier doesn't give me much choice here. I would never back this game, if I knew that the moment they turn off their servers, they turn off the game.

Ohhh, there's easy way to know....some few thousand people will try to get refund. Few hundred will get it.

and ED has always been advertised as MMO game.

What are the main features of "Elite: Dangerous"?
Note: The current beta isn't feature complete yet.
An immersive, evolving galaxy with dynamic society, economy and stories, allowing pilots to join each other and together change story of the Milky Way.
Pilots will be breaking blockades, battling pirates, attacking enemy positions and installations, and more, leaving their mark whatever they go.
All actions, be it mass-multiplayer or singleplayer will change history of human kind.
For those who want to play in their own galaxy offline single player will also be available.

Someone should edit the wiki before more people buy it . . .

Stop reading the kickstarter faq from years ago please.

Read the system requirements and the latest press releases for the little information we know about what the release looks like.

You need a persistent internet connection to play. It doesn't have to be super quick but it can't drop out otherwise the game will kick you out.

Oh absolutely, you dont want to be playing E:D over a shared connection.

No, it isn't.

EA claimed it was not possible to do offline, yet people prooved them wrong by hacking the game.

Yeah, because Simcity was single player game who used online component to have meta game with your neighborhood cities. ED is basically MMO by structure - everything is on servers. Everything.

I bet we will see hackers prooving wrong too that elite is perfectly playable in offline (if they can be bothered, as elite is quite a smaller market than sim city was and putting dirt in EA's eyes is a bigger sport than putting dirt in a new companys eyes).

No we won't :)

Shadiness? They couldn't get feature to work. Where's shadiness in that?

IMO there are 2 things which should be done.... . one of them NEEDS to be done IMO.

1) a uturn saying OK solo is a lot of work and won't make it on release but will be added latter. I think this would be a nice compromise without delaying the game.

2) but this NEEDS to be done. A PROMISE from all at FD that IF/when FD choose to stop supporting the game and turn off the server they won't do what so many online games have gone before and screw us all, but that they WILL release all data to allow the community to keep it alive.

No one plans for failure but by putting saftynets in place will make customers happier and more likely to pay IMO. Sadly this won't help those with no solid internet though.
