Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I know that was tongue in cheek but... I mean, if we go that route then no game, probably with only a handful of exceptions, escapes that logic. Most games exaggerate or take liberties in their promotional material in one way or another. Here the issue is that SC´s is likely orders of magnitude out of whack when compared with most games out there, up to and including not completely unreasonable considerations for potential fraud.
Best way I can present my argument is to do a compare and contrast:

One of these trailers is filmed using 100% actual gameplay, the other is a movie. Now I will grant you that Frontier has gotten a little bit better over the years, integrating gameplay footage into their thematic trailers (Odyssey probably being the most realistic of their trailers), but still.

I also accept that games like ESO have trailers are literal "no doubt about it" movies rather than gameplay. The difference between ESO and the SC and ED trailers is that there is no confusion that ESO trailers are not gameplay. Compare to Elite / SC trailers, and even sticking an itty-bitty "not gameplay footage" watermark on them, it's easy to be persuaded that they at least are representative of the gameplay, because of the way they are presented using actual in-game assets and artistic style.

I always found the following video entertaining, if perhaps a bit misleading.

I read the punchline first, then waited patiently for gameplay from X4 Foundations and Space Engineers. Then I watched the ad, and all I saw were the usual lies from CIG.
But that's the point, the advert IS for gameplay from X4 Foundations and Space Engineers! Granted, it's the fantasy movie version verses actual gameplay, but I'm making the point that if you want to be part of a massive fleet battle, you can do that now in X4 Foundations, and if you want to go around cutting up the wrecks of other ships for loot, you can do that now in Space Engineers. CiG's lies are X4 and SE's truths 😜

I thought I'd post my experience of Star Citizen here, for anyone else thinking of trying it.

I backed Star Citizen back in kick starter and have followed it all the way along, trying it out at various points of development. I actually spent a good while playing it and reporting issues back in 2018, so much so that I got an invitation into the Evocati. I stopped playing it shortly after that though as reporting issues seemed to be the main form of gameplay.

I went back to try it out again just over a week ago. I have a lot of time to play games and I spent a long weekend playing. It took me about 40 hours to figure out and setup my controls. After practicing in Arena Commander and Star Marine I also made my way into the PU, tried out the missions and bounty hunting, etc.

After my time playing Star Citizen I came to these conclusions:

There are things in Star Citizen that I wish were in Elite:
The gorgeous graphics!
The size of the planets.
The variety of planetary environments.
The atmosphere and weather on planets.
Walking around ships.
Ship to ship boarding.
Having your own hangar that is personalised.
Being able to display the things you collect in your hangar and ships.
Organised Ship and Buggy Racing!
Greater variety of ships.
Better looking ships.
Role specific ships and modules.
Greater variety of FPS weapons.
Better FPS Weapons.
Better ground vehicles.
EVA.
Regular updates on any development with actual information.

There are also things in Elite that I wish were in Star Citizen:
Better FPS.
Playable game loops.
Progression.
Less bugs.
Less crashes.
Less downtime between action.
Less complicated everything.
Faster gameplay.
Faster quantum/jumping.
Faster planetary approach/exit.
Better maps.
Easier navigation.
Easier ship weapon controls.
Much better key bind system.
Key binds that actually work and don't reset themselves.
Faster on foot movement.
Flying through the air when on foot.
Private Groups.

Hopefully that sums up my thoughts on how the two games compare for me right now.

There are a few major issues that are outright stopping me from switching to Star Citizen, mainly the low FPS (I get around 60fps but it still seems jittery) and stuttering graphics that are causing eye ache for me, and a combination of other annoyances.

The other annoyances include setting key binds only for Star Citizen to constantly change them back for you, the huge wait times to get anywhere, the constant crashing, losing your things and having to start over having now wasted a couple of hours. Oh and it taking AGES to go anywhere and do anything.

There is lots that I like about Star Citizen but there are too many BIG downsides for me to be able to play it full time, so, for now, I will be sticking with Elite Dangerous.

Oi, Logan - a quick scan of your channel shows quite a number of content. Did you make some videos that is more on the story-telling side?

Best way I can present my argument is to do a compare and contrast:
The problem for me is that Frontier, for example, in 10 years have released about 10 trailers; 1 cool (and unrealistic, let's not fool ourselves) for each major release (base game, Horizons, Odyssey, console release, etc...), and the occasional short film of a major update (Guardians, Thargoids, Engineers, etc...).

The usual in a videogame.

And you have linked as an example the ED launch trailer; from 8 years ago... from the initial release... of course, they will have to make it interesting at first.

CIG with the trailers is sickening; a cool trailer with every patch, with every ship, with every citizencon, with every IAE, with every in-game event (the 3 they have), almost with every ATV/ISC program... because it's their way to sell you their continuous excellence.

During an IAE they come out at least 10 super cool mega fantastic trailers... because they want to sell you the ships.

And they all make it clear that SC is awesome and has superb AI.

Because of course, they have money to spare... and the people who make trailers you can't put them to develop core mechanics... can't you?

Movie based trailers, not related to in game footage, are used widely across the industry. Either way the vast majority of Elite trailers since launch are mostly pretty much gameplay footage, with a few exceptions here and there, like that one you mentioned or some of the sequences where commanders are shown close up chatting. And we can merrily argue for a while about which ones are closer or further from actual game play.

But movie based trailers is not the issue here really, at least not even the main issue with regards to Star Citizen. Heh, if only.

No, the issue with SC promotion in general, movie based or not, is that it has been selling a product(s) for over 10+ years based on constant and repetitive promotions of undelivered content and features. They have been constantly cashing in thanks to hype selling very specific content only to repeatedly delay or cancel until further notice. Plenty of exemples, here just a few:

Tons more exemples from where those came from. CIG´s whole business model is essentially based on getting money through constant hype based promotional misrepresentations, without having even gold released a single product. And what is there is majorly and fundamentally broken. Some people call that a scam, others simply fraud.

Either way orders of magnitude worst than just "movie based" trailers.

I made a cinematic video of Thargoid Hunting if that counts?

Cinematic, screenshot artistry, voiced acting - I guess the line between telling the nollocks and artistic freedom is a fine one but I like a good piece of art like everyone else.
That said I think there is a number of people doing their artistic work with Star Citizen. Some use the jank for comedic effect, some create reels with narrative purpose. It's just that this is gladly used to misrepresent the project.

For what it's worth, my initial joke was that this CiG trailer does a great job at advertising the gameplay found (not promised, but currently available) in X4 and Space Engineers. I know, because I'm watching the "very clearly a movie" and thinking, "Hey, I've done that in SE!" and "Hey, I've been in a battle just like that in X4!"

I would say that the "other" game is still a good game if you start now as a new player and wasn't a part of the kick starter , CIG just pulled all the stuff out of their smoke pipe and many of us (including this old fool) felt for it.

back when i was still gobbling down the kool-aid I bought ships after each trailer, however when the reality finally kicked in I filed for a refund in 2014 and got all 3k USD back, never looked back, I was then banned and locked out for good.

What's your thought on the prospect of Star Citizen's development? Where do you see it going?

Why the ban? It's not like a multi-million dollar company would be bitter after a measly $3,000 refund.

You should really reconsider my dear Lysan!

With so much progress made, and release right around the corner, now is the perfect time to spend at least $6K and know you are backing the right game.
not sure they will let me buy it again ;)

Don't know they just did....
