Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More

It can be both. If Frontier end up deciding "no more updates" then the Thargoid War as-is will still carry on indefinitely (and on the current balance reach a stalemate position at roughly the current size) with the Thargoids making moves according to the current strategy. It won't be novel but it will provide a permanent semi-dynamic battlefront for people who like fighting Thargoids.

Equally, there are several updates Frontier might intend to make that couldn't be put in place for the start of U14 - the ability to repel Maelstroms and the Thargoids to add (or reposition) them has been hinted at in Galnet, for example - and it would likely be a more strategically interesting war with those updates.
Might be new and deadlier Thargoid ships to satisfy the "new ships new ships" wailers.

you did not understand the phrase, it does not mean what you think. I see that you are a bad negotiator.

Another one who didn't understand 🤦‍♂️ ... you are very bad negotiators.

Oh please, Enlightened One, explain to us lowly plebeians the true meaning of this decrepit and oft-refuted platitude.

this is the way
The customer is always, always right... Anyone who doesn't understand this maxim has no business idea.
LOL. You sweet summer child.

I used to work in a café where the motto was "The customer can f off". I once threw someone out for asking for a stupid cocktail. We did pretty well.

large companies understood this maxim,

When Coca-Cola was sold to thousands of people, those who didn't like it showed up because it had too much sugar.
Coca-Cola understood that it had to sell its product without sugar, and it filled that empty space with dissatisfied customers, and tripled its sales.

In the world of games, Word of Warcraft created the race-classes with a defined aesthetic to encompass the taste of almost all the urban tribes of the time. (metal, hippie, rolera, gothic, Asian, etc) and always the guide of their updates had to do with what the public asked for.

"The customer is always right" means that if the public asks you for pizza, you "sell" them pizza and if the public asks for sushi, then you sell them Sushi. There is the money.

If it rains, you sell umbrellas, if the sun comes out, you sell sunshade.

That isn't what that phrase means, though. You're talking about product and market research, which is something completely different. "The Customer is Always Right" is in regards to the customer service industry.

This
is what that phrase looks like.

Page1_v2.jpg

"The customer is always right" means that you're expected to return a 40 year old and obviously broken vacuum, even though it obviously wasn't bought at your store. "The customer is always right" means that you're expected to provide a hamburger for a customer's kid, even though you're a waitress at a seafood restaurant. "The customer is always right" means you're expected to spend four hours trying to get a customer's $20 prepaid phone to work, despite being discount retailer.

Lots of grasping at straws here. Let's just make it simple.

On a macro scale, "customer is always right" works because you produce what the market demands.

On a micro scale, "customer is always right" doesn't work because people are Richards.

There, everyone is happy now (I hope).

That story at the start of the article just rings so true for so many posters on this forum. They buy ED. Then they come in and demand long list of changes that basically make ED a different game. Just fly another airline.

Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More
Greetings Commanders,

We trust that you have been enjoying Update 14 and all the action the Thargoid War is bringing to the bubble. Amidst everything going on, we are taking a moment to update you on our upcoming plans.

Update 15
Update 15 is set to build upon the narrative and unlock the next major stage of the Thargoid War. This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react. To allow the necessary time for development and ensure the update meets expectations, Update 15 will release in May. An exact date will be confirmed closer to the time.

Major Feature Rework
Last year we announced a major update that would rework a long standing feature. This is still being investigated, however a number of changes (not least the Thargoid War itself) have required our attention as a priority. We will share details of this investigation and our plans towards the end of this year.

Player Made Factions: Applications Closing
Player Made Factions have played a key role in expressing your will over the shape of the bubble. This goal is at the heart of our plans for Elite and reflected in the Thargoid War. Our focus is now turning to investigate how upcoming systems will allow every player and player group to have a meaningful impact on the galaxy’s landscape. This means we will be closing applications for PMFs, however we will process any remaining applications.

Console Profile Transfer Portal: Returning Next Month
The introduction of Live and Legacy modes required us to pause the Console Profile Transfer Portal in November last year. However, we’re now ready to begin processing further requests and will re-open the portal in April. We are pleased to announce that this is a far more complete process than we anticipated. We look forward to more console Commanders joining us on PC, especially to enjoy the features offered by Odyssey. To see which elements of your console profile will be transferred, see our forum post.

Live Mode as the Default Download
In addition to the above, we will be making the Live version of Elite the default download. This will encourage new players to try the main version of Elite with access to future updates while keeping Legacy as an optional alternative. Implementing this change will cause an update to appear for all Steam users, and Legacy players will need to re-download that version to continue playing, existing Live players will not require an update. This will have no effect on your save files, so if Legacy is your preferred mode, you can continue playing normally once it is re-downloaded.

While the above announcements outline several major plans for the upcoming year, further announcements will be made in the upcoming weeks and months. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below!

I am relatively happy. Missing a specific PS4 PMF though, that did not really make it to build a meaningful beachhead in the PC realm, the more because it was hit extremely hard by the Thargoid invasion. The corresponding Squad feature appears to be broken too in this case. It is what it is now, but please try to avoid this kind of social life disruption in the future, the vibes were a bit much to process. As to the feature overhaul: I can't miss what I do not know, so, to be honest, I really wonder why this mystery needs to be discussed. "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent." (Wittgenstein) - I believe that relates to healthy communication. It is no surprise to find some salt in the comments as reaction to perceived lack of attitude, which is obviously a cause for alienation. That is not exactly the way to the respectful conversation I am sincerely wishing for.

you don't need to want to change things to be salty about the current and future state of elite.

fdev hasn't done themselves any favors for years in not fixing popular issues, not delivering updates without previously identified regressions, shuttering community content, misleading or lack of communication of paid content, taking away functionality more and more frequently than adding it.

that's not even touching on the whole untapped community wants and desires to change or add to elite.

i wouldn't worry too much about the new players buying elite and being excited about the potential that seems right there for the taking and coming on the forum to share. it doesn't take long for that excitement to be killed off and for them to be told that such dreams are actually wrong.. not the incompetence or unwillingness of the studio to deliver (or let the customers do the delivering) what customers want

However, this comes with a caveat:
Yes - very much so, I think. Features which work absolutely brilliantly in one game can just be annoying in another. Tetris had a great implementation of limited inventory space under a time limit which was fun - and made it the best-selling game for decades. That doesn't mean it would be good for Elite Dangerous to do that for the materials screen.

(I keep a vague eye on Dual Universe in that it seems to be the anti-Elite-Dangerous and I'm curious if that route works better: all the features like ship interiors, base-building, paid subscription, open only, surface mining, player economy, built on a commercially-available engine, new ships, etc. that people keep saying should be in Elite Dangerous ; very few of the features ED already has beyond "you can fly a spaceship and it can have guns and cargo space". Same complaints about the devs, though.)

Apparently Fdev should have included hand-spinners some years ago because that's what the market wanted at that time. They could have sold them through the ARX store and have 100% happy customers.
Alas, Fdev is dedicated to engineer a complex product including several layers of software, develop a deep lore and nurture Elite since a decade with hand-crafted stories and events at near zero cost for their customers. But said customers wanted hand-spinners, while they for some reasons only they can understand kept playing Elite, why didn't Fdev made hand-spinners instead of Elite.
It's beyond me, probably.
I hope the major feature rework is charging money yearly to play Elite, so we can get rid of the hand-spinner team and properly fund Odyssey for the future releases.

There's change and then there's delusion. The changes demanded by some are the equivalent of going to a Cajun restaurant and then demanding they change their entire menu so it becomes a Italian pizzeria. They don't want change, they wanted an entirely different cuisine.
But why the constant focus on these "some"? There has been plenty of reasonable feedback over the years. Just because bad feedback exists, doesn't mean all feedback is bad.

What constant focus? I just commented on the fact that the story in the linked article rang true for me. Blame the guy that posted the most excellent, insightful and accurate article. ;)

'bout the only thing I constantly focus on is how much I hate PMFs. You wanna call me on that, then fair play. :p

I don’t mind the Feature Rework delay, I’m experiencing and expecting them with just about every avenue in life post Covid and seems the ‘new norm’, I feel for those under extreme pressure and suffering low staffing right now.

That being said, is it worth hanging on for a vague feature rework, of which we have absolutely no idea what is going to be reworked besides ‘potential hints’ in GalNet etc.

If we had some inkling of what it is, be it PowerPlay, Engineering, Exploration, Combat, Mining, Thargoid or such, it would, at least in my eyes, give more incentive to remain and stick around towards the end of 2023, which is rather a long way away.

There’s nothing to say that this element might even get cancelled completely before, or at year end mind you.

o7 - Sorry for the ‘Doom & Gloom’ return.

I find it interesting that there's an update that Frontier have said is one of the biggest ever coming to the game due this month in May, further delays notwithstanding, and the entire focus of the thread is on the 'feature rework' delay. Not getting at you specifically, and I apologize if it comes across that way. I agree with your point about the 'post covid norm' aspect, among other current goings on. It's been challenging everywhere with supply chain issues etc., but how your post completely overlooked Update 15, quite likely unintentionally, made me think of this.

Edited for less late night innacuracy...
