The Buckyball Racing Club presents: The Empire Hustle 8th - 16th April 3309 (Swift Sixteen Championship, Race 1)

Well, it turns out that I didn't manage to beat my run from last night. Many failed attempts were made, but my SC approaches are very rusty - that's what I get for flying a Type-9 most of the time, no 4 second corkscrews in that thing! I need to get practicing before the next round.

My last run (where every approach went wrong) would have been an improvement, but probably still just above 18 minutes, but I'll never know because I hit a pylon while heading back to the front of Agnews` Folly.

That was because I ignored Shaye's advice and tried to swap an 'ok' landing pad for a great one, instead of being happy it wasn't a rubbish pad and concentrating on boosting around the station safely (Raiko's Folly).

I didn't manage any regulation runs, but I've had a great weekend. :)

It's great to have Buckyball racing back again. Thanks for a great event Sulu, I'll submit my run first thing in the morning.

Great race everyone! And Many MANY thanks to Sulu for hosting and working tirelessly to validate runs and produce the results! It's one hell of a race this.!!

Commander Homborger's blog should be finished by tomorrow, I'm just off on a gentle run around the course to get screenshots.

What a fantastic race to start this year's championship - thanks so much to Sulu for hosting this, coping so well with the huge number of submissions that he received and keeping us regularly updated about the current leaderbard situation. Very much looking forward to the final results.

I'm going to upload the video of my 25:08 Cobra run (never did manage to beat that damn 25 minute barrier) later today but in the meantime I thought I'd share my route and bookmarks in case anyone was curious.

So basically that gave me 2 jumps to Jumuzgo, 2 jumps to Aymifa, 1 jump to Fawaol, and then (according to the route plotter) 3 jumps to LHS 1380. However, having not refulled up to this point, the low weight of the ship's remaining fuel meant I could actually do this in just 2 jumps by manually targetting LHS 1380 from Ceti Sector MX-T B3-2, a 25.42ly jump.

A quick refuel at Gurevich Orbital and then 3 more jumps from there back to Vequess made for a total of 10 jumps.

For the Imperial Courier things were a lot simpler as it was possible to come up with a route involving just 1 jump between each target system. Rather than reshuffle my bookmarks for that I just used bobbleheads to remind myself of this route.

I went the other way to get the tricky jump done sooner.
(entries still to be verified)

Massive thanks Sulu, only had a chance to get on during the last evening but this is absolutely my favourite type of race, really enjoyed it and bumping into Epaphus and Tobias on runs.

Also, I had no idea how busy it's been. Massive kudos for dealing with that.

Intent to race. Not sure about which ships yet - although the Imperial Driftship Cutter might prove a challenge without the ADC.

Race preparation...

ah, sure. Here:

So, that's the preparation done.
Thank you so much for posting this Ashnak, saved me a load of time last night and let me get on with racing.

I’d also like to add my thanks and praise for Commander Sulu for hosting this race.

Here's some of the highlights from the last couple nights of racing...

I should’ve looked harder when it came to trimming hops, it seems. Still, my first couple routes were all 12 hops, so I was quite happy to reduce that down to 11. My prep work was marred with numerous cut and paste errors. I really should see if I can develop a less error prone system for the next race.

To be honest I started out thinking 12 was good (iirc the route suggested by D2EA's 3rd party route planner was 13). Then for some reason I can't remember⁽*¹⁾ I stumbled across the 11-jump route while visually inspecting and playing with the route in the galaxy map. For several days I then thought that was the best until I just happened to notice that there seemed to be wastage in the 3 jumps from Fawaol to LHS 1380. I could very easily have sat on the 11 jump route for the whole week! I guess the lesson is - if you're going to be spending days throwing everything you've got at a race in order to try and shave seconds off your time ... make DAMN sure you have the best route possible before you start!

(*1) - I remember now, I noticed that I was literally flying through Aymifa on my route between two others and thought, hang on, surely it would make more sense to stop there now rather than come back to it later.

Interesting, I went the other way around. Turned out to be handy for Ceti Sector MX-T B3-2 as I was able to plot to Fawaol, then manually target Ceti Sector MX-T B3-2 while turning around the in station. Saved some time in Ceti Sector MX-T B3-2 as all I had to do was flick the Galmap up for it to reroute to Fawaol.

Late last night I was able to improve my times, can't wait to see how the final leader board came out :)

Oh nice. Damn ... I probably could have beaten the 25 minute barrier if I'd reversed the route. Sometimes in Buckyball you get stuck into a groove and just continue to try and do what you're doing faster rather than try something else.

I did same thing when looking for a new route, planned it out based on the distance between the stops. Got ready to set off plotted to Fawaol and then wondered why I was jumping to Aymifa 😂

The Empire Hustle
Final Results

First and foremost, I must begin by thanking everyone who took part. Your responses and enthusiasm were inspiring to say the least.

We do these races to bring a bit of fun & mayhem to the Elite world. We want anyone who comes along to feel part of something without pressure or judgement. We may “rib” each other sometimes but the Buckyball community is all about enjoyment and celebrating the (often) suicidal pilots who take part. Coming last in these races is no shame either as they are genuinely challenging and designed to test and hone your skills as well as just having a scream.

We have had many grizzled veterans take part of course, plus a really good contingent of new pilots. It is you who give us hope for future races and we welcome you all. We hope that this taster race has given you the skills and enthusiasm to take part in the rest of the 7 races scheduled for this championship, The Magic 8 Ball 2 – Sweet Sixteen event.
The next race is 6th May, “The Thargoid Structure Scramble 2”, and is being hosted by our esteemed Alec Turner. We hope to see you all there as this one is hilarious.

Regulation Class
The Cobra continues to be an absolute stalwart ship. It is not fast but it flies really well, and every race we run it seems to just smile and get on with it. What a hero. The entire regulation class was tight from the word go with only 2 minutes between 1st place and 11th. Imagine that?
Oh and for those who are interested, it could complete the course in 10 jumps, yes 10!

Unlimited Classes
In the unlimited class every single ship except the IEagle could do this in just five jumps (48.09ly). It became clear very early on that the absolute monster for this would be the Imperial Courier with its high jump and speed. To my surprise quite a few people decided to run the Cutter round as well. This did cause some problems as large buildings flying through the “mailslot” at high speed tend to break things. We aim to please however. The least popular choice was the Imperial Clipper, which actually turns out to be pretty dammed quick for its size and very nice to fly.

Overall, we had 137 entries from some 40 different commanders which is a superb start for the season. Keep it up.
It has been a delight running this first race of the season and I am looking forward to the rest and a breather.

Now for the official positions for the podium heroes-

Regulation
1st - Sgurr 24.43
2nd - Ozric 24.52
3rd - Alec Turner 25.08

UnlimIted
1st - Shaye Blackwood Duke 16.01 ICourier
2nd - Bruski Duke 16.27 ICourier
3RD - Sgurr Baron 16.50 IEagle

It is interesting to note that not a single Empire king featured a pole position, obviously they are generally too important to do this kind of thing!

Finally, a few words for the championship organizer Commander Bruski.

We would like to take a moment to share our thoughts with you. The Buckyball crew send our regards and support in what is a very difficult time. We are here for you sir.

Wow!

And this is just race #1 of the championship!! I'm not sure my nerves can stand much more at this rate.

Massive congratulations to all the winners (Shaye and Bruski of course, Sgurr and Ozric for kicking in that 25 minute barrier for me, Epaphus for being so damn close, dean36963 for making me sweat every single day despite being relatively new to Buckyball(?), and really just everyone for getting this off to such an epic start).
Huge thanks (again) to Sulu for running this so brilliantly despite the daunting attendance figures, you've made me genuinely nervous about following in your footsteps next month (there's a turnaround eh?).

Speaking of which, the next race (a variation on 3307's "Thargoid Structure Scramble") will be running from the 6th to the 14th May and will be taking place out in the Pleiades. I'm out there now scouting to pin down exact details (in truth, after what Sulu's been saying, I'm mostly trying to cut down the number of screenshots that I'm going to have to look at!) but hang on to your regulation Cobra's and as for the choice of unlimited class ships, I think it'll be pretty much ... errr ... unlimited!
