Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

The main reason I don't do open is because I'm, basically, an uncociable git. That, and I'm just not geared to social play - can't voice chat; don't have a mic and find text chat too slow.
Lol but just to address one bit of that: I have never had voice comms in game from someone outside the squadron. Ever. Rare for someone to text message but if they do it's easily ignored. It adds some realism and unpredictability for me, but doesn't bring with it a need to interact (I have some issues surrounding shyness). But literally have never spoken to someone I don't know in game.

That is fair enough but as I don’t play the BGS as a game it isn’t a consideration for my play mode choices.

Since I got my new laptop last year and can run at decent framerates I have been playing in Open a lot more.
But finding someone in a gank boat at Hutton Orbital shooting ships taking part in the Christmas giveaway after they have finished a 90+ minute cruise didn’t make me all that much more enthusiastic about open play and the people who play there.
I make choices about open Vs solo to have a realistic game play experience. A player destroying another for no reason other than to see an explosion is not realistic. Another player role playing a pirate is game play I am happy to engage in.

That would have cheesed me off no end. Especially if I was new to the game. I sincerely hope said ganker encountered a large amount of karma.

I remember dropping into open a bit early on - then i made the mistake (unknown to me at the time) of returning to JM after a fairly long exploration trip in my old python... only to be interdicted and torn to shreds by some little another player in a kill-'em-all warship build - they didn't even bother to ask if i wanted to PVP first, which is really rude imo :p

Thus i've played the vast majority of my ~5000hrs in solo or group with friends... :)

*when the "open play" mode of a game has been repeatedly described by players from the same community as "legitimised cyber-bullying", isn't it time its devs really did do something about it...? :|

People have been crowing about this for years and Frontier doesn't seem interested in stopping it. It's happened to me several times, most recently right after I finished engineering my Anaconda. I took it on a shake down trip and had a guy interdict me 100Ly from Colonia and destroyed me in 2 shots and I have bi-weave shields.

I was pretty upset, came here and started complaining about the guy who did it and some members came down on me for witch hunting I think they called it. So, I get ganked, complain about it using the commanders name and was asked not to do that.

Yeah, reports about gankers reached me before I started playing, which fueled my decision to stick to solo until I know how things roll.
After several hours playing, I now know that in case of an interdiction, the interdicted ship is in a severe disadvantage, no matter how fast you are. Oddly enough, I have encountered some NPC gankers. Interdicted my out of the black (no messages) and started shooting before I knew what was going on. I somehow managed to get away, slightly scorched but generally in one piece.
One thing I noticed with interdictions is that, against NPCs, it is actually best to try to evade the interdiction, as, unless you have a trip of 1000k LS to your destination, you usually won't hear from that interdictor again until after you landed at your destination (given they are still after you).

I'm all done with this place, time to make like horse s~*t and hit the trail.

I'm sure everyone is getting tired of these shots, but it's so picturesque. ;)

Wow! Stratum Tectonicas 19,010,800!
And if you found that on a first footfall planet the bonus is four times that.

Just found one of its cousins that will get me just over 16 million with the first discovery bonus to go on top of that. The next world I have found but not yet mapped has 5 bio signs but isn’t likely to match that price for all of them combined.
