General / Off-Topic The Covid vaccine must be mandatory ?

It's a thing in the same way that your skull is still a thing when you ride a bike directly into the path of an oncoming car. You are still vastly better off with a helmet on.

I'm reminded of the 'survivability onion', of referenced in naval and armored warfare discussions:

An analog for the middle parts for viral infection might be 'don't be exposed, don't be infected, don't become symptomatic, don't (need to) be hospitalized'.

The idea that voluntarily omitting a low-cost protection for multiple layers is some how going to be wise is a truly bizarre line of thinking.

Imagine being so taken in by propaganda that you actually think natural immunity is no longer a thing. Then you call others stupid because you are such nice people in here.

Imagine being so taken in by propaganda that one actually believes it's possible that one's critics are somehow ignorant of the relevant aspects of natural immunity.

Virtually every argument against vaccination I've encountered in this thread relies either on objectively counter-factual statements (e.g. some permutation of 'these vaccines are not safe and/or effective'), or obtuse strawmen implying that some other mitigation, defense, or treatment has been overlooked by vaccination advocates. These arguments appear to be far more 'propaganda' driven than the actual arguments for vaccination.

Anyway, natural herd immunity as a strategy would have been flawed even if it were possible to regulate exposure rates sufficiently to avoid undue pressure on health services (it's not, because the same ignoramuses that take issue with vaccination have considerable overlap with those who are reckless about disease in general) and even if the optimistic presumption that immunity would be long lasting (it's not).

As for people...there are those who are more of a threat to others and those who are less of a threat to others. Neither of these have much of any relation to their pretensions of nicety.

Most unsurprising study results ever:
After adjustment for age, sex, and ethnicity, study members with a lower baseline cognition score were markedly more likely to be vaccine hesitant (odds ratio per standard deviation lower score in cognition; 95% confidence interval: 1.76; 1.62, 1.90)

There was a linear association for vaccine hesitancy across the full range of cognition scores (p for trend: p<0.0001).

Vaccine hesitancy is found to be inversely proportional to brain function. Not a shock to anybody reading this thread, as the evidence for it and the specific lesion has already been documented. It's a trope that nutty people think they are Napoleon, which is basically derepression of self importance. The same locus that false-tags lies does the repression: sort of like this intrabrain exchange-
"I am the Greatest evah!" <- self importance generator in the insula
"No, mate, that's obviously and evidently so silly it can't be true."<- false tag correction in prefrontal cortex

You can see the scan here. vmPFC highlighted in human self-esteem studies

Lesion the yellow spot, and we get antivax Napoleon.

Hence you'll inevitably find antivaxxers believing they are better able to naturally resist disease, are smarter than the sheep around them, have the qualities of a lion, and are members of the Chosen. I.e. they are Napoleon because their internal assessment is broken, which is also why they swallow obvious nonsense, and things like horsepaste, Hydroxychloroquine, and their own urine.

In a sense, the preventable Covid deaths are a zombie apocalypse from a lack of brains. Unfortunately, the experience of being infected isn't likely to help. Brains reportedly shrink even from mild infection.

Examining differences in cognitive function, the researchers found that the participants with SARS-CoV-2 showed deficits in executive function, which encompasses higher-level cognitive functions such as thinking, reasoning, and decision-making.
This may be a permanent change. We don't have long term data yet. Also - did they catch the virus and get sick enough because of the pre-existing problem? Or did the virus cause the measurable defect?

My own stupidity is quite robust, and needs no help from Mr. Virus. Test me before and after to see if it changes? Or how do we know it's different?

Global decreases in cognition may be driving human behaviour towards more wars, totalitarianism, and drug abuse, and increases in human gullibility makes the information threat more salient as well. Brace for the Napoleons, they have made us suffer since forever.

Worth pointing out that you've been diagnosing people with vmPFC lesions, based purely on their forum posts, since at least 2017. Obviously something you care about, but also slightly weird and medically questionable at best.

Covid-19 Vaccine Effectiveness against the Omicron (B.1.1.529) Variant

NEJM study looks at effect of boosters plus 2 vaccine doses vs this Omicron variant. Symptomatic disease protection wanes.

With AZ only, 2 doses, no booster:
No effect against the omicron variant was noted from 20 weeks after two ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 doses
Omicron variants are sufficiently different to require a booster for efficacy.

CONCLUSIONS

Primary immunization with two doses of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 or BNT162b2 vaccine provided limited protection against symptomatic disease caused by the omicron variant. A BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 booster after either the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 or BNT162b2 primary course substantially increased protection, but that protection waned over time.

We don't need a study to discover this ourselves, as the mass infection rates penetrating fully vaxxed and boosted people worldwide are clear to see. Subvariants from BA2 lineage appear to go through boosted people's protection vs symptomatic illness with no impediment after 20 weeks. Omicron is recorded as reinfecting humans in as little as 3 weeks after first infection, as evidently natural immunity also wanes rapidly.

Vaccines continue to work on stopping severe illness and death. Those rates have declined to the lowest in 2 years. We've reached a sort of détente with the mutants.

Walter Reed hospital has entered phase 1 human trials on 29 volunteers with their ferritin based universal coronavirus vaccine. Until we get a universal version effective vs all variants, we will keep losing this arms race & continue to get sick. Estimated time to a working universal vaccine is 5 years, but there are multiple pipelines now open.

So almost a year after the last update, and getting on for 3 since the thread was opened, I wonder how people feel about the idea of mandatory Covid vaccinations these days.

Should be as mandatory as any other safe and effective vaccine regimen for a common communicable pathogen. Wouldn't physically force anyone to take anything, but barring those most likely to be contagious from situations in which they'll be a threat to public health is a far lesser compromise of their personal liberties than they would otherwise impose upon others through an unnecessary increased risk of exposure.

Pretty good. The chips mean I can access all my accounts and go anywhere without carrying anything and I no longer have to buy rubbers now that I'm sterile. I also think I'm developing superpowers.

I'm thinking to get another booster
I'm certainly glad I have had two boosters since my initial two doses at this point, especially now we have the bivalent ones. Latest Long Covid studies indicate that at least three doses of the vaccine begins to significantly reduce your risk of it. Which is really handy given what we now know about how Long Covid is a chronic inflammation condition of the cardiovascular system, and how several of my medicines are only safe as long as I keep my risk of cardiovascular problems low.

Are there any others that are at all mandatory?

Health care workers, public school students and faculty, and military personnel all have mandatory vaccination requirements at the state and/or federal level in the US. Other organizations may have more specific requirements.

And I don’t think you should force people to get vaccinated.
Sure, it's only fair to give the choice of being vaccinated or being under house arrest. The latter option being the only one currently open to folks who can't get vaccinated, as long as circulating levels of the disease remain high.
Obviously though, vaccine mandates need to be paired with things like mask mandates or as we've seen, individual measures alone are insufficient for proper suppression.
