No Single Player offline Mode then?

To add to the reasons why for many people off-line is essential.
Many people, myself included, play Elite a bit like a rogue-like game. There is a reason these games are all single player. Dwarf-Fortress, ADOM, Nethack, etc. It is because we like to be in our world in a considered way. We like to pause and think about it. We like to know we will be coming back to it in whatever amount of time and continue.
I believe this is part of the reason Iron-Man mode was fought for so successfully in the forum and DDF - because there is a strong element of the same kind of enjoyment as rogue-likes for Elite players, and this will be why many bought it or backed it.
I know it was a large part of it for me, and was why off-line was an essential feature. Where the main game was, for me.

Sorry that i cant find it now but i saw Micheal answer this concern a day ago, i cannot remember the exact words but it was to the effect that if FD ever went down they would make sure that we would still be able to play it.

I'd be very interested to see that quote.

its proven to be approx 100 complainers making the thread so long due to posting up to 150+ times.

I don't want to get in a fight, but just mention that there are a lot of us who aren't explicitly complaning or asking for refunds, but are still very offended by this turn of events... I personally believe the complainers have all the right in the world, because they also represent those of us who are disappointed but just less angry (and thus don't have the same motivation to take our voice to the forums).

We was so close to accept each other opinion...and no again this hate.
Ok....consider this..... an User with 3 Accounts..plays with 2 Bots in a group..... you even don't will see it...I don't want a competetion like this...and if you say it is imposible...believe me it is....if you say expensiv hobby...how many has especially buy an Hotas for ED ?
And also don't fotget the Goldfarmer.....you only will see their result but never will catch them ....
I am sorry you found my post "hate" and confused as to how

Unfortunately when you tarnish your reputation one of the outcomes is that people start to doubt other things you said as well.

Even though the vast majority of the other things you said were true?
This has nothing to do with FD, it's more to do with your view on things and some ridiculous "once a liar always a liar" theory or something.

Why is FD rushing the release and reneging on promises after being so forthcoming in the past?! (dedicated offline/25 ships at release etc) Dont us, weve been loyal and understanding all the way..so do the same to us now..no marketing ploys no doubletalk...give it to us straight...and bring back ED news to the NEWSLETTER. Its not a sales promo section its supposed to be news about ED developement.

Beta forum is public btw. Also I think that post should come as separate thread. Why journalists shouldn't be able to do their jobs? Better now than later during Premiere or launch.

Journalists can do thier jobs, what no one wants though is biased propaganda, can you guarenteee that ? whilst some are upset over this issue of no offline, that does not detract from the fact that this is a fantastic game close to being released that most of us here have had nothing but praise for, as long as your journalists are bias/making propaganda/misquoting/ or anything else other than reporting in an unbiased honest way, but in the real world how many journalists do that ?

I dont want FD to fail after so much fantastic work especially due to a biased press, do you, if the press can be honest then fine, but can you or anyone else here guarentee that ?

Because 100% of people offended by this post here, and others dont, its only fair that I step up and say that I dont give a damn about offline mode.

Thank you

Sadly yes... that's just how it works with reputation. If you've reneged on one promise (no offline), then another (no DRM), then another (25 ships at launch), then another (DDA topics), things start to spiral downwards from there.

Most of the pieces major sites were reasonably balanced, I thought. It's the random smaller sites I've never heard of before but are apparently "massive" that have news items littered with plain incorrect info before they even get on to the right or wrong of Frontier's decision.

Have you read the Eurogamer piece?

No wonder Rab Florence stopped writing for them

What I don't get is how the majority of the "no offline mode complainers" thought it was a good idea to pay extra to back and alpha/beta test a game they cannot easily download or get to play?

I understand that, for some, their situation may have changed between backing and last weeks announcement but surely that would be a very small number and not indicative of the amount of complaints we are seeing here and now and I think some refund mechanic needs to be implemented so as peeps can not take advantage.

e.g. what stopping me asking for a refund due to no offline mode, getting it and then re-buying the game when released thus effectively getting the beta access for free?

Says the guy with at least 50 posts in the "for-online" camp. Plus, you'll be hating on FD on launch day when you can't connect to servers. As happens with all online-only game launches. Ever.

Yea agreed i have spent far too much of my time trying to convince people the sky didn't fall in with the offline play drop decision.

You really think i would be surprised to not be able to log in for the first week of release?!

Every online multi player game has issues with server load near release even AAA titles.

Even gw2 over 2 years after release has issues every update patch.

Will i hate on the game? Of course not!... I might complain to my wife for about 5mins ;)

Will i wait, play other games for a few hours/days in the mean time and when i manage to get online have tonnes of fun?..yes!

Just because you obviously have not taken into account the state of modern gaming please do not assume others haven't either.

As I have pretty reliable internet, the lack of an offline mode doesn't affect me too badly. I understand, and even agree with, some of the less popular reasons why such a move might be desirable to Frontier.

I'd like to be able to pause mid-fight, nip off for a quick intake (or outflow) of liquids, and get back on the horse. That might leave me a sitting duck, in a galaxy that never sleeps. That's understandable, and not such a big deal to me.

What is a big deal is the ham-fisted way that this was handled, from the Kickstarter campaign onwards.

Given the stress that David Braben admitted he was under during the Kickstarter campaign, during the mid-way dip in pledges after the initial influx, I can understand if there was a temptation from him to strongly imply that offline would be offered, in order to get those lovely pledges.

What I still don't get, however, is why it wasn't either

  • Costed as being a different game (albeit one that could share a lot of resources with the online game in terms of art assets, PG algorithms etc), and added as a Kickstarter stretch goal
  • Covered in disclaimers when first announced, to ensure everyone was aware that there might be some backtracking if circumstances required
  • Brought up by Frontier as a fundamental decision to be made in conjunction with the backers right at the beginning of the DDF
  • Dropped very early in the development process, so resources wouldn't be spread any thinner

The fact than none of these options were taken does makes Frontier look like a bunch of amateurs, perhaps unfairly.

It's all well and good talking about how exciting it is to get out from under the yoke of a publisher, but a decent publisher might have had the experience to deal with this farce a bit better... Fan is short for fanatic, and the negative side of that fanaticism is probably revealing itself to Frontier right now.

Sorry guys, you screwed up.
