Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

You are assuming that gravity generation also equates to gravity nullification, this doesn't really follow, because if you nullify real gravity then you should also nullify the artificial gravity. If you are using some sort of field to nullify real gravity then it would also nullify the artificial gravity the ship itself is generating because it could only act by nullifying the field in that specific location and not the actual gravity generation source, because if it acted to nullify the source then the entire planet would be rendered without gravity. So if this is proper artificial gravity then the nullification would affect both because they are, well, identical in nature.

So since the planet gravity can't be simply cancelled out by the gravity generated by the ship, it would need to be nullified in some other way, maybe you are implying some sort of force field that blocks gravity, but then it wouldn't just work inside the ship, fields are spherical in nature and the gravity in areas around the ship would also be blocked because it would need to extend outside the ship to provide complete coverage.

But of course this also means your ship isn't actually affected by the gravity of the planet since you are cancelling that gravity, and rather than sit there on the ground it should just up and zoom away because the planet is moving through space at many hundreds of meters per second and there's now no force anchoring it to the planet, well apart from inertia keeping them together for maybe a second or so, and since the planets orbit is curved (well not in SC because they don't do that right?) the ship should travel in a straight line (because that's how it works right) while the planet moves on a curve, and the two would soon part ways. Well there's a lot of variables there depending on where on the planet you landed, because rotation of the planet and orbit of the planet will change how the ship behaves once you block out that pesky real gravity, maybe that's why they tend to blow away in the wind a lot?

I expect complications like this are one reason why ED steered away from artificial gravity, I mean it's all very well just saying "artificial gravity" to explain away why stuff falls to the floor in stations with no or micro-gravity, but if you want to model the actual physics of artificial gravity it becomes....complicated.

But of course that's not a problem for SC because they aren't actually modelling physics, either real or imaginary, in discernible way right?
I don't think Chris Roberts with his Physics background thought that far. Maybe one day we'll see a bulldozer push shomething off an artificial gravity surface and see how it behaves when it leaves that grav field.
You're missing the full quote, its well crafted diss of the faithful
You're right, my bad. I'd administer some self punishment if I wasn't so in love with myself.

GRW was built with the old standard Tom Clancy co-op PvE campaign in mind, the PvP nonsense was tacked on later and totally ruined with GR Breakpoint's absolute travesty of a Division style PvP focus (which is why none of us old school Tom Clancy game franchise fans play Breakpoint)...But 'Game mechanics dumbed down for console compatibility'...now where have I heard that well oiled PC master race nonsense before?

Yeah, you're right...I read it all over this forum when ED was released for Xbox GPP...Speaking as a multi-platform gamer of many years (Xbox, PS4/PS5 as well as PC)...it's utter nonsense, stop it

Just because console players primarily (since both PS and Xbox now have full M/KB support) use a controller and aren't forced into using 'office equipment' to play their games, doesn't mean game mechanics are dumbed down simply to suit the input method. Game developers design most modern era action games with a controller in mind since 90% of their sales are console based in the first place. The days of PC being the premier gaming platform have long since gone.

I've also heard (wrongly) from PC only players that console players rely on auto-aim...I hate it personally, never used it (since you can disable it) and I've never known anyone reasonably proficient with a controller using it either...It might be fine for someone new to using a controller, but it takes precision and control away from you just when you need it most...a bit like having someone else grab your mouse hand and moving the crosshair for you, nothing worse.

I mean, hell...I paid a damned sight more for my Nacom v4 pro or Razer Wolverine V2 pro controllers for the PS4/PS5 or the Xbox Elite V2 pro controller I use on PC than I did for my Logitech X56 HOTAS...console gaming isn't quite as cheap and cheerful as it used to be. Believe me, controllers aren't the clumsy, awkward and inaccurate things most dyed in the wool M/KB PC players imagine them to be...especially not the pro versions, even compared to the bog standard supplied bits of wobbly plastic that come free with any console, they're chalk and cheese.

FDev did absolute wonders with the Xbox UI for ED when you consider the sheer amount of control inputs necessary to play...a true feat of game design...and no, the game wasn't dumbed down just because a few thousand Xbox players were now in the mix. They just re-designed and adapted the UI...which is about the only root difference between a console game and a PC game these days...besides requiring more graphics options on PC.

Besides that niggly point, I heartily agree with the rest of your assessments...but poor Ai in games isn't due to the developers 'dumbing down' just for consoles...crap Ai is just crap Ai :D
You get both. Dumbly down, bad console ports - just look at SW Jedi dude and Last of us PC. Or wossname, I always confuse with the other zombie game. Skyrim wasnt making everyone happy, got meself UI mod to improve it. Press these two buttons to play the game isnt always good gameplay.
And then you get Mass Effect 3, where reduction was rather refinement of the gameplay. Shouldnt take a piano to play a game, right?
The paysants liked it, the master race did, too. Then you got those nutters who demanded aim assist toggle off, because it threw off their aim on consoles. We joked and bantered and the paysanterie would of course never reach legendary level - that belonged to the apoplegic guy we coached through soloing Gold difficulty in MP - could only play with a stick in his mouth for keypresses.
But it is a good example how you dont need 400 abilities for a class of character and not 600 keys to play a good well-paced game.

I'm drawing a parallel between Battlefield 3 building on from Battlefield 2 and using some codes there already with how some people say Star Citizen development had to restart when they switched game engine and the various refactoring and redesigning ships ending up with the current SC being a totally different game from original pitch. In a way maybe Star Citizen is a franchize in itself with SC origical pitch, current SC and SQ42.
There is some merit to this idea. The franchise is the real "staggered development". The game is just as unfinished and ever evolving, just the milestone releases are etched put and more polished.

Re: gravity (because I like physics even if I’m not good at it).
Gravity is acceleration. The magic bit of artificial gravity is generating an acceleration vector for everything within an area without also moving that area (or alternatively, creating a box that accelerates its contents without also accelerating itself - something like that, anyway). Insert fluff about localised distortions of space/time here.

To give a tilted box a localised gravity that’s perpendicular to the floor you don’t have to nullify the existing gravity field. You just need to add an acceleration vector that adds to the existing one and results in the desired outcome (like flying with FA off).

Edit: this is a great time to refer to levitating frogs.

much immersion.

Makes you wonder if the changes to law in the EU regarding purchases really does have something to do with it.
I cannot believe that people would be led into believing the FUD about CIG potentially being in breach of new EU consumer protection laws.

Such anti-capitalist propaganda. How dare anyone think of the individual rights, when the company is all that is holy.

You clearly don't understand the yacht and mansion buying industries.

Lifelong bans for the lot of you!

For once something good from the reddit SC community

For those not in the know, reddit are making some changes that will effectively shut third party reddit apps down (huge charges for API access). Reddit users overall are not happy with this change, since the official app sucks and browsing reddit on mobile requires a third party app to actually be bearable.

Unfortunately, refunds hasn't taken the same stance, but they have been hit by reddit admins with some new rules.

All seems to tie towards reddit going for an IPO and trying to look more appealing to investors.

Looks like they've gone and done a Digg.
