Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Yea, whatever. I will use mods, just like I use a few in X4. They increase my enjoyment of the game significantly. And I could care less if anyone approves. Thank goodness for single-player! :D
Yup, I had more than a few in Witcher 3...auto apply oils, auto-complete lockpicking to avoid the mini-game element I hated, inventory management tweaks...a few others. Never had a problem with editing savegame files either should it come to it. In the case of single player offline games where I'm not effecting anyone else's participation or enjoyment, my game...my rules :)

Ehh I dont know about this one, gonna grab it with gamepass but last few AAA releases, plus latest Bethesda games... why anyone is excited for this is beyond me.

My suspicion is that it generates a big square map around the point where you landed, and the main reason that atmospheric flying isn't in is that the whole planet isn't there, It's just a square flat map same as Skyrim.

I may be wrong, but I'm deeply suspicious, based on the fact they are using the same old engine tarted up a bit.

I'm ok with this though as long as the game is fun. It's an RPG not a space simulation.
It doesn't work like that. The maps are generated from the point around the player, so if you don't have an oxygen limit you can get where you want without limitations. I already said it, if you see it, you can get there.

Probably because they aren't satisfied with what is currently on offer. I know I'm not.

Still no-one remembers famous last words "16x time the detail"? No-one remember Fallout 76 or whatever? Why this particular game gonna be this amazing release to fix it all for Bughesda?
Look I`m all for more great space games, I DO want SF to be the one but... chances are slim based on the track record and current AAA gaming releases.

My hope is that modders will fix it in the future but I cant be excited for anything from AAA company and especially Bethesda. I believe it when I see it ;)

There are two technical difficulties ground vehicles present:
  1. Collision detection - there's going to be a ton of things (rocks, trees, crevices, creatures, etc) for vehicles to get tangled up in.
  2. Render speed - it's easy to draw a complex scene at a walking pace (relatively speaking), but drawing that same scene at a driving or flying pace almost always results in unsightly pop-in unless the developer is incredibly clever. A game like MSFS can deal with this because it's designed to look good from the air, not the ground, except at airports. Starfield is obviously designed to look good from the ground, so I suspect it would be a pop-in nightmare if you were able to move at any substantial speed.
There's probably other issues, but these are the ones that immediately come to mind. That said, Space Engineers does a pretty good job with ground vehicles, but it was designed as a "vehicle sandbox", not a huge open-world highly detailed RPG like Starfield.

I can imagine someone modding the jetpack to provide unlimited travel through the air across the planet, that would solve collision detection and render speed, well as long as the speed of jet pack travel is limited to what is already set.

I never bought Fallout '76 as I wasn't that interested in a multiplayer Fallout, so it never affected me. The game is 41/2 years old and had lots of problems behind the scenes during production. Looking at updates they made it gets favourable reviews now. Bethesda's games are still popular years after release and I expect the same with Starfield.
Everyone deserves a chance to fix a mistake but it looks to me that you have already made your mind up to be disappointed. How many chances does Roberts get?

Nah my expectations for this game are so low that wont be a disappointment, especially with gamepass. But I got hit in a head by AAA so many times recently that Iv learned to hold the guard. :D

Discovering the fibs is just part of the fun of a Todd game.

I'm with you. I'm tempering my hype until I see some lets play videos.
It's strange though because the game hadn't even entered my radar until I saw the trailer a month ago. I think its the open world, shooting people and ship customization thing that hooked me. Gives me RDR2 vibe, with the ship as my horse. I don't care about much else the game advertised.

Talking about scary AI...I was sent this YouTube link via Onkel Neal from Subsim.com...I've been a subscriber for over 20 years, anyone who's a fan of subsims of any type will know the place...one stop shop for all things submarine.

Anyways, he's recently added a chatGPT based AI chatbot named Wendy to help around the place...this video is Neal chatting in real time with the AI chatbot about AI
